How do you upgrade the hell out of an iBook? Do you just mean upgrading the RAM? or is there something else you can do to upgrade it?

I plan on upgrading RAM and the HD. 4200rpm is just a littl slow for my liking. But seeing as I'll be outlaying $1500-$2000 on the iBook, what's a few more hundred to make it even better. :)

i decided i couldnt wait anymore. went to the apple store tonight and bought a 12" ibook. i have 14 days to return it, so if they're gonna drop the new model, hopefully they'll do it next week.

one thing i was super bummed to find is that i cant use the 512 ram from my g3 ibook in this one, so i gotta get all new ram. suck city. oh well.

It's a photoshop job! The person who posted it did it. If you read the whole thread you'll see they even made a black one.

What thread? Maybe it was photoshopped to show what the REAL one would kinda look like ;)... wishful thinking

EPIPHANY!

So. There I was. Like all of you.
Waiting impatiently for the iBook. that. never. came.

... and then I saw it................. the (gasp) 12" POWERBOOK!
It was fast. It was fit. It had the power. And it was oh so sexy.

So Came The Epiphany: What are you waiting for bird-brain? A better iBook? Ptwash.
So I bought it on the spot.

And so should you, my fine friends. None of us need be disappointed any longer.

PS - don't be letting a little intel transition put you off.
Jobsy has it covered.

The PBook is good, but it doesn't the battery life or durability of an iBook. Plus it's more expensive.

Exactly. That's why I'm waiting.

For the same amount as a Powerbook, I can get an iBook with 1.25GB Ram, a 80GB HD with 8MB cache and an external DL DVD Burner with Lightscribe.

With the iBook comes better Airport Reception, stronger case and a bit more software.

And seeing as I want the upgrade on Powerbook or iBook, it just seems like a wiser purchase. But the waiting is starting to get to me.

I agree I'm holding out. The ibook is going to by my secondary machine (G5 tower at home). So I don't need anything more than a well specced Ibook.

BTW Check out the specs on the Lightscribe, discs can be expensive and the 'printing' can take up to 30mins to print and mono only.
As opposed to a cheap printable CDR and full colour printing on a cheap printer in 2 mins?

Look where the apple stand is at NECC

http://center.uoregon.edu/ISTE/NECC...lan/floorplan.php?planid=6061887&initial=true

Right infront of the main entrance.

If they're going to announce anything soon it's going to be here.
"The all new ibook"

Don't you think Apple will have a bit of a hard sell if they don't??
"Come and buy a new ibook, its almost a year old, and we're replacing them next year with intel chips"?

As opposed to:
"Here's the new ibook, more memory, bigger HD and a more video memory"

Hmmm

The Lightscribe isn't one of the big selling points for me. It's just for a little extra, I can get a Lacie Lightscribe burner. So I thought.... why not!!

if apple doesnt release an updated or new ibook by NECC, then im going Alienware...i cant wait any more...plus they will be switching chips in a year or so..

NECC

I'm slightly amused at the size of the Microsoft stand - almost next to apple's
- half the size and backing onto Dells!!! So much for their current education adverts.

At least Apple put their money where their mouth is.

I'll buy a small compaq cos i needed something small which was low in cost, Apple have lost my money which is unfortunate

There's nothing wrong with the current 12" ibook
I just can't bring myself to buy a new machine that could be superceded in a few weeks.

I can understand the frustration in waiting though!!!
Come on apple. Next week or bust. :)

well for 20 quid more i get something which is faster, nicer screen and a widescreen format, now people will say that i have to live with the fact that i have windows but i have many computers with windows and i dont have a problem, i will get a mac mini for xmas i think

what are the odds?

i am really banking on this new ibook coming around on tuesday. i am recieving a computer for college grad. and have been really working on getting a new ibook (which excites me a little more than it probably should). I am still having a little trouble justifying the price because my parents (the purchasers of this college graduation present) would have no need for a machine that powerful and probably can not fathom a life where using a computer is easy and user friendly.

A N Y W A Y.......... what do you think the odds are of this machine being released tuesday. 60%?
is that even how you show odds? idk.

I read in an earlier post that current iBooks aren't fully compatible with Tiger... Is this something to do with the ripple effect on widgets? I don't really know what the ripple effect is, or why an iB may not be able to cope with it, so if someone could explain... I should be taking delivery of mine today :D

Yep, the ripple effect is missing from the ibooks when utilizing tiger. This is basically when you drag and drop a new widget into dashboard it makes a ripple effect like you dropped something into water. Nothing too important really... but still a better video card for the ibook may mean a higher resolution which is always good...

The iBook is fully compatible with Core Image (a new technology in Tiger), however it cannot use the its graphics card to render the Core Image effects, instead it has to use the slower CPU. Since Apple figured you'd be better off seeing your widget deployed instantly instead of waiting for a laggy, slow-ass ripple effect, they switched this effect off.

Ummm...yeah, if they changed the screen simultaneously. And FYI 1024x768 needs a framebuffer of roughly 3MB while 1280x1024 needs 5MB.

ahh... thanks guys. I'm sure I'll be too busy playing with my new widgets to notice how they load up :)

What kind of v.card upgrade would you need to get the ripple going?
