Hello everybody. I've been a long time Android (mainly Samsung) user and when looking for a phone to replace my S20 Plus I decided what the heck, see what all this Apple fuss is about :). I love electronics so it was intriguing to me to see how different iPhones are. I seriously considered the S22 Ultra and Pixel Pro 6 but figured I can always go back. So I picked up a 13 Pro Max in Sierra Blue a few weeks ago and am still learning the differences.

I'll wait a while longer before deciding which system I prefer but have already noticed some things I like, and some that I don't. Which is only natural. Below is a picture with my new Apple Black Cherry leather case I got for it today.

It’s been a while, since I moved to iPhone/iOS. The last non-iPhone (pun intended) was a HTC Touch with windows mobile 5.1. It could play videos up to 144p after export to .flv format. It was a mess. I remember on my 22nd birthday, Win Mobile was already so slow, I could not answer any call, with the ringtone continuously ringing and confused people around me, why I wouldn’t answer the calls. So I Switch to the iPhone and never left.
Same in the PC side. In contrast to Android, you will find dedicated places for certain things. Like Mail. There is just one default (not like Samsung Mail, Android Mail and Google Mail). There is no need to download Acrobat to open pdfs. You can record a song or podcast with GarageBand (free) or get in video editing with iMovie (what I did).
Apple is all about, having it thought till the end. My favorite example is always: Samsung has a phone (like the S20), that has 10h battery, 120Hz display and WQHD resolution. But you can only have once at a time. iPhone allows you to have all promises at once.

Congrats! Beautiful choice in the phone color and case. Let us know how you get along with iOS. Both platforms are great these days. Personal preferences are the true deciding factor for the most part.

First off, thanks everybody for the warm welcome. Much appreciated.

Rather than responding to individual questions I'll try to generalize my response and hopefully cover most of them.

I am refraining from passing judgement on the iPhone 13 Pro Max when comparing it to Android and my previous S20 Plus for the exact reasons mentioned. I realize they have different ways of doing things and that just because I don't understand how certain things operate right now doesn't necessarily mean it's bad or that I don't/won't like it. I just have to learn. Which is why I will wait several months before making a determination on which I prefer. I also try to watch useful tips videos on YouTube whenever I have the time.

Without question I'm loving the battery life. By far that is the most impressive thing about the iPhone 13 Pro Max to me and honestly is what swayed me to try the iPhone over the S22 Ultra. It is quite simply terrific. I'm also very impressed with how well face recognition works. The only negative I have so far is there is a noticeable stutter at times when scrolling. Especially when you scroll slower. Very surprising for a 120hz refresh rate. I did download the latest 15.4 update the other day so I'll see if that makes a difference. It's something I can live with but did kind of catch me off guard.

The only other Apple product I have is an iPod that I picked up a few years ago but honestly hardly ever used it. It's stuffed in a drawer somewhere. So I do not have major investment in the Apple ecosystem and would hold off on that for a while.

I'm curious to see what the iPhone 14 comes out with as well as the Pixel 7 Pro. Anxious to see the next step for both of those phones.

I'll try to remember and come give a more definitive response as to how I'm liking the iPhone after a couple months.

When desiring a quick check on the weather, someone please remind me which app provided an easier-to-understand-quickly weather status?

They're both fine. The right hand one shows you hourly trends, the left doesn't. The left has the daily information shown larger but that's of questionable advantage and which is better will depend on the individual.

You're making the common mistake of assuming the because you prefer the old version it's objectively better. It's not, it's different. Better in some ways, a wash (dependent on the person) in others and worse in others.

Ask if you get stuck on something that's important to you.

Since you're not firmly in the Apple universe, you're missing one of the better advantages of iOS so it will be interesting to see your thoughts in a bit.

We’ll no, I’m afraid you’re making the common mistake of mixing two things: features in either one that could be ported over to the other, vs how those features are presented to the user.

Pardon me for not being more straightforward, I assume that my argument would be plainly evident. Pretend both apps present the same features. Hourly and daily information, etc. Pretend that you’re looking at the information on the left one with the aesthetics of the right one or vice versa.

One app uses thicker fonts on a darker background that is objectively easier to read especially outdoors in the sun, and slickly uses weather icons with unique colors, shapes and textures that are different from each other (because they represent their real-life counterparts, which I know is a design sin to some), which permits near-instant cognition both because of their similarity to real life as well as the highly differentiated colors/shapes.

The other uses thinner font on a much lighter, low contrast background that’s generally more difficult to read especially outdoors in the sun, and uses stick figure weather icons that All look alike at 5 feet and look very similar at first close glance, requiring more time to take in and comprehend.

And yes, I do have a preference. I prefer an app that’s designed to present helpful information and is intuitive to operate and very easy to comprehend near instantly. Anything that veers from that is just unacceptable to me at least. See anything wrong with that?

[verbose pedantry deleted]

When you're making a point, it's up to you to make the point of why you think on design is better. Not to ask people 'well, imagine this was different...'

Oh for goodness sake ha ha. How did my 3rd paragraph of pedantry not do exactly that lol.

You failed to do it in the first wall of text. Then you asked me to imagine things were very different than they are which invalidates everything since you started by criticizing what is.

Your inability to recognize that your preferences != universal truth is your issue. I'm not indulging it for 20 paragraphs across 3 posts or whatever.

Yet here you are again. That’s ok. :)

You say you wanted to be set to Ignore? OK, wish granted.
You sure have a well honed tendency to interpret things in a way nowhere near the intentions of the author, as well as a tendency to put words in others’ mouths. I guess you won’t see this if you’re ignoring me, which is equally fine. :)

Welcome. My wife and I are pretty much as engrained as you can get into Apple and love it. I've tried using Android phones now and again and never liked them and the price tags the Samsung flagships carry with their cheap feeling build quality and horrible resale values make them a no go. Also I'd rather use smoke signals that touch Google.

What are some of the things you noticed? What did you like and not like?

If you really want to see what the fuss it all about then you need to see the way Apple products work together like AirPods, TVs, HomePods, MacBooks etc - that's what really sets Apple apart. Also the Family integration is excellent.

The hardest part is transferring WhatsApp history from Android to iPhone.

As far as I know that's impossible. Many paid apps claim they can do it but I have not seen one that actually works.

Right now, the only official way is a one way street, from iphone to Samsung phone running Android 12. Whatsapp said they would allow bidirectional transfer, but so far it's just an empty promise. Really frustrating.

Yeah I still keep my old Android phone and login WhatsApp to read old message when I really need. Export text only history to email can be done by export one contact each time only.

Which Android phone was it?
OnePlus 9 Pro.

It was the inconsistency of the UX that bugged me the most. Features were fine, but Android on OnePlus felt „beta“ to me in so many tiny details. Also the apps available for my work were not compatible mostly or did not work as precise. The hardware was great.

It has been my observation that there are distinctly different design philosophies at Apple and Google/Alphabet; Apple believes in the "It just works" model, wherein they want their customers to believe that their products are polished and honed to perfection prior to release, (whether true or not is another discussion) whereas Alphabet unabashedly throws around "beta" products very publicly like they're candy -- only problem being, that candy happens to be an every-flavor jelly bean, so you can never know for sure whether you're grabbing a toffee flavored bean or an earwax flavored bean.

I would speculate that this design philosophy may have played a not-insignificant role in your experiences.

I'm sorry, but I have had very good experiences with Android. I've used Motorola and Sony phones and all the apps have been available.
Usually the issue is the other way around. On iOS there are not enough apps available. And you can always download a new UX if you don't like the old one. You can easily make your phone look like iPhone.
I used to love Android, because of YouTube Vanced, but now that's gone too.

I made the move from Android (Samsung Note 20 Ultra 5G) to the iPhone 13 Pro Max in Jan and haven't regretted it at all

I'm lucky that I'm as much a fan of Android as I am with iOS; but also have a Pixel 4XL too which is still a superb Android handset with a fantastic camera...

But the 13 Pro Max for me, currently; beats anything from the Android set...

I did try the Samsung Z Fold 3; had it a week and hated the front screen and the camera tech was poor compared to the Note 20 Ultra; but a great idea with the main folding screen... If you want a tablet & mobile, all in one

The big appeal for me on the iPhone Pro Max is the flat, wide screen. I've shovel like hands, so the width of the screen is better suited to me; plus the camera is superb, as is the screen...

The Note 20 Ultra was a fantastic phone (had the S21 Ultra 5G before that) and if budget had allowed at that time, I'd have kept the Note 20 Ultra as my business mobile and sold the Pixel 4XL to fund towards the 13 Pro Max...

I may yet still buy another Note 20 Ultra as I do send a lot of texts to candidates & clients for my business (Digital) and the Pixel can sometimes be a bit small in my hands...

So far so good. I'm getting more used to the features and am still loving the battery life. The latest update seemed to help the stutter on the screen while scrolling but it still does it sometimes. I wish I had more time to dive into it deeper as far as learning more of the unique capabilities but with 2 little kids and a busy job it's difficult to do. So I try to learn more whenever I get a moment which hasn't been that often lately.

I'm not a fan of the lightning cable. USB C would be a much better choice but it is what it is. I knew that was the case going in. I own so many other devices which utilize USB C cables it would be nice not to have another cable to keep track of.

One thing I hope to test out more soon is the camera. Need to try and take a bunch of pictures sometime so I can see how it does.

Make sure you test out the macro camera, it’s amazing. ?
