If DVD creation were a signifigant reason for putting G4s in the iBook line then you would expect Apple to offer a Superdrive equipped iBook.

Plus, from what I have heard, DVD SP (unlike iDVD) works with Firewire DVD-R which I just happen to have.
I just think that it looks bad if the release new computers that cannot run their own software.
How long until we will see an application that requires a G5?

doesn´t that have people upgrading and boosting sales. at the moment updating macs is moving at a fairly leisurely pace. maybe apple wants mac users to get into the update race and update their computers at the rate of pc users?!

Yes I know. What is your point?

Was I somehow obligated to include a mention of Final Cut Pro in my response which was obviously about DVD Studio Pro?

Your point would have been valid if DVD Studio Pro was the only thing at question, but it's not!

Oboy

Personal opinion.

*murk murk* Oh Apple, why could you not wait for Gobi? 1 ghz for 12" and 1.1 ghz for 14", it would have been ferfect. I would have liked the 1 meg L2 and the low powerdraw, damn the Altivec, I don´t need it, but large cache would have been so good. And only 800 mhz for the 12"?!? Please, if the heat is to high why not use a newer G4? 12" with a 933 G4 I could accept. I am dissapointed but I will still buy the new iBook, slotloading combo and the ATI card is nice, and of cource the price. But it is not the upgrade I was hoping for.

256 k cache, goodbye snappyness, I better get max ram from the beginning. When I get it I will give u a review, eventhough somebody will maby do it before me.

I hope it´s not to warm and that Panter will be faster than Jaguar.

Thank u all for posting on the forum, it´s interesting to read!

Who says it's not the old 7455/45 design on a new 0.13 micron SOI process? If it were, going to the 7457/47 wouldn't make it cooler...

My statement was as follows : "If DVD creation were a signifigant reason for putting G4s in the iBook line then you would expect Apple to offer a Superdrive equipped iBook."

How is my point not valid? It is a simple IF-THEN statement. FCP is irrelevant.

as chef would say, "stop squabbling, children". this is a fairly minor matter and really not worth the hassle.

My wife's problem with the iBook is simple. When she wants to use a mouse the port is on the left, so a great setup for those that are left handed. She is right handed, makes it awkard to use.

I hope you are right, but considering that Moto has left the PowerPC ship (wich is not a sinking one), is it likely so that they have done a final round o´55s with 0.13 micron for Apple? I gues we´ll find out soon enough, in the meantime I´ll stick with your oppinion.

I have been disproven, and therefore shamed!

"The ibook G4's ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics processor with 32MB of DDR SDRAM

Or the 12" Powebook's NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM"

I think the FX maybe faster by a fair bit, but as a rule, ATI chipsets have better rendering quality in my own experience only...

congrats

it makes sense that apple has finally ditched the cdrom drive and perhaps this is why the ibook starts at 1099 instead of 999, but then the G4 processor more than makes up for that if the cd-rw/dvd is something you don't use

in my case, owning photoshop and illustrator, but not using my optical drive for anything would make me find the G4 the key issue in getting the 1099 dollar model and being content with it...some people who do not use altivec apps will not find much of a boost in the new ibook and it may disappoint them

if money is no issue, the powerbook 12 inch model seems best...but i hope apple fixes the latch problems they have had with the alubook series

Greetings everyone -

Just upgraded from G3/500 MHz/384 MB RAM/10 gig HD iBook to a G4 iBook 12" 800 MHz with 640 MB/60 gig hd/airport/bluetooth/combo drive.

Impressions - the outside of the iBook case looks almost identical if not identical. The keyboard of the new G4 iBook is gray (verses white) and the keyboard and trackpad seem a little slicker to me. Keyboard seems less plasticy from the previous one.

Speed seems pretty zippy. I use a G4/733 at work and as my tower at home and it feels equivalant but I haven't done any extensive tests to prove it.

So glad to have the slot loading combo drive - the old one had the cheap cd tray.

If you have any questions let me know. My first impressions are positive concerning the new ibook.

Well, I'm getting an 800MHz iBook G4 in January.

Only problem is, Pixlet needs A 1Ghz machine, unless strech my budget a 1GHz iBook :)

Where have you seen Pixlet obtainable? AFAIK, it's still vapourware....

I have a couple of questions:

Does it get hot when under heavy load?
Does the fan sound much?
Any good for 3D games?
How long does the battery hold? I saw that Apple has stadet that it holds up to 6 h on the 12", bigger battery yes but a warmer cpu.
Screen any different from last time?

Thank you and good luck with your iBook!

Some answers.

It didn't appear to get any warmer then the previous iBook.

No fan sound - when it wakes from sleep I am hearing either the CD or the HD make a noise but it goes away right away. Sort of a spinning noise.

Haven't played any games.

Battery lasted about 4 hours for me. Also, after being fully charged and taking the power adapter off, the time remaining indicated 4 (hours):32 (minutes) of battery left.

The screen is brighter then my previous iBook. Not sure if my other iBook became dimmer in the 2 years and 3 months I have owned it or not. It is equally as sharp.

Just ordered mine. Will be arriving at school in 3/4 days.
Just the base, 12" 800, 256 Ram, upgraded to 40 gig HD.

Where should I get the 512 ram chip for this?

Any suggestions? Cheap but performance.
Anyone know if it will accept a 1 gig chip yet?
