Re: Doesn't exist

There is no GeForce 4. There is, however, a GeForce 3 Titanium which competes with ATI's Radeon 8500 (unsuccesfully in my opinion). The GF3 Ti doesn't currently support Macs.

Have a look at this.

It has not been released yet, but nVida released the Geoforce 3 on the mac first so this could be debut of the Geforce 4!!

G4, speed bump soon, G5 MWNY?

I agree that a G5 won't come out till MWNY, I think we will see speed bumps at MWT. Also on another subject the TI book needs a speed bump bad! I think We may see that at MWT there will be iPod 2 for windows in the fall,(They will crush the competion with iPod 2)

new iMac don't ship until last week of Jan

It seems entirely possible that the G5 is a big revision to casing and styling and so on. Maybe titanium casing and so forth and almost certainly a few (probably two at least) months away.

From what I've been gathering informationwise, the upgraded chips, squeezing the most out of the G4's, will be a relatively low-key affair and be very close to the actual shipping date of the iMac, which has been given a good head of steam to attract a load of pre-orders and press attention. So my 2p (english sorry) is speed bumped towers announced last week Jan, 1.4, 1.6 and maybe a higher one, but unlikely, the next gen GeForce card (3) and combo drives across the board, 256MB RAM as the base standard. At about the same, or even slightly less, price point as the existing three models.

Power users, like me, will hang on for a bit, but longer than that and the switchers may re-appear (as they did before the G4 was announced first time around).

If I had a big web site and needed a few more hits. I might start a rumor that the upgrades we're coming too. This guy has no idea when anything is going to happen.

My thoughts exactly.

With Apple releasing a high-end iMac in January, midrange in February, and entry-level in March, it makes sense that a new G4 or G5 would appear after that. A new tower would do best, if released at a time when it can stand as a contrast to an available low-end iMac. Also, Adobe may have Photoshop ready by then.

I'd like to see a G5 in March and would order one immediately. However, if a speed-bumped G4 comes out first, I will simply wait. I'm using a G3 tower (b&w) now and have a new iMac on order. That should hold me until July, depending on how well my G3 handles OS X, which I will be installing once GoLive 6 arrives.

thats a pretty conservative article by macosrumors actually. they are leaning towards the g4 apollo chip over the g5 and are suggesting a wait of at least 6 weeks. the things that seem a little extreme are airport3, gigawire, ddr, 100gb hard drives.

Something is definatley happening! Here is the UK the build time for a 800DP is 15 days! This update will be the G4 though, no airport though because its not compatible with existing equipment.

G4 soon... G5 summer/fall?

there is NO G5 till summer at the earliest... it is just not ready. dont get psyched up for a letdown. there is the new G4 Appollo chip that is yet to be in a Mac.... that is the one that is above 1ghz.
even if we see a G5 in july, it probably will not be ready to ship for at least a few weeks after (unless motarolla does something amazing). in theory the G4 minitower HAS to be upgraded in the next month because in the next 2 weeks the imac will be faster than some of the G4 Pro Machines. the rumors behind the G5 also include a sexy new case that has been tweaked for some time at apple. as for that part, who knows. the current case is pretty awesome (though extra pci slots would be nice for some users). anyway, no G4 till MWNYC at the soonest... for real..... not to ruin the fun, but it really wont happen. be psyched when we get a 1.2 or better G4 Apollo.

Dear god what is that blinding light?!?

Oh yeah, common sense. I think we may see a new case with Apollo chips. Remember that the blue and white G3 was a case shakedown for the G4. We may also see more streamlined LCDs. NO G5's UNTIL IBM IS DONE TESTING THEM. Eesh.

i disagree

Although I normally agree with 110% of what you say mc...

The case isn't that old and the G5's may well be ready by NY but no sooner, (i agree with that)

Why bother with a new case for what will be end of the line for the power towers, G4 chips? - when the blaze of glory will be G5's, and Steve will give the "fastest chip on earth" speech showing it eating P4s, P5s or whatever for breakfast.

It is highly possible that the G4 towers were due to be speed-bumped at SF but supply from Motorolin'nowherefast, just wasn't up to it.

A new case, demands a show case and an unveiling at a major show. A speed bump doesn't. And there is at the moment a real hole in the Apple product price line, nothing between 1799usd and 2499usd, if we discount the overlapped and now redundant bottom of the range TowerG4.

I'm trying to deduce from the sources and get inside Apple's often fuzzy brain

well said kid. seems like most of the members are pmsing today. nice to see someone around here is still thinking logically and speaking (typing) intelligently.

i'll admit it i was a die-hard "g5s soon" advocate. but ive been slowly won over by the "g4 speed bumps soon" camp. but im still holding some hope in the back of my mind that says "they [the majority] were wrong about g4s in the imac2."

thanks for keepin' it real grouse

Cases

Actually the structure of the case hasn't changed since the Blue and white, just the aesthetics. I don't count the new hatches on the quicksilver as a new case. A whole new case would present an adequate PR buzz to preceed rev-ing to a new chip and new colour scheme. The blue and whites were the perfect example: a new case to preceed a new chip. The preliminary case allows for testing aesthetic variables.

some good points here. i think the next case design for the powermacs will be something really new. a lot of people are predicting narrower towers, but im guessing and hoping it will be something more revolutionary than that.

as far as a new case premiering before the g5... you have some points there regarding the blue and white g3s but i just dont see that happening again. heres my reasoning: we need a speed bumped g4 right away, which means it will premiere at a special event or tokyo. i cant see apple unveiling a revolutionary chip in a revolutionary case at some special event. maybe it will happen in tokyo (perhaps this is why tokyo was pushed back?) but more likely ny. apple will want to garner some media hype if it has a new case and/or a new chip and therefore will not do it so close to the release of the imac (perhaps why we didnt see powermacs in sf). so a new case anytime before tokyo is very unlikely as still slightly unlikely at tokyo (unless we see a g5).

some rumr sites have even been suggesting that we will get a g5 in the current quicksilver tower, and a new enclosure wont happen until the first revision. although i dont think this is likely it is another interesting possibility to consider.

tomayto/tomahto

To clarify: Yes, New G4's first THEN a new case THEN a G5 release. If the G5 is most likely a year off than this is a realistic pattern.

I'd wait for a G5 if speed-bumped G4s are coming in the towers, but what I really want is a 1Ghz+ TiPB.

I'd buy that right away, and then get a tower in a year.

Anyone think 1Ghz+ TiPB's are likely next week?

cheers,
jaxon

I need to buy a new computer in the next month or so! Cant really wait until march. What should I get? I do a bit of everything from graphics manipulation to web design.

flaming TiBooks

" Today in Cupertino a class action lawsuit was filed against Apple Computer Inc. Apparently it's high speed G4 laptops were setting people on fire when used in environments warmer than 68 degrees farenheit."

So when we'll see G5??

So... according to the different sources that we all heard about in the last month... When could we easily think about his release... because, if the G4 will really come up within 5 days, I'm sure Apple might want to wait perhaps till May or even July before releasing their new processor...

I read in the forum that G5 might come up perhaps in March... around that... but where's the logic? They won't annonce a new line of G4 when they're already preparing themselves for the G5 release within 2 month.
So my thought is : if Apple annonces some new configurations on Jabuary, 20 for the tower... I'm expecting the G5 not until July...

If there's no annoncement on that day, as far as we know, this could be possible to see the thing we are all waiting for in the next 2 or 3 month....

I think my thoughts are pretty realist. Just give your opinion about them!

Update to pro line at Seybold

There's a little article at MOSR that states that MacWarehouse has a RAM deal on its Tibooks (and other computers) that runs til Feb. 17 which also happens to be the first day of Seybold.

The reasons for not introducing a new G4 tower at the MWSF may be numerous but a big one I think is b/c they wanted to focus on consumer products and not steal any thunder from the new iMac.

So Seybold being the conference for publishing professionals I think is a good time to introduce a new Tower and possibly update the TiBook. Also, as others have mentioned, the Crystal Clear savings deal runs through Jan. 31 so I doubt you'll see a new revision before then. Feb. 17 seems right for various reasons. Maybe we'll even see a revision to the LCD lineup as well.

I'm hoping for a iPod revision at the MW Tokyo, which has been a good venue for announcements regarding portable computing. Since the iBook and the iMac have been recently updated, the iPod is about the only thing new that I see coming out then.

personal predictions

My personal prediction for the new promacs... are dual g4 machines at Seybold. Not based on any "inside" info...

just based on what is realistic....

no G5s for a while

I think we'd be lucky to see real G5s by MWNY, I honestly think they won't be ready until the next MWSF. The G5 is a very different CPU then the G4 or G3. Its 64bits, which forces Apple to redo a lot of coponents. They'll need a new Motherboard, new memory system, and they'll need to make some changes to OSX. Could the G5 be ready by MWNY? Sure. Has Apple been able to deliver on their Pro-line desktops in the past 2 years? No. I would expect Apollo-based G4s either at Seybold or MWTokyo with no new enclosure and maybe DDR memory.
