Just ordered mine. Will be arriving at school in 3/4 days.
Just the base, 12" 800, 256 Ram, upgraded to 40 gig HD.

Where should I get the 512 ram chip for this?

Any suggestions? Cheap but performance.
Anyone know if it will accept a 1 gig chip yet?

It should work with a 1 gig chip, but 640 in total ram is enough if you dont desperatly need extra speed in Photoshop, besides its expensive! Ill go for 512 extra. Dont know where to buy, I live in sweden :D

I always order our RAM from Crucial.com

Not the cheapest but a fair price for great memory. Crucial is a division of Micron

Apple indicated that the most RAM you can have is 640 in this cpu.

How about running Final Cut Pro 4, Livetype and Soundtrack?
Can my new iBook handle this?
My only mac right now is a g3 B/w 400,am I going to notice a substantial speed difference?

Thanks for all the adivce!

Since FCP4 uses Altivec heavily... actually you can only run it with a G4 or G5 chip so there you go. The only downside to the iBook is its resolution and low L2 Cache. It's still possible use these applications, but if may be a long wait for rendering.

Actually, there is a way around that. I am running FCP 4 on my 400 MHz G3 iMac DV. You just have to hack the FCP package.
However, rendering does take forever, but I just want to learn the software so I deal with it.

The G4 has alti-vec so should be considerably faster than the G3 for most FCP4 tasks. The iBook G4 800 will be considerably faster than a B/W 400.

My wife's problem with the iBook is simple. When she wants to use a mouse the port is on the left, so a great setup for those that are left handed. She is right handed, makes it awkard to use.

Excelent statement. Why are all the ports on the left hand side? They are on the right hand side for the 12 inch powerbook, so why not the iBook? Additionally, if you use an apple pro mouse, after winding the cord behind the screen you are left with about 3 inches of cord to spare, and the mouse becomes virtually impossible to use!

This is completely stupid!

apple has to keep the 12" inch powerbook in a superior position

some pros, like my wife, do just fine with an ibook for her clients

but now that our friend is letting us use his extra dual G4, we are in the speed:D

Just wrote a big message and it F&&^&E up on me..

Anyways, here goes again..
Ran FCP 4 Hack to run FCP 4 on G3. Opens and runs smoothly, but one problem.. Will not render or mixdown audio at all.
Get a general error 49... Anyone have any idea?
Renders video and transitions flawlessly.

So a great hack indeed.
But, looking for help on this general error 49..
By the way, I am running Panther 10.3 with Quicktime 6.4.

Anyways, ibook in a few days arriving.. Starting to wish I would have upgraded to 60 gig instead of 40. Oh well, Pocket drivs are always dropping.

I am so excited for my new little 12" baby!
I can't wait.
I wish I was rich though, I would have boughten a powerbook.
Oh well, I am a poor student. This little system will be great!.

Phil
Judging by the fact that the program runs and it renders video. This leads me to belive there must be a way to get the audio mixdown working.

he didn´t ask whether it´s supposed to work, he asked if anyone had an idea how it may work. in that light you´re nor really helping, are you phil? ;) :p

Exactly!
So, perhaps a hack exists to make it render audio
Or maybe I did it wrong.

THANKS MRM!
At least you get it...

What dont you get here Phil?

I am familair with the sys requirements and I know how to read the box...

Hey Phil, Does Soundtrack or Livetype run on a NeXt Cube?

iBook G4 vs iBook G3 vs PowerBook G4

I've had my 12" G4 800 iBook for a couple of days now, it is sweet. The keyboard is a lot better looking. The slot loading CD mechanism is superb. It seems to be a bit slicker. Otherwise outwardly unchanged from the original iBook. In fact still a great rugged portable to throw around as you like (unlike the 15" al powerbook, I had last week that I was scared to handle in case it broke).

However the innards are totally different from the old G3 iBook. G4 processor (7455 Apollo ver 3.3), faster bus speed (133Mhz), USB 2, built in bluetooth and airport extreme and a new 32Mb graphics card ( the dual head firmware hack still works).

I compared it to my G3 800 iBook, the G4 runs a lot faster when doing processor intensive work, however little obvious difference in normal use other than feeling a little smoother. The Xbench figures are very different though... 81.26 for the G4, 51.71 for the G3. (Xbench comparison)

Obviously a comparison with the other rival, the 12" combo powerbook has to be made... the powerBook has a 1Ghz processor c.f. 800 on the iBook, two empty memory slots c.f one, same L1 cache but bigger and faster L2 cache (512k@1GHz c.f. 256k@800MHz), same bus frequency, essentailly the same graphics card ( the Fx on PB is meant to be marginally faster, but the ATI on iB is meant to give a smoother display with better color reproduction), and the same hard drive size. However what does this translate to in real terms. Well I've checked out scores on xbench, they vary on the powerbook from around 85 to a maximum of 93.85 (c.f 81.26 for G4 iBook) for similar specced systems. Now here's the crunch, in my opinion, the iBook has a better case ( is more rugged, easier to carry around without a huge padded bag), is better lookiing, and for only a 3-10 score difference on Xbench is £450 UK ( $500 US) less money.

In summary, the 12" iBook G4 is a f***ing great update. I really can't see what market the 12" combo powerbook is aimed at any more? The iBook has it sewn up.

Trust me, there are plenty of mac users who need the Al look and PowerBook name just to feel complete... for that, there will always be the 12" PB (and the extra $500 they'll pay for the branding) I'd bet that if Apple discontinued the 12"PB, those users would migrate to the 15"PB instead of the 12"ibook, only to prove that portability isn't the main/only reason they wanted that particular notebook.

(Of course, now I've opened myself up to being targeted by those justifying spending more money for the 12"PB :D )

The only difference between the iBook and the 12" Pbook is the "branding."

Cache doesn't do much.. Ram expansion.. nah... I'll dismiss the other differences in a similar sarcastic tone as well... bah, powerbook? more like rip-off-book. :)

I think its $500 well invested.

RE iBook vs powerbook

I'll dismiss the other differences in a similar sarcastic tone...

Please note that I said combo powerbook NOT superdrive powerbook. I'm sure those that need a superdrive also need the performance boost from having 1.25Gb RAM and the 20% increase in performance from 512k L2 cache.

Those without the superdrive model are generally not the users who will be editing huge images in photoshop (screen too small), not editing video (no DVD drive), not music professionals (screen too small and no DVD drive), in fact they will not be the ones who would benefit from or even notice the performance boost. That was my point. I think the superdrive equipped 12" powerbook is a great machine (other than I personally don't like its looks), however the combo powerbook does not seem to fulfil any niche other than the one legion mentioned which is to make people "feel complete" .

I don't want this discussion to degenerate into a powerbook vs iBook debate, my original point was purely about the merits of the iBook and a queston mark over what market the combo powerbook was aimed at following the G4 iBook's release. If anybody disagrees, then that's fine. I personally don't have a problem with that.

On a more personal and slightly catty note - cr2sh, I really don't think you yanks have got the hang of sarcasm yet so please don't, it's difficult to understand what your point is when you try.
;)

The 12" with the top of the line spec would sell like crazy in Japan and for people that want ultracompacts. I think it would sell for more, frankly. I for one, hate the 14" iBook.

14" notebooks are the value segment. This iBook has to compete with crappy plastic Athlon notebooks that run circles around the iBook in absolute terms for way less money. Smaller is suppoed to cost more.

The iBook smokes the Sony 505 series in form factor.

Go to Dynamism.com to see what epople are prepared to pay for fast ultra slims.

Anyone can make a 17" portable brick. Prices for good ultra-slims have always been higher. They have higher prestige value. Executive notebooks is what I think they are often referred to.

I don't think the iBook is an ultracompacts its around 2kg which is too heavy. Sony has a 505 at 785grams with 1ghz Pentium-M and 4 hour battery life which i think is pretty cool
