You know what?? I was considering this new mac mini for some time. However, I finally realized that a MacBook Air is much better suit for me, and more versatile.

Honestly, I don’t plan to use it a lot on the go, because my iPad Pro is my main portable device, however, if some day I needed to use the mac in the street or the workplace, a Mac mini would limit me a lot.

Only if: 1) it’s VERY lightweight, 2) not very expensive, and 3) Apple allows me to buy a second power supply brick to have it on another place (being able to move the mini easily between my two workplaces) I’d consider getting one. Otherwise the MacBook Air is my tool of choice.

why tf do we need external PSU, mr artist?
this is not the space constrained iMac. no one had any issues with the size of the mini?
also, the render has an RJ45 port, which makes a fair share of the oversophisticated new-magsafe-ish power connector pointless.

NOOOOOOOOOO!

I bought the M1 Mini last year, my wife will kill me if I buy a new mini this year!

I hope this rumor is false :p

I personally hate using laptops as full-on desktop replacements. One of the problems is the number of ports. The other problem is finicky and inconsistent clamshell behaviour, and just the fact you need to plug-in and unplug each time.

But it's easier for me to buy desktops since I can just write them off for work on my taxes, so I'm biased that way.

Why would you think the M1 mini would be the only mini released?

I've got an OWC 10GbE to Thunderbolt 3 adapter just waiting for a Mini to live full time on my Desk, while My M1 MBP trundles around the house. It would be great to have a 10GbE port, but not likely for a less than maxed out Mini Pro.

The music industry is still using Rosetta at most or just x86. You would think Logic Pro being vital to Apple that they would have invested resources to accelerate the process. Or, the plan is not as rapid a transition as the fandom rumor sites persist on spreading.
The developers of Plug-Ins are going to take their sweet ass time in moving things over to native Apple Silicon and milk their customers as long as they can before updating and then charging them again. They did the same thing with the PowerPC to Intel transition. You’ll hear a smattering of platitudes about how they looking in to the feasibility of it or that they have a timeline that requires considerable QA and validation and then they’ll pry open their wallets, pay the devs to do it and Cha-Ching users for the privilege. Gotta try and preserve that mystery and mystique, y’know. Plus, the really slow on the uptake ones are still trying to figure out how to move to a subscription model without giving up those precious i-Lok dongles. Apple can only make them move so fast, because management at those companies hates change. Don’t try to blame apple for something that proactive companies should already be ready with from day one. It’s just a different mindset.

Mac mini M1 is the crippled/hobbled version of this thing that will be insanely expensive for decent memory and ssd size.

512/32 will cost you $1999, just watch

No chance in hell it will be $1999. Not even close.

Probably more like $1299. Or at worst $1499.

EDIT:

I was under the mistaken impression that the 16->32 GB memory upgrade was $200, but I'm told it was $400. If so, then I amend the post above to say a 32 GB / 512 GB M1 Pro Mac mini would probably be more like $1499, or at worst $1699.

For all of you Mini fans... just curious why you'd choose it over, say, the rumored larger iMac that will come out next year?

Because it costs a lot less of course.

In my case, it'd replace an old Mac Pro. I already have the monitor, camera, speakers, keyboard, and mouse.

I'm wondering what kind of price markup Apple is going to put on the Mini.

I'm guessing a much higher price tag...but much faster as well.
They will want to differentiate it enough...otherwise everyone will be getting the very capable and inexpensive current M1.

I'm curious as to what the new model will offer. But so far I've been really happy with my M1 mini. I'm always open to faster 4k processing. But we'll see if I'm willing to pay the price they'll ask for that power.

More thunderbolt ports than the new Macbook Pro?

The three TB ports on the leaked MBP schematics seem odd. I know it would be disappointing, but part of me still suspects that it is going to be 2 x TB/USB4 and one USB 3.2 (the 24" iMac shows that Apple are prepared to mix them up). So the Mini could be 2xUSB4/TB and 2xUSB-C/3.2...

On the other hand, being a desktop with no internal display, it makes sense to have an extra port capable of driving a display (and you have the "spare" DisplayPort stream to drive it...)

since this it doesnt have sd card...yes
Only if the MBP gets a super-fast SD Express slot that needs a lot of bandwidth. We'll see - but even the 2020 iMac 5k only has UHS-II which is still USB 3 speeds, and they could probably find one of those without dedicating a whole TB controller to it.

Maybe the MBP is using a 4th TB controller on the SoC to drive the SD and HDMI - whereas the Mini has the unused internal display output to drive the HDMI. Or maybe the leaked schematics are just hogwash...

Thing is, we don't really know what the actual internal I/O provision of the M1 - let alone the M1XProSuperMax - is, beyond it having two USB4/TB3 controllers and max. 2 displays. The existing M1 Mini somehow found bandwidth for a 10G Ethernet controller (and, ISTR, Linus Tech Tips did a video where they established that it wasn't leeching off the TB ports), so there must have been a PCIe lane or two floating around...

I‘ve been waiting for the new MBPs for so long but with these „notch, thick & heavy“ rumors I might just go with the mini.
The notch sounds silly and a bit ugly - but the same rumours suggest that it has been achieved by making the screen a bit higher than 16:10 so nothing of value has been lost.

As for "thick and heavy"... kids these days never carried around a G3. Apple could go back to the size and weight of the 2015 MBP and still be impressively thin and light for the amount of power they pack. A lot of the complaints and issues with the 2016 MBPs was down to too much being sacrificed for "thin'n'light".

My thinking was that the built in port could support up to 10gig Ethernet,

From the 24" iMac teardown, it looks like the Ethernet controller is on the mainboard and the magnetic connector/power brick are just acting as an ethernet cable - it's not some clever arrangement where there's USB or Thunderbolt down the cable and the controller is in the brick. I see no reason why the connector and brick shouldn't support 10gig if there was a 10gig controller on the main board.

My guess would be $1299 for 16GB/512GB and $1699 for the 32GB/512GB based on Apple’s BTO cost for the 16GB to 32GB upgrade on MacBook Pro and current Intel mini. I reckoned the cost of a possible Mac mini Pro to +$200 for the 16GB DRAM (from 8GB) and +$200 for the M1X over the base $899 8GB/512GB M1 Mac mini Apple currently sells to get to the $1299.

We don't know until we know, but until then there's no reason to assume it won't be the same $1099 as the i5 Intel Mini - or maybe $1299 if it starts with 16GB RAM (modulo any across-the-board price hike because pandemic and chipageddon). All the M1 prices so far have been the same as the Intel model they replace apart from the Mini which was cheaper.
