But why intel again?

The only thing that stops apple using AMD/nVidia is Intel motherboards right?

Apple has close relations with Intel (early access to new parts etc) and Intel is the giant of x86 CPUs (they have +80% market share). Intel CPUs are easily the fastest but Intel has never been good at GPUs. No reason for Apple to break the good relations with Intel and go with AMD which is currently the underdog in the CPU game.

The 13" base model will have the next gen integrated graphics. So probably a around a 20-30% performance increase over the sandy bridge graphics, and also DX11 and proper OpenCL support.

I think if they remove the optical drive (which I do) in the next refresh there is a good chance you could get discrete graphics in the 13" model. Its likely to be the next gen AMD mobile graphics, probably Thames, but maybe a low-end Chelsea.

The 15" high-end and 17" will have Chelsea.

that doesn't "stop" them, the 15 and 17 have AMD graphics in them... they just can't replace the INTEGRATED gpu with something different because Intel no longer allows other companies to use their core i series processors and put their own graphics in as an integrated solution.

I think the next update will feature a redesign. Apple are clearly angling to move to a more MBA-type setup. Get ready for higher resolution screens (probably only a bump to 1440x900 like the MBA, but you never know, with ultra high res panels coming for tablets we might see 2560x1600 panels all round), blade SSDs (probably 32 GB for caching frequent files), faster CPUs/GPUs (if Ivy Bridge is out) and thinner, lighter case. I get the feeling they want to ditch the DVD drive too, but it's still probably too soon unless it becomes a £50 add-on like for the MBA.

well if they aren't getting rid of the optical drive don't expect it to get slimmer... the odd and hdd are the thickest parts of the computer and there are NOT thinner options.

Personally I can't understand people who are all the time complaining about their gpus. Remember that notebook were mainly designed for work. Not any other reason. only work. And especially apple is dedicated to this word for years now!

Even assuming that it was physically possible to fit in a 13" inch Macbook one of the newest nvidia gpu I don't actually see a reason for this.

Apple is not making gaming machines. How hard is to understand this? Why you are interested so much about gpus? If you want a machine to play games buy an Xbox or a Ps . And don't tell me that you are designers etc and need the boost of a good gpu as even the 13" inch machine can handle most of the photoshop or 3d modelling requirements. Anyway, in fact, most gaming companies are turning their attention to consoles than computers.

In my opinion, apple is carefully choosing a well balanced hardware for it's machines. If you look carefully to the specs you will understand that there is a balance between cpu gpu ram etc.

And again, apple's machines are machines for work, not for playing.

Last I checked, we were living in a free society run by the great laws of supply and demand

Turns out, there are a great deal of people who game on their notebooks, you know, when they're not working 24/7...and it's a significant enough minority that Apple ought to at least offer an option for a decent GPU. While it may not be possible with the current TDP levels, it is certainly a valuable thought experiment to expect that they will do so for the next iteration(s).

And gaming on PC/laptops is hardly "dead" or relegated to merely console gaming - people have been making that claim since ~1998, and companies like Blizzard would love to disagree with that (their revenue sheets tend to help their argument too :D)

Finally, it terms of pure competition, Apple needs a solid response to the highest-end PC's such as the Sony Vaio Z (13.1" 1080p FHD, i7, discrete gfx, carbon fiber). As it stands, the MBP 13 is the ugly duckling of the :apple: family

Exactly my friend. Because we live in a free society, nobody forces anyone to buy it's products. In our case Apple is developing an x product. Nobody forces you to buy it's product if you think you can get a better deal .

Actually we don't have any statistics to know if the number of people that gaming is significant. However, i believe that it's not by lack that Apple is following this policy.

I agree that some kind of games still dominate on Pc and didn't find there way to consoles (mostly mmos or strategy games). However all other games are moving to consoles. You can make your comparisons by looking the number of titles per kind in gamespot . You would see that consoles introducing much many games rather pcs

All these years did you really see Apple to care about it's competitors do? Apple has been always a company based on marketing. I don't think many companies could yet sell computers of past technology in the double price . (mac minis, macbook) . Apple could sell you oranges as apples :D Of course the main reason it's selling that much units it's the close mac osx but this is another story.

Nice rational to convince yourself that Apple is ok to put weak GPU's in an expensive laptop like that? But there is 1 big flaw. A 1280 x 800 resolution screen for work?

I'm sorry, but 1280 x 800 is way too small for any serious work, so it's not designed for work.

Define "work". Not everyone's job involves heavy 1080p editing or 3D rendering. I get paid for writing, and to be honest, I wouldn't have any problems doing my work on 1280x800 screen, or even lower. Of course, I prefer a bigger screen but saying that 1280x800 is too small for any serious work is just wrong.

I mean, really??? Not even the 17" maxed out cost as much as the high end Sony Vaio Z.

Why would Apple need a solid response??? So they can sell 1,000+ computers worldwide??? I think the 13" is sitting in the sweet spot right now. Good enough for most users (myself included), with a price which is not prohibitive.

i'm waiting for a refresh.

13" w/ HD3000 too little for a 1300$ machine (i7)

\(._. )\ what if the next generation MBP also use intel GPU?? /( ._.)/

btw, what serial number is the new intel GPU speculated on the 13"?
what's the performance compared to the 6750?

Don't expect dramatically changes . As every new model Apple introduces expect some increase in performance 10-15 %

Wow that just made my day :D So you'r saying that you can pay like 999 dollars for the cheapest device and say "it's ok not to have something extra"? Dude, Apple must be SO HAPPY with you and your opinion :D

Ok, now a little bit more seriously. Nowadays, computers are more and more powerfull with time passing by. That's natural, right? The moore's law... Technogy gets better, chips are getting smaller with less heating issues and same or better power. Now why the hell would you apply that only to CPU? (by the way, heating problems of MBPs are caused by highly inefficient cooling system in MBPs, put there a fan, few "holes" like in normal laptops and you'll see no problem with heating - another flaw that mac users just settle with even when they pay huge pile of money)

If you don't play games on your mac that's great, but why would you say it's ok not to improve graphical performance of your MB? Now I don't play games on my laptops (2 PCs, 1 MB to come), I have 4 quad PC just for gaming (well I work on that PC, but mainly for gaming) and PS3 (not a big fan but hey, it's not that bad). Yet I would love to have MB with better graphic thanks to GPU acceleration while flash is playing, when 1080p video is playing, when programs are running (beside games programs like Google Earth, or similar) etc.

Now you can say that MB can handle all that even with C2D processor. Yes it can, but don't you want to have better battery life? Using GPU in these kind of situations is more efficient than CPU. While ability to run smoothly current games is secondary, usage of GPU in these kind of situations is great and Intel has been known for its poor performance in... Well, everything about graphic...

Well but writing doesn't really require any serious notebook anyway. A MBA should do as good as a MBP.
For coding and stuff 1280x800 works too but 1680x1050 works far better and more would still be appreciated. It is just very nice if you can fit a few columns of stuff right where you can see it and do not have to switch around endlessly.
The only reason they offer this low res is because they cannot get decent panels with higher res for the price they want. MBA is a lower quality panel and they don't even need as many and it is a more expensive notebook. It is simple product design reasoning and if they wanted to build a really good work notebook they would and could build something else or at least offer the option but they don't.

ROFL funniest thing I've heard all day. And I've heard many funny things today.

how does the 3000HD compare to the 320/330M?

Slightly worse than the 320M, much worse than the 330M (in benchmarks).

For gaming in Windows far worse than both the 320M and 330M (mainly due to Intel's pathetic drivers)

the 13" uses a core i5, not i7

It will have intel gpu again

The intel gpu will again suck

High end 13" Pro has a 2.7GHz i7-2620M.
