GarageBand doesn't import MP3 files. Most people don't know how to get around that, which means that people can't use "their illegal music".

Also, it doesn't import iTunes protected AAC files, which means that if it's from the iTMS you have to pay still.

So... the average consumer can't make ringtones out of others' songs.

Actually, Garage Band does import MP3 files. All you need to do is drag the file from the Finder (or from iTunes) into a Garage Band project window.

For protected AAC that you own:

iTunes -> burn AAC to CDRW (yes RW so you can re-use it!), drag file to your hd, drag file from hd to GarageBand

While I'm not sure about protected AAC files, you are incorrect about MP3 files. You can import MP3 files into Garageband. Wav and aiff files can usually be imported as well (yes, there are occasions where they may not work correctly and have to be "exported" with the proper settings by another sound program first).

This wasn't impossible to accomplish prior to this update, but there were a myriad of steps involved, including importing the song to GarageTune, clipping the section you wanted, exporting to iTunes, converting to AAC, opening it in the finder, renaming it to m4r and then finally importing it again to iTunes.
I've successfully accomplished this to create a custom ringtone following these steps.

This update, however, adds big thumbs up to make this easier. I have yet to try it, but I'm sure it will work fine.
Cool! :)

Actually, before this update, and even with it, you could simply open the file in Quicktime Player (if you have the paid version), clip it to 40 seconds or shorter, export it, and either change the file extension, and use iToner to synch it with the iPhone--or use Make iPhone Ringtone to put it in iTunes and then synch it with the iPhone.

This is nice and all, but why can't I do that in iTunes?

Because likely the only way apple was able to get this in was by insisting that it's only for original music. Of course you can use the same method to use anything ripped from CD, but there's really no way for apple to prevent that while allowing original stuff.

And a whitelist/blacklist in iTunes wouldn't do much good since so much music is just ripped from CD or sources other than buying from the iTunes store.

For protected AAC that you own:

iTunes -> burn AAC to CDRW (yes RW so you can re-use it!), drag file to your hd, drag file from hd to GarageBand

I think it's even easier than that. You can use protected AAC files as the soundtrack for iMovies. So just drag it into iMovie, add any dummy video file, then export as an audio only file.

No burning needed.

Ok, so correct me if I am wrong: You can import either an AIFF or WAV file and convert it to a ringtone?

Now people are reporting you can import an unprotected mp3 file and make a ringtone out of that as well? So the only thing that DOESN'T work is a protected MP3?

If this is true then yeah, no need to pay for ANY ringtone. Just burn an audio CD and use the AIFF.

Sweet!

Well, I was holding off on the iLife update... it's not that I absolutely can't afford it - not that I drink Starbucks anyway :p - but it's that I couldn't justify the $70 for what seems to be a marginal update at best, for me. I don't have a video camera so I wouldn't use the new iMovie and I don't see a $70 change in iPhoto. At least for a most casual photographer. And I definitely won't use iWeb, not much appeal in cookie-cutter website creation for me.

So it's not that I don't like iLife, it's that I didn't really need the upgrade and could have spent that money better. Like on Leopard...

Ah well, guess I'll have to give it a second thought at some point.

I agree. I have pretty much no reason to get iLife '08 (never use iDVD, iMovie '06 is more than good enough for me, I web design as a hobby so iWeb is useless to me, I don't use Garageband at all, and iPhoto I use because it came with my Macbook) but I would like this easy ringtone iPhone integration. It doesn't even seem like much work to add the export feature.

Oh well, Apple's a business I suppose.

Omg Do You Know What This Means?`

this means that I can put the theme song from Buffy the vampile slayer on my iphone! Sweetness ( you can even buy it from itunes)

:)

So...

iLife doesn't have features you want = You didn't buy it
iLife adds a feature you want = You still don't want to buy it

So not adding features you want AND adding features you want has no affect on you either way. What motivation does Apple have to do anything for you, then?

What about for those of us that aren't on the very latest iLife? Not getting any ringtone support...?
:(
Getting lost in all of this... is that fact that simply RENAMING your .m4a file to .m4r and double-clicking on it, now adds it to your ringtones again as of firmware 1.1.2 and iTunes 7.5. Make sure its under 40 seconds, and you're probably golden. GarageBand's announcement simply cements support for the method, and dispells all doubt that this will be a'changing anytime soon.

I just don't get Apple nowadays.

Either this was poorly planned releasing this feature after tons of bad will was built-up in the base and the youger folks.

Or, this was their plan all along, and Apple care more about the media companies than us.

or 3) Apple has to walk a tightrope between its users' needs and the Media conglomerates' ability to pull an NBC. They can't always just plunge ahead with features, consequences be damned. Navigating that little annoyance called 'lawyers' doesn't always please the 'gimme NOW!' crowd.

Where the Heck?

OK, so I can create ringtones without any problem and GarageBand *appears* to export them to iTunes... but I can't find the darn things anywhere in iTunes. Not by sorting as ringtones or date added; nothing. Not even doing a Finder search for new files locates anything. Any ideas from the smart folks at MR?

Do you have a ringtones section in your source list? Right after "Audiobooks" and "Radio"? If not, upgrade your iTunes... you're overdue. It'll be in there if everything is iRight with our iWorld.

Can anyone post a brief tutorial with step by step of how to do this in GarageBand (for those of us that havent opened GarageBand EVER before today)???

Im really quite excited, but I cant seem to figure the program out. :-\

Yup, iTunes 7.5, Ringtones in the source list, etc... but no sign of the GarageBand created 'tones. Weird.

They *do* show up when I do the .m4a -> .m4r trick in the Finder with files I've created via QuickTime Pro or Amadeus II (or Pro). 'Tis a puzzlement.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Tried it and it does export to iTunes BUT won't sync with the iPhone and says "wasnt synced....cant be played on iPhone".

I take it this only works with 1.1.2?

A thousand times yes. I remember the first time I considered taking the red or blue pill. I figured I didn't want to live a life fearful of every firmware update. As soon as the UK version of 1.1.2 hit, this functionality was exposed. Garageband is just letting us know Apple won't be taking the feature away again.

So?

So what keeps you from dumping a song into garageband, selecting the part you want, and creating a ringtone of the song?

Why the hell would we pay an extra dollar if apple just gave us a free solution?

Totally glad I upgraded to 1.1.2 around three weeks ago.
Better battery life, more stable, and on top of all that, official custom ringtone support!:D
