Not necessarily...

I never miss a day of this fine post as I wait all the way over here in NZ to get my damned new iBook. And I have to wait an EXTRA DAY each week because of the time difference.
Now it's too late to get a Powerbook instead because they're mid-cycle and that would defeat the whole reason I'm waiting for the latest! Such dilemma...
I was looking back over the iBook release dates and in fact last October was the only time they've been released on a Tuesday. Every other update's been on a Monday or a Wednesday. So tomorrow maybe (that's today for most of you)?

Why would you do that? Do you need it right away? I guess I can say this because i can still wait a couple months before i need one... anyways, its gotta come before school starts back.

my new 12" iBook just got delivered to the shop today, i'm off to pick it up in 1 hour and 20 minutes (not that I'm counting).

I was told 3 to 4 weeks (as I got a 60gb HDD and extra ram), and it was ready in 1.5 weeks... gotta be happy with that :)

Hey first post, I am totally new to macs and hope to get a 12" ibook for my Bday which i hope to order so it arrives before 18th August (even though my bday is this month :p) I am just hoping they update prior to then and not at PAris as that would be too late. I am only going to need the ibook for roughly a year as i will probably upgrade to something better prior to goin to uni next year. 28th June has to be the day if apple has any ideas about profit, if new ibooks come out in september it will be too late for the educational market and apple will loose out. O and i dont see a problem with the top end ibook overlaping with the bottom end powerbook, ppl buy the powerbook for different reasons and I have seen them slightly overlap before so i dont beleive it is an issue. I doubt they will update the ram thou, I think it will remain at 256 like the emacs even thou this is apparently inadequate for Tiger, I cant see myself buying something that cant run the operating system to a decent potential (ie graphics and vram) but the ram is easily upgraded so thats not a problem for me. fingers crossed for 28th June!

iBook fine for uni

Unless you need to do special image or video editing for your studies, the iBook you can buy today will probably still suit your university-needs just fine in one or two years time.

I was on the phone with Apple Customer Service and they are sending me a new ibook to replace my current one, which has a manufacturing defect. They let it slip that my new iBook will not even ship for at least two weeks, as there have not been any special builds allowed for 5 weeks, and the specs of my replacement will not even be available until sometime next week. If this does not mean a new iBook at WWDC, then I live on mars! Way to Go Apple!

So..What's the update with this rumor? Has your ibook been sent? Is there a chance the ibook might be updated next week? :(

This is getting to be stupidly rediculous. Look at us, sitting here in front of our computers everyday, at the mercy of Apple!

I know. Especially seeing as we're now bumping the Tuesday to whatever is the next event.

I'm now holding out for the NECC starting June 27. It kind of makes sense to have the updates before then... doesn't it? It's now 2 months of waiting for me. What's a few more weeks?

And to those saying "buy now", I just don't think it makes sense with the iBook. You can update RAM and HD but I want the graphics memory to run Tiger properly and I expect the next update to do just that.

Now I'm almost positive that it will be a minor update, which means they are just going to put it out one of these days, no need to announce it at an event.

Let's go apple! We are all waiting for the upgraded iBooks!

Yes, 64MB VRAM is exactly what I'm waiting for. Other wants for the 12" are:
1.33Ghz CPU (14" can get 1.42 or 1.5 Ghz)
Built-in BT
512MB RAM built in (but that might be pushing it)
60GB HD (14" can get 80GB +)

<taps foot, waiting impatiently>

BTW, this iBook will be for my wife. Her G4 iMac will be mine until an Intel based Powerbook (or equivalent) is released that I can hopefully run OSX Leopard and Windows XP/Longhorn in a virtual environment (not dual-boot). I'm a Wintel SA by day, OSX wannbe by night. ;)

...sounds exactly like you need a 12 inch powerbook!

Nah. The 12" PowerBook still has more features, including a 1.5Ghz G4.

I can hope, right?

i am hoping for basically the same thing as you. i am at the point where i have waited far too long for an updated ibook and don't want to buy the current one due to having to upgrade too many bits (the hard disk, add bluetooth, more ram etc), and i think the graphics card is outdated, so i'm now considering the 12 inch powerbook instead.

BUT if the ibook were to be updated soon and they upgrade the various components you mentioned it would be almost identical to the powerbook spec yet £350 (GBP) cheaper! i can't see that happening. they'd surely have to update the p'book first, or around the same time. but the current p'book was only updated about 4 months ago... aaarrgh....

The 12" PB is $500 more than the current 12" iBook. I definitely can't look at the PB right now.

Honestly, I'd be happy with a Video card update and CPU bump to 1.33Ghz. I still think the 12" can have the 1.33Ghz and 14" have the 1.42 or even the 1.5Ghz and still be OK, product-line wise. I have nothing that could make use of BT right now, so that's not important to me.

No matter what amount of RAM the iBook ends up shipping with, I'll order an upgrade from Crucial immediately. The current price on a 1GB SO-DIMM from Crucial is US$133. 512MB is US$113. That's about the strangest memory pricing I've seen in a while, but I'm not complaining.

Apple please release a new iBook! I come home everyday after my exams hoping you've released it and everyday i am sad when you don't...I really want to have this iBook for the days my exams finish which is tuesday the 21st. Put me out of my misery!!!!!!!!!!11

I cant see anything but that happening due to the PB issue

14"
G4 1.42 Ghz
mobile graphics card with 64mb vram
256mb ram

12"
G4 1.2 Ghz
mobile graphics card with 64mb vram
256mb ram

i realistically doubt anything else will be added to the ibook line to keep cost down but still maintain a healthy balance between ibook and Powerbook sales

Possibly another sign of a pending update:

Bestbuy.com is out of stock on 12" iBooks.

My wife is just as impatient as I am. She want's her iBook. Ugh! ;)

Maybe they have just sold many now because many have given up on waiting? :D

Well, I bought my iBook today (12" combo), partly being impatient to wait, but mostly because i'm leaving the country within a week.

I can't complain since I'm getting a good price (edu, edu rebate, store bundle discount). The biggest thing I will miss out if the update is soon is not the vram in my opinion, but the ram and hd update that is almost a good bet to be updated. I feel like 80% of the people on this forum are not buying only out of pride of paying the same price as they would have in oct when these first came out (a well warrented reason at that), and the others just don't want to pay for the extra upgrades that they'd miss out on (esp on something as ram).

I, being humanly selfish, now hope that it won't update for at least a month, but even then, I think i've waited enough (1 month). I'm just looking to enjoy my ibook.

Two questions, 1) is anyone going to buy a combo or a laptop lock? I"m going to be living in the dorms for about two months and I'll need one without a doubt, but just wondering if anyone had stories of people having their laptop stolen primarily because tehy didn't have a lock on it to deter (not prevent) the theft from occuring. The reason I'm wondering is because I bought the kensington guarenteed replacement lock, which comes at a $20 premium more than the other locks, and wondering if the theft happened by cutting the cable, which is the only thing the warranty is good for.

and 2) have you guys (and girls) decided on how MUCH ram to upgrade. It's a given that the ram will need to be updated, and I'm caught between 512 and 1 gb. Of course price is an issue (ranging from about $50-60 for a 512 non crucial and about $130 for a 1gb crucial), but I'm weighing the cost/benefits and all that marginal gain and stuff. If you can chime in with advice to go either way that'd be great. Just want to know everyone's opinions thats all.

For those waiting, good luck.

Well... it looks like the IBOOK is not being updated.... It seems like NECC is a good place for an Ibook update seeing as how its an education thang... and ibooks are thought as 'student' machines.... and its the next big event thats going on.... The upgrades better be revolutionairy and mind blowing... or else i will be sad.... so so sad....
