ahh... thanks guys. I'm sure I'll be too busy playing with my new widgets to notice how they load up :)

What kind of v.card upgrade would you need to get the ripple going?

Due to the way Apple designed it, you would need a PS2.0/DirectX9 compatible card. However, it is impossible to change the graphics card of an iBooks, since it's built into the motherboard.

Noooooo!!! Don't say that! End of the month. End of the month. It must be!

Plus if Apple didn't plan to update till September then they would have updated the iBook page on their website with Tiger info. Plus the VRAM issue and Tiger is also valid. So, end of the month. Be positive!

The ibook page on the website has been updated to say 'Every iBook comes with Mac OS X Tiger'...

The iBook is fully compatible with Core Image (a new technology in Tiger), Since Apple figured you'd be better off seeing your widget deployed instantly instead of waiting for a laggy, slow-ass ripple effect, they switched this effect off.

Wait a minute,..."fully compatible" ? If Apple have switched off certain aspects of the OS because the hardware can't cope with it......... that sounds very much like it's not fully compatible to me lol.

To make an analogy:
The GeForceFX line is fully compatible with PS2, yet when you run HL2 it switches some of the shaders to PS1.3 for performance reasons, even though the FX line is FULLY COMPATIBLE with PS2.

As for the rumour, it makes reasonable sense if it comes as late as September, since at that point the entire PowerBook line can be pushed up to use the Mobility R9700.

I think that the timing from that rumour makes no sense. It is a rather paltry update so wouldn't make the keynote and will happen sooner in my opinion. If there was to be a form factor change then that would make it keynote worthy, but not a tiny increase in VRAM and HD.

I think a 4x increase in graphics power would be pretty note-worthy.

Wait a minute. Can an iBook run all features of Tiger? Yes or no? We're not talking theories here. Yes or no?

The answer is no so then it is not FULLY COMPATIBLE.

Infact, unless you buy all the accessories in the word, no computer is fully compatible with anything.
Any graphics card with 128MB memory is not "fully compatible" with Far Cry, since it can´t run 2048x1536 at 8xAA (the game won´t even start).

EDIT: If we go by our line, most Macs are not fully compatible with Tiger at all, since they can´t even use basic, important features (compared to some useless eye-candy effect), like 64-bit adressing and multithreading.

Oh, come on Apple.

I'm getting fed up with waiting for the new iBooks now.

If the current price of the iBook range was dropped then i'd really consider buying a current model now (12" with upgraded HDD capacity - memory upgrade from Crucial).

I don't want to pay over the odds for aged technology (£699 GBP I think is too much for what you get as standard) - but with a sensible price drop then I think I'd settle with and be happy with a current model - Apple would then probably clear down stock quicker, in time for introducing the new line of iBooks.

Or you could just pay the £100 (or whatever) more, get one right now and forget about it. What does £100 matter when you know that it´s the machine you want?

Indeed, whats even more silly is the amount Apple US has in their refurb section, and at $799, silly prices!!

I'd consider a refurbished iBook, but the online (UK) refurb store is only open for a day (every Wednesday at 10:00 BST) and whenever I've looked they've never had any refurbed iBooks on there. I don't know how much the refurb models would be as I've never seen one on there.

Applestore UK refurb section is open EVERY DAY until saturday
- and has been for about a week.

Not that there's been any ibooks on there - unlike the us site! :(

Agreed. The money isn't so much of an issue. It just makes no sense paying that amount of money for an OLD iBook. And they are old. 256MB is not enough these days and 30GB is laughable. And when bringing them to more reasonable specs with BTO it's almost Powerbook prices.

But it's at the end of its cycle. So we keep being told. But it can't be long now. If you don't need it tomorrow then wait with the rest of us. We've waited this long.... what's a few more weeks (or hopefully 5 days!)?

True, but if someone is sure that this is the computer they want, they might value a couple of weeks (or months) more with it enough to pay up for the upgrades.

Sisko, your analogy is plain wrong. The GeForceFX would be like the graphics card in the iBook, the PS2 would be like the iBook, and HL2 would be like Tiger. So the line that "The FX is FULLY COMPATIBLE" is true, but what he was saying, is that tiger, or HL2, is not campatible with the graphics card, or FX, because it can not handle all of the features. So basically, you compared the wrong things.

Just got an Applestore email offering 35 pounds off any purchase over 349. Offer expires? 30th July. No updates till August?

Ummm..no. I'm saying that the FX is fully compatible with PS2, yet HL2 CHOOSES not to exploit this, instead it uses PS1.3 in places where the developers think that people won't notice it/care more about decent performance.
The same thing applies to Tiger, the iBooks is fully compatible with Core Image, but Apple has opted to switch it off in certain (one) situations, because they think that's what people prefer.

And as I said, it is ridiculous that people think that this useless feature ("the ripple") is the pinnacle of Tiger's features. I don't hear anyone complaining that "Oh, my PowerBook isn't fully compatible with Tiger, because it can't do that 64-bit adressing thingy", yet that is a far more valuable feature than some lame-ass graphical effect that was switched off for performance reasons.

I've been following this thread for the longest time, and I'm getting so frustrated waiting for this elusive update! I feel like an idiot! I am losing faith, you guys...
but I guess there's always next Tuesday to look forward to. (and the Tuesday after next, and so on...)

I just got sick of waiting and bought a 12" PB. Don't worry everyone, this means the update has to be on this Tuesday, you're all welcome.

same here... im not in much hurry, i could wait for weeks and even months but... it's really getting annoying.
