I need it by tuesday, and again, I dind't buy it directly from apple (it's brand new, certified reseller).

Yes you can return iBooks with dead pixels just give apple a call.....The iBooks will not be updated until the end of the month but it will definatly be within this time frame.....Some rumor sites have stated that Apple aim to make all Macs Tiger compatible by the end of the month of June.

So hopefully Mini's this week and iBooks soon after.....

blehhh

Hi, I'm new here. Never used an Apple before, but I'm on my college laptop search and iBook seems to be the most appealing thing to me by far. I have been thinking about various Dells but I just don't really like them as much, and I've had my share of windows problems! I have to say I'm disappointed but holding out for the education conference. I actually don't really care to have "top of the line," but I'd feel dumb if I bought one right before an update anyway. I mean, for four years I've had the same computer (emachines, intel celeron, 256 mb ram, 4 Gig hard drive haha) so anything newish will seem awesome to me! My brother has leftover Powerbook G4 RAM (256) that I can add to an iBook so I don't care too much about a ram upgrade... both my brother (a recent switcher) and a friend who is a lifetime Mac user told me they'd update this past week but alas. I guess I can wait a while, but my school starts mid-August and I'd like to have it fairly long in advance so... it better be pretty soon.

Still wait. I'll be amazed and equally shirty if they aren't updated by mid-July. All signs are currently pointing to June 27. They will be updated soon. They have to be!

I'm in the same boat (almost). RAM isn't an issue because I'll get more through Crucial, I'll get a bigger HD elsewhere but the graphics card is what I want. For now it's mainly for a ripple effect in Dashboard but you never know what it will mean in the next year or two.

Wait and get frustrated with us. :)

Sure am frustrated. I've got a 1 Ghz eMac, which I intend to complement with an iBook, and then I intend on using them for the next 5-7 years with very little upgrading. I have some fairly good options for buying an iBook now, and am wondering if the updated graphics card is really that important. It seems not?

well, i totally would wait except my dad is really pressuring me to do it now so we can use the $100 rebate that someone else pointed out earlier. and since i'm adding some RAM and upgrading hard drive through some means, i'm not sure i need to wait for an upgrade that doesn't seem likely to be very big. i mean, is the main consensus that most of the things probably won't see a huge upgrade? i visited CompUSA today and checked out some laptops, and i already really like the current iBooks... it's just such a gamble i guess. i know it seems really likely they will update after that rebate is over, but also likely that it won't be a giant rebate. my guess is that since i'm upgrading from the basic specs anyway it may just about even out... thoughts?

Any 100$ discount will easily be surpassed by the value of upgrades in RAM, video card, Bluetooth, etc.

I`m in the same boat as you (pressure from my wife), but I`m waiting.

WoW on iBooks

i've never been into games, with broadband I might like to get in to them a bit (something like World of Warcraft or something)
Regards
Dan.

I am currently running World of Warcraft on my 12" iBook with 512 MB Ram.
it is a current iBook, I do not get the highest framerates from the game and sometimes it does jump a bit, but it is playable and I am quite happy with the performance I get from it.

So if it runs on the 1.2 GHz iBook it should run ok on the 1.4 GHz iBook as well hi hi

of course I am running it 800x600 windowed as opposed to fullscreen, but it works and I am happy with playing it that way

Possible upgrades:
RAM upgrade
Should be bumped to 512MB but maybe not. Either way, if you want to go above 512MB with third party RAM, this isn't worth much as you'll just have a 256MB stick with no home. I plan to go all out and go 1.25GB. Yeah!!

HD upgrade
30GB is not acceptable and hopefully Apple realise this. So if it jumps to 60GB then this could be almost $100 value right there.

Graphics Upgrade
Now, this isn't a "must have" for most of us with day to day tasks but graphics are only going to improve and seeing as these are not easy to upgrade (if not impossible), this is a big issue. So in an odd way, this upgrade has no definite $ value. But this for me is the biggest reason to wait. Why miss out on new technology by a few weeks?

Bluetooth
I doubt this will be part of the upgrade. Mainly because this is Powerbook territory plus, really... who needs Bluetooth with a laptop? I know I don't.

Speed Bump
Probably a bump of 133MHz. Hardly anything to write home about but it's something.

So, with the above (minus bluetooth), it's fair to say there's potentially more than $100 value in the upgrades. Explain that to your dad. Make up figures if you want. Say with a current model plus all the necessary upgrades, you'll be paying more than $100 than if you wait for the upgrades. It's a gamble as we don't know what the upgrades will hold but life is full of risks.

Or... simply put... The $100 rebate isn't Apple being generous. They want to shift these old machines. Emphasise OLD :D

60gb hd isn't a must on this comp. 512 ram right off the beginning isn't guaranteed on next rev, since the new eMac didn't get it either. Bluetooth will be left out from standard package, but can be obtained as BT 2.0.

I except just a better graph card and a slight speedbump. They'll also most likely bump the system bus speed, because it'll make the machine snappier but will cost next to nothing.

That's how I see the next iBook, and I might be wrong.

a system bus bump would help greatly!

133 is just not so good :\

It's certainly not a must but I would be amazed if Apple don't upgrade from the 30GB. There is no way 30GB is adequate when you consider the disk space just to run Tiger and pre-installed apps.

Especially when you consider the amount of music that the iBook's target audience, (students,) are likely to have from their iPod.

I gave it and bought a 12" iBook yesterday, but I'm having some doubts.

I bought a "Refresh" from the local Apple store. It's a base 12", so it has a 30GB drive, and that's where I'm having doubts.

By deleting OS9 and GarageBand, I'm at 14GB free after transfering our 4GB iPhoto library and 300MB iTunes libraray, but that's not alot if you factor in about 1-1.5GB of pictures per year and iTunes growth. (I have 6GB of MP3s on my machine, btw.)

I paid $750 for this refreshed 12". I have until 6/25 to return it, and no restocking fee since it was already opened. The iBook is my wife's, and she'd like to just keep and and really start using it. $750 is a hell of a deal, and to get a current iBook with a bigger drive is going to cost an additional $300 or more. Tough decision.

You are probably wasting a lot of hard disk space with locales and printer drivers. I would suggest doing a clean install but customize and untick all printer drivers additional languages/fonts/etc. You'll save heaps of space. (1+gb in printer drivers alone)

Is it just me or does apple not post reburbished/sales on their products for Canada. The US store from their homepage, lists a few products,(including the ibook, which I want) but no such link for Canada. What gives???

Don't forget, when an upgrade comes out (and sometimes a week before) Apple has in recent history dropped the price of the "older" machines. You'd stand to save that $100+ even if you bought the same machine about the time the others come out.

I need one by mid-august too. I feel your pain.

hmm so if there were an upgrade, it would probably cost the same price as the current ones, right? my dad doesn't believe me and thinks that any new upgrade is going to automatically cost more than the base price now... i wish i hadn't even told him about the rebate  lol. that would make it easier for me to convince him to let me just wait and see.

Show him the buyers guide on here. That lists the price of each machine with it's upgrades. That way he'll see the price never goes up and that sometimes the price even goes down!

Be strong! We must convince your dad to wait!! :p

There's no way the price goes up (okay, maybe a 1/2 % chance). If anything I'd expect a price drop but most likely the price stays the same.

Powerbook Ram in NEW Ibook

 I bought a 1 gig stick of ram, Kingston, for my 1.5 powerbook. However, my Powerbook came with 3 DOAs in a row. 1. Dead DVD Drive, 2. Dead HD, 3. Warped frame and broken latch. The ram worked fine in the powerbook, but I'm wondering if it would work in the NEW UPCOMING (but slow to show) ibooks. Of course this would just be speculation... but I'm curious cause I'm stuck with a 1 gig stick of ram...

in case your wondering.. after the 3rd DOA, i just got fed up with dealing with the Apple Genius eediots and got a full refund... plus i heard that the Ibook maybe upgraded soon (this was 1 month ago)...

any ideas as to whether it would werk?

Bluetooth
I doubt this will be part of the upgrade. Mainly because this is Powerbook territory plus, really... who needs Bluetooth with a laptop? I know I don't.

That statemant is an example of pure ignorance and arrogance. Just because YOU don't, who says others don't? Cause I do and I'm not alone. I won't buy a laptop without Bluetooth. And about your assumtion regarding with a laptop specificly. Is there any reason why Bluetooth would be more nessacary on a desktop? Ofcourse not. But why is there Bluetooth standard now on the new iMacs? Bluetooth is sure as hell more useful on a laptop than a desktop. Does that tell you something? It means that whether the feature is in there or not, it doesn't hurt you one bit. And it makes people like me more likely to buy an Apple laptop because we can waddle in to a store any day and pick it up without having to custom order the laptop. Mark my words, if there is Bluetoth in a desktop revision released two months before the iBook, there WILL be standard Bluetooth in the next iBook revison. It's just a matter of time till it becomes standard across the board. Same goes for PCs. The chipsets are so chaep now to put in. And Apple can push their Bluetooth hardware. Makes sense for them, makes sense for us.
