Go check out the "what to think about this G5 thing" thread

I think the end of 2002 is realistic for G5, but I thing Apollo G4's may allow enough of a shift in spec to allow some changes in the case and motherboard to move toward G5. Apollo may serve as an interim "simulated" G5. Of course there would have to be some creative board design involved to get all the pieces to sync. We may get our 4th memory slot back, DDR, all duals and a faster HD spec (EIDE 100 or, dare I say it:fibre-SCSI). We may even see a new case- both the Apollo and the G5 run at much lower power levels so the heat handling space in the case could be significantly reduced.

he G5 is a very different CPU then the G4 or G3. Its 64bits, which forces Apple to redo a lot of coponents. They'll need a new Motherboard, new memory system, and they'll need to make some changes to OSX.

mmm, the Apollo has a new mobo, new bus, uses DDR, possibly new PCi adn AGP. So how exactly does a new mobo make the G5 farther off? If we can expect the Apollo, I think it's just as reasonable to expect a G5.

I think its a rough date. However, I am a bit sceptical because I think they will wait unitl some sort of event to release the new towers. However, if they are loosing too much money because of the new imac then just maybe we see them in about a week.

First of all, it's sKeptical, and losing. Additionally, they are not losing too much money because of the new iMac. That's an absurd remark.

What I meant was that with a similar specification of the imac + powermac towers the sales of the towers must be greatly reduced because potential customers are swayed towards the imac + not the tower (towers have the higher profit margin). Afterall, the imacs are cheaper.

Dumb German magazin

Hy there, everyone was talkin about the the G4s and maybe G5s coming up in SFMW. What we got war a pretty good i-Mac. But a Germanmagazin reprotet in it´s February issue about newly announced G4s with up to 1,6 GHz in SF. Pretty dumb. But I hope we see the realisation of those Powermacs soon.

from what I've heard at my design firm, apple will introduce speed bumps on the g4 until july, around the time it will introduce a g5 near 2.2 ghz with 400mhz system bus, usb2, firewire 2, and of course DDR ram. What is all this about a GeForce4? Sounds good to me

i want to know how many people think consumer are going to keep caring about MHz/Ghz and not about software/ease of use. I mean damn...if the g5 comes out in july at 2.2GHZ, the p4s will be around 3 already. I dont see the Itanium ever being a feasible consumer alternative, because whatever power it gives you, Windows takes away.

Will people really care about 2.2GHz vs 3GHz ??? Its really getting ridiculous. I truly hope a 2.2GHz g5 with OS X and iMovie and iTunes and iPhoto and iTools and and and and and EXACTLY. Here's to the renaissance of technology.

Agreed sparkleytone.
Also the ease of use/stability issue with PC processors could very well get worse once cpus go 64bit. There are many compatibility issues which PCs have and Macs dont. So as the future of machines go apple is looking good.

good job calling that one.

i was a beta tester coming from win2k to xp. i hated it then i liked it alot. i had been using the full pro version since late august because i still use PC for games. well...

we had a LAN party this weekend, and everyone running XP kept getting a networking ERROR 65 cant ping anything. riiiiiight. my ibook my XP machine and my roomies win98 machine worked fine.

i like my friends, because the LAN party turned into a FORMAT C: party. word. now we all have win2k again and guess what? its SO much faster and the networking issues are gone. they took a semi-passable OS, made it MORE stable, EASIER to look at, then added CLUNKY code, and ****TY networking.

thanks Bill.

I think a lot of people here agree that the reason we use macs is not because they are faster, but because they are better at doing what we want to do with them. The iMac looks nice and the specs are good, but where Apple should really be focusing its marketing is on how easy it is to REALLY do what you want on it using imovie, iphoto, idvd, itunes, and osX.

hello

re:fast

since internet, email, and word processing are what i mostly do outside of fixing computers (pcs), my awful typing skills make it so that pcs and macs are plenty fast for me

...notice i don't use caps

i still type ONLY 20 wpm on average since middle school, high school, junior college, college, grad school, and 23 years in the working world, and 760+ posts as two different users on macrumors!

i like the ease of use of the mac over the pc, but i have to admit, i can't stand that the mac has not hit 1 ghz yet, as of 1-22-02, even though as a techie, i know better due to bus issues and level two cache meaning just as much

it is just for the unkonwing consumers that it's important that we, as macheads, finally join the "1 ghz club" as it is...celeron has been there for over two months or so

so far, at 3:27 pm pst, there is no powermac update to 1 ghz...maybe that will come a little later?

i did read here, somewhere, though that it will be here in a week and if that is true, tnen that is good for me

Liar. :D

And there won't be any new G4s today. Sorry to burst yer bubble.

are u sure?

7 hours and 28 minutes left in the 22nd of january of 2002, pst

but you are right most likely about the update in speed on the g4 and we will have to wait, again

Sadly - Agreed !

Well it is Jan 22nd.
Almost 8:00PM
Even 5pm Cupertino Time.
No G4 speed bump.
No G5.
No iMac_2002 confirmed shipped.

Nuttin' Honey.
'nuff said....

:p

my totallu dumb theory on the release date of new powermacs.

2nd of february would be good!!

Okay, this is just something I thought I'd put in before some BS starts about that date too (it's as insignificant as January 22nd to me)...

I reckon seeing as fast RAM is 2-2-2 rated and yet fast, is not fast when it's a mac 'cos it's lame PC133 RAM not DDR like the PeeCee world have, wouldn't it be wierd if they released new powermacs with DDR ram on that date ?

okay, I'll stop talking total garbage now. at least I'm not making stuff up about 1Ghz TiBooks and stuff, just a little harmless BS I suddenly thought of before I shut my mac down for the night :p
