Well, I bought my iBook today (12" combo), partly being impatient to wait, but mostly because i'm leaving the country within a week.

I can't complain since I'm getting a good price (edu, edu rebate, store bundle discount). The biggest thing I will miss out if the update is soon is not the vram in my opinion, but the ram and hd update that is almost a good bet to be updated. I feel like 80% of the people on this forum are not buying only out of pride of paying the same price as they would have in oct when these first came out (a well warrented reason at that), and the others just don't want to pay for the extra upgrades that they'd miss out on (esp on something as ram).

I, being humanly selfish, now hope that it won't update for at least a month, but even then, I think i've waited enough (1 month). I'm just looking to enjoy my ibook.

Two questions, 1) is anyone going to buy a combo or a laptop lock? I"m going to be living in the dorms for about two months and I'll need one without a doubt, but just wondering if anyone had stories of people having their laptop stolen primarily because tehy didn't have a lock on it to deter (not prevent) the theft from occuring. The reason I'm wondering is because I bought the kensington guarenteed replacement lock, which comes at a $20 premium more than the other locks, and wondering if the theft happened by cutting the cable, which is the only thing the warranty is good for.

and 2) have you guys (and girls) decided on how MUCH ram to upgrade. It's a given that the ram will need to be updated, and I'm caught between 512 and 1 gb. Of course price is an issue (ranging from about $50-60 for a 512 non crucial and about $130 for a 1gb crucial), but I'm weighing the cost/benefits and all that marginal gain and stuff. If you can chime in with advice to go either way that'd be great. Just want to know everyone's opinions thats all.

For those waiting, good luck.

Yep, I'm not ordering out of pride. Although, my patience is dwindling.

I'd say go 1GB RAM, unless the cheap 512MB has a good warranty and is trustworthy. Bad ram causes major headaches. Crucial RAM is worth the money, IMO. I'll be going with a 1GB upgrade (depending on what the iBook ends up shipping with).

What is the store bundle discount?

Just a special for students only at my university. Not open to the public pretty much which is why I didn't describe in detail so yeah.

It does eventually. :D

Not if there's no water in it!!!! As in this whole Ibook conspiracy!!! There's never gonna be an update... we've all been duped... they're probably gonna cut the whole ibook series... the man on the grassy knol told me so!!!

oh for gods sake....

OK, been waiting for the Ibook updates. Don't know when it's gonna happen, if ever and i'm dying to buy.

I'm not techie at all and was looking to switch to Apple after deciding to bin windows. My main computer use has been internet, email, running a small part time business but I reckon my usage will change as i'm going to get broadband once i've got a new machine.

I decided on the Ibook because I like the look of the iLife Suite.

Basically I would like to know if the current 14inch Ibook would suit for downloading and burning DVD's as well as music and although i've never been into games, with broadband I might like to get in to them a bit (something like World of Warcraft or something) and a bit of home movie editing?

waddaya reckon???

Regards
Dan.

dont know about the games, but the rest should not pose a problem

the 14" ibook is a bit crap unless you have crap eye sight, the screen has the same resulution as the 12" so you can just move your head slightly coser to the screen for the same effect, also the 14" is bigger bulkier and a fair bit heavier, you can get external dvd bunrers cheap there days (get a firewire one much better than usb2 ones)

personally i'd get a 12" ibook and a burner or a 15" powerbook.

edit: typo meant heavier not slower :| anyway 133MHz is nothing

How is the 14" slower? It has a 1.33Ghz G4 vs 1.2Ghz G4 of the 12"?

It would be nice to be able to up the resolution of the 14".

I agree, it makes no sense when you look at the competing PC laptops which have better resolution, (also up the resolution on the 12".) iBooks and PBs appeal to different markets so it wouldn't eat in to PB territory.

sorry ibook n00b.
what exactly is their resolutions.. and why is it bad that they are the same???

... a nice updated feature would be superdrives in the 12'' models... does anyone else agree??

the screen space, usually with a larger screen you have more space to work but with the 14" ibook the screen is just enlarged so is more grainy.

I dont know if they would ever put superdrives in a 12" iBook but i would love it if they did. Most people that get iBooks dont really need one.

Here comes another weekend waiting for that Tuesday when the update finally happens but I seriously doubt it will be this Tuesday.

I tend to agree. With that edu discount still running, why would apple give $100 + standard discount on a new iBook?

Roll on June 27. I haven't even got Tiger yet. I've been waiting for the new iBooks before I enjoy the new OS. And looking at all the widgets, I want Tiger real bad! Gimmick, yes, but a fun gimmick!!

I think this Tuesday makes perfect sense. The dust has settled after the whole Intel thing, people are becoming more rational and most importantly the damn machine needs an update. Bad. The iBook had always been very consistent in update cycles but now it's way over due.
Personally I'm hoping the powerbook gets a bit of a bump this Tuesday along with the iBook. The iBook just the essentials (Graphics card, RAM, and HD in the 12") and the Powerbook just a general bump along with maybe a new little feature (like the two finger scrolling in the last ones.) The timing makes sense for the PBs, it's been about five and a half months, (which is a little soon, yes) but if they unveil the intel PB this winter that makes sense. Not to mention the whole iBook on toes of Powerbook thing.

Anyway, the only reason I care is because I am getting a new notebook soon, and want the powerbook, but don't really mind waiting a few weeks if it'll get me a bit better computer at maybe a lower price. Or if the iBook gets a nice enough bump I'd just go for that then maybe an intel Powerbook rev b.

Right, so, everyone focus your energies on making it this Tuesday. Or heck, how about tomorrow, do they do Saturday releases? I'm getting impatient.

Phew.

If they were to update the iBook next Tuesday, I would crap my pance.
Like many people I have been waiting for an update for a while now, and I am starting to lose hope.
I desperatley want them to update the iBook, just because I wouldn't be able to stand if an update came out 2 weeks after my purchase.
I know that i shouldnt wait forever, but considering iBooks are indeed overdue, I can't bring myself to buy one now.
I truly want this speculation to be true.

As much as I like my baseless predictions it's probably more likely that they do a quick bump to the iBook after the edu rebate ends. Maybe I should just go get one tomorrow....

Actually, it's only been 4 months, 10 days, etc.... PB's were last updated on Jan. 31, 2005. I don't think PB's will see an update until July/Aug at the earliest. But I sure hope I'm wrong.

If SD's were put in the 12" iBooks then they'd really be too similar to the 12" PB. Not going to happen.

All Macs come with iLife. Get the 15" PB. Come on, you know you want it. :D

So, I opened up my new ibook 12 " and I'm already really pissed at Apple. Well, will be pissed if they don't take an exchange.

There's a single dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. If it were off to the side then I would be unhappy, but it's right in the middle of the screen where I'll see it pretty much everytime I use my laptop.

I didn't buy it directly from Apple so I'm not sure even if they'll consider my case of replacing it. My question is, do I even have a case for a return?

I personally don't think so. Such an uphappy 'switcher' right from the start. Dang.
