Interesting finding

If you select a mac mini configuration and do an "upgrade", the shipping days would be reduced to 1-3 business days!

two hows..

How is it that Apple is able to keep an upgrade like this secret, especially being that the things are built by other companies in different countries?

How do we know that the 3-5 days lag doesn't just mean a freescale parts shortage in the 1.33 and 1.42 GHz cpus?

Freescale has been making the same part for over two years. If they haven't gotten it right by now, Apple should just say say "screw it" and go to Int...

Oh, wait a minute.... ;) :D

1 min here on EST!........annnnnnddd nothing.........im goin to bed, see you guys at 9! :D

Just a speed bump and a grafx update.

I don't know what you all are getting so excited about...

The processor speed will be 1.33-1.42 ghz (has to be less then 1.5 ghz.)

FX5200 Grafx card.

Maybe a change in the display, but probably not.

512 RAM Standard

Same 60 GB drives

Same Form factor probably.

Still 2+ yrs behind PC/Intel in performance. Overpriced, underfeatured.

It's not hard to figure out people.

thankx for the kind words guys!!!! :D

These are all very valid points when it comes to software, but another component, and a more major one in my opinion, is the OS itself, which you never really commented on. I put a lot of weight into the fact that, to me, OS X is superior to Windows (subjective statement of course, I realize, nonetheless the user’s experience/perception is all that matters in most cases) which is a big advantage to me in using a Mac over a Windows PC. I have no issues per se with Windows, as it runs fine for me on my work PC (XP Pro) and my server at home (Win2k3 Enterprise) so I am definitely not one of the many “Window smashers” or anti-MS fanatics you sometimes see on the Forums here who blindly hate MS “just cuz”, but I do simply find OS X to be superior to Windows. Plain and simple. Ease of use, security (UNIX), no viruses/spyware and no need for software to block these things, stability, responsiveness, no registry, simple... I could go on...

Any thoughts specifically pertaining to the OS?

I feel the Mac has better fit and finish but that Windows is more capable. I'm more used to how Windows works than how the Mac works so I feel Windows is usually easier to use. For instance, I think the menubar, one button mouse, and keyboard shortcuts on a Mac are borderline retarded (command-shift A/U is great though). But using a Mac really makes you rethink certian Windows concepts like tabbed interfaces in preference dialogs and MDI. There are lots of things I prefer about the Mac OS but I don't think it's easier to use. To me it's a right-brain/left-brain issue. Some people like cats and some people like dogs. I'm a cat person, go figure.

Mostly, I use a lot of cross-platform software packages like Photoshop, After Effects, Reason etc. so I'm not particular to either platform for my professional work. I don't like Logic or FCP but I'm comfortable with them. I could, theoretically, switch to a Mac for my Pro stuff and be completely comfortable with it. The problem is that PowerMacs are way too expensive for the performance and features they offer IMO.

Stability-wise, I feel 10.3.9 was about the same as my XP SP2 machines. XP is a better multitasker especially with SMP but the Mac feels much smoother. I have no use for anything Unix related so that's not an attraction to me.

Responsiveness, I feel XP is much better in that area. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, IE, Paint, etc. launch instantly on on my PC but I have yet to find anything that launches as fast on the Mac. Scrolling and resizing Windows on a Mac is a joke IMO. Killing programs on the Mac is usually much more reliable than on XP though.

Security-- I've never had a security problem with any OS even Windows 95 so maybe I'm just lucky. I was subject to a ton of spyware and adware before SP2 showed up but since then I get next to nothing. I run adware about once every three months and all it finds is a couple of harmless cookies. Norton actually came with my mobo, I installed it and my computer wouldn't boot, so I did a system restore and never went back. So I've never officially ran anti-virus software either.

Registry-- the registry sucked in Win9X but I wouldn't even know it's there in XP. Never had any registry problems on XP and it's actually more of a boon than a problem. For instance, when you do an "open with" on XP it lists all the programs installed on the system whereas OS X just opens up the applications folder. Not all my apps are in the application folder (or they may be buried several levels deep) and that's a problem. The registry helps with things like that. Interestingly enough, the registry never gets corrupted by somehow preferences on OS X do

If they're smart, they'll put eSATA ports on the new Mac Minis for attaching external storage. Yes, you can put attach external storage thru the usb2 and firewire ports but requiring usb and firewire bridgeboards on the external drives ups the cost of external storage considerably. What would be really cool is some kind of modular external storage device that the Mac Mini would connect directly to and get rid of the inboard disk drive and replace it with flash memory instead.

lol mac micro!

that would be awesome. It is a scaled down mac mini that fits in the palm of your hand. It has like 256/512mb ram built in, a g4 processor, built in 8gb microdrive with the OS, microdrive slot loader to insert more memory, bluetooth, AE, 2 usb port, 1 firewire, audio out, and a mini DVI with adapters to anything (including a/v for your tv)...

you could literally take the computer anywhere in the palm of your hand!

Why would you predict 1.33 GHz and FX5200 GPU when the eMac has 1.42 GHz and 64 MB ATI Radeon 9600? I think the Mac Mini and ibook will both move up to these at the minimum, keeping the low-end models along the same lines. That is, unless the Intel chip is introduced.

what time are the updates usually anounced im going golfing at 9am eastern time tomorrow which is only 6am in cali so i assume the updates wont be announced before i leave

I say 1.33 and 1.5 for the iBooks and the PBs will soon get updated to 1.67 for the 12" and Combo 15" and 1.8 for the SuperDrive Model 15 and 17"?

You serious? That is really cool! He seems like a truly hilarious person...classic movie, too [office space]. Thanks for noticing :D

Yes, absolutely - the movie is called "Just Friends" and will be out around Christmas 2005 - it stars Stephen Root, Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart and Anna Farris. It was very cool to be a part of it, (Stephen is awesome!), although it'll end up that you'll probably only be able to see my back in it for 5 seconds or something to that effect. ;)

Anyway, back on topic, apologies for the tangent...

1.42 Ghz will probably be max. 1.33 12" and 1.42ghz 14" (assuming no change in display.) I'll admit a screen size/ratio change is a possibility.

ATI 9600 instead of FX5200? Perhaps. But 9600 would be the highest it would be. And from what I have found I don't see a whole lot of difference in performance between those two grafx processors.

No Intel chips. Steve said it would be at least a year. I think introducing them so soon would hurt his credibility.

Maybe some other minor feature updates, but nothing revolutionary. Non Jobs introduced updates are allways speedbumps.

I assume that we'll see a slight speed bump, increased standard memory (512), bigger standard HD (same speed, though), maybe Bluetooth standard, SuperDrive now as BTO and a more capable video card.

I'd love to say that we'll see a widescreen display but I highly doubt it. As much as it would make sense for them to do a redesign since it's been so long since an update and a form factor change, you also have to take into account that they could very well not make another iBook update for another 9 months and then release a redesigned Intel iBook -- they may have had this planned for a while and just spaced out the updates to give themselves more time.

But who knows. At this point, it's all speculation. I'd like to see SOMETHING really awesome but I'm not going to hold my breath.

While this is typically true, you should know that the iBook G4 was introduced without any fanfare at all. Just a press release and an appearance on the Home Page.

If you get a half-decent video-card in there, 512MB of RAM and (maybe) a 5400RPM drive, the 12" iBook at $999 is a fine deal.

The cheapest 12" notebook I see at CompUSA.com is an Averatec 1.6 Pentium M/Centrino, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD - for $1289.

The Powerbooks, right now, are not a good deal at their price. But the 12" iBook looks like an excellent balance of performance/price. (assuming the screen doesn't suck - the one I glanced at at the Apple Store was dark, but that could have been angle/setting)

I just called Apple, spoke to a rep. After much talking to him I got him to spill the beans. IBOOK UPDATE TOMMOROW for SURE!!!! GUARANTEED!!! Since he spilled the beans I thought of posting his extension (so he can get more sales from MR members as a reward for spilling the beans) but ended up not incase he may get in trouble. Peace out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Different strokes for different folks - nothing more needs to be said. Neither opinion is either right nor wrong, and it's what keep this world interesting after all! IO guess that perhaps makes me a dog person.... ;)

Agreed. They are amazing machines, but sooo pricey in my opinion - especially if you have to throw in a new display for it.

Apart from the resizing issue with OS X, which I agree with you on, although I have not experienced any serious response issues with Windows in a long time, I still find my Mac to be better. Another one of those subjective things, perhaps...

I hear what you're saying, as I have had no incidents throughout my PC use either - I think it's just a thing of being smart and proactive. I still think it's worth something though that OS X has essentially zero spyware/adware/viruses written for it, while Windows has a myriad of these potential security risks.

BGil said:

I agree with both points - the registry has come a long way in Windows.

I never have either, but I guess it's more the philosophy or concept of a registry which I'm not a huge fan of.

This is something I have never experienced, so I can't really comment on that.

Again, thanks for the intelligent discussion on the matter!
