What exactly is special about this ripple effect?

If you haven't yet seen it on a mac then take a look at the quicktime movie here: http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/theater/dashboard.html

When you drag a widget from the widget bar onto the dashboard area you get a special effect similar to a ripple in water. That is the ONLY time you see it. Yes it's very pretty the first time you see it but believe me the novelty soon wears off. If you buy a current iBook you won't see this effect. That is all. Is anyone really going to sit there and keep adding & removing widgets all day long?!!!

And for those people who say, who cares if it can't do something simple like the ripple effect? Not like you're going to do add and remove widgets all day. If the current iBook can't do something that SIMPLE when I drop my hard earned dough TODAY, then it really worries me about its future, in other words, BAD INVESTMENT!!!

I'll wait (well maybe)

I'll wait to see if they are updated by July 7th, but that's about my limit.
I'm not paying for it, it's a graduation present, and I can't expect them to shell out for a Pbook. I already have a Dell xps, so I don't need another Wintel box. I will am still going to buy an ibook, even if they aren't updated, so I'm with you most of the way.

Well, hopefully they'll be updated next Tuesday or Thursday...

Ibook or Powerbook.. To be or not to be... LOL

Ok... after a long night of trying to figure out just how I would be able to force myself to wait until september (possibly) I started contemplating the idea of getting a powerbook now and just saving time and energy. I love the colour and material of the ibook... but the powebook simply seems to come with a whole lot more stuff (100GB drive and superdrive... for like $300 more once I would be finished upgrading the ibook). Here's my dilemma... I have the money for either... so, should I buy the powerbook if the new ibook is not released on the 7th (my deadline  ). or just wait until infinity...?? I would love some feedback...

Thanks guys... y'all rock! :p

I just noticed that on the Apple hardware site, there are no advertisements for either laptop lines. So it doesn't say "The New PowerBooks" anymore. Also, in the Buyer's Guide of this site, the section for the PowerBooks no longer says "Neutral - Mid product cycle"; it says "Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle". Updates coming for both laptop lines? I hope so!

It would be great for the PB to be updated during Cram and Jam. Just makes it even more enticing.

I am very new to these forums as I haven't even purchased my first Mac yet. (Waiting for the Ibook like every other person on here.) Though I don't know much, it seems like the sales of the ibook must virtually be at a standstill right now compared to years past. Without recent updates and the promise of intel based macs in a year, the sale figures have to be way waaaaaaaaay down, even with the back to school season coming soon. I for one think this would be enough to atleast warrant a price drop if not a minor refresh. Anyone else feel the same way?

That sentiment is shared by myself and numerous others. However, playing the "New iBooks next Tuesday -- it's just gotta be NEXT Tuesday" game has evolved into a wearisome exercise.

I'll continue waiting for obvious reasons: 1. patience is a strong suit of mine ... 2. I completed school decades ago and, therefore, not in dire need of a new Mac within the next several weeks and ... 3. curiousity makes me want to see when the powers-that-be at Apple decide it's time to ensure that products displayed in their stores are properly equipped to showcase all features of the latest OS they developed.

I am/was in exactly the same boat. And I chose to order the Powerbook. I didn't want to buy the iBook because it is looking a little tired and as finalcoolman said re: ripple effect, it is a gimmick but an indication of its limitations. So, I decided Powerbook. I need the machine so it's on order.

And since placing the order I'm just getting excited. I haven't had any "have I done the right thing?" feelings. Which I think is an indication that it was the right move for me.

Do you need to get the iBook before you go to school? You said you've got a dell that works so why don't you just try to use that until the iBook gets the updates. Even if you end up having to wait until September or so, i'm sure you will be much more pleased. I've just graduated so i'm not in dire need of a new computer. My dell still works alright so i'm just going to stick it out until the updates.

What a joke. The FX5200 is barely faster than a R9200, and in fact, on your "unlimited" PB, the CPU is the default renderer of Core Image effects. So basically, all you get is the ripple effect, other effects are rendered on the CPU, just like the iBook.

Frankly, I don't care if my iBook is limited in its ability to display useless gimicks. There are a lot of more important areas it's limited in. Like the fact that it's single core. I'd take a dual-core PB with a R9200 over a single-core with a 6800U ANY DAY.
My point: You're all claiming that the lack of an ability to display a useless effect is an indication on the iBooks limits. Maybe, but a limited ability to showcase fancy gickmicks doesn't upset me much.

Thanks for Replying...

Well I guess I am not desperate for a computer before September. The only serious problem my current computer has is that it overheats sometimes. However, I thought it would be better to get the ibook over the summer so I could learn all the tricks of Tiger before I start school. This would be my first mac laptop so I don't really know how to use a lot of the features. By September I will have 4 courses on top of me and it will be much more difficult to be able to devote time to getting accustomed to it... but I guess you are right... I would probably be more satsified with a new ibook overall. So... who knows... hopefully I will be able to wait :p

Thanx

In my experience the best way to get to know how to use a piece of software is to HAVE to use it. I've never really been able to learn a new application until I actually HAD to. But maybe that's just me.

Hmm, so true. Well, if Apple would just release an update (or if/when I give in and get a current iBook or go for a ThinkPad; actually, I think even if I went with either of these, I'd still keep checking to see when the update came out, just to see what I missed out on), I'd stop looking up this thread every day to see if there is ANY news of a 'new' iBook :)

Perhaps a renamed thread is in order: "ANALysis of classic iBookphile behavior ... why they do what they do."

Needing a Laptop "for school" is really a silly justification. I have heard it sooo many times. I have attended 3 universities now, and finish my degree in May, I have never seen anyone that "needed" a laptop to have with them. If you are in a law school that requires a notebook, ok, go do it, but the ones I know of require a Wintel machine. If the school requires computer work, then they provide computers (all three of mine have) and while I have had a 12" powerbook to carry around, it is very annoying to other students to "type notes" and many teachers despise seeing students hiding behind a laptop, and many will ask you to put them away. So don't spend $1200 on a laptop that you just aren't going to do the things you envision anyway. When my powerbook was new it got about 3 hours of batt. life, that is half a day of school for me... so I needed my charger sometimes too...

And where exactly did I say the Powerbook was "unlimited"? You should try and post constructive comments instead of always going with the loaded statements.

I am getting the Powerbook not for the ripple, but because it's better than the iBook in most areas (as I've justified in previous posts).

Point remains, the iBook is an 8+ month old machine. It needs to be updated. And if you're happy with your iBook, that's great but people buying them now don't want an old machine. They'd rather wait. What's so wrong with that?!?! And for those who wants the ripple effect and the ripple alone... what's wrong with that? It's their money, not yours. It's their machine, not yours. If you don't agree, that's fine but try and lose the superiority tone, it doesn't come across too well.

The fact that you bought it after repeatadly expressing your frustration with the iBooks inability to render Core Image effects on the graphics card suggest that you think the PB is better off. Well, it's not.

I'm sorry, but I got the impression that you got it to get Core Image support on the graphics card. However, if you got it for its more elegant encasing, faster HD, faster CPU and its screen spanning abilities, then I wholly agree with you.

There's nothing saying that it MUST be updated. Computer hardware advances in leaps, not constantly. There have been 8 month periods where nothing has happened on other hardware.
Note, I'm not saying that the iBook shouldn´t be upgraded, I´m saying its a poor argument to say it must be upgraded simply because some time hase gone by.

I think the base ram should be upped to 512mb and the 30GB HD replaced with the 60GB, 5200RPM drive. I also think they should dump the prices about $200. Any other upgrade is not really necessary at this time for an entry level, consumer laptop. A FSB upgrade would be nice as well.

And for those who wants the ripple effect and the ripple alone... what's wrong with that? It's their money, not yours. It's their machine, not yours.
Well, for one thing, they're throwing their money away on a useless ripple intstead of throwing their money away on an overpriced iBook. ;)

Sorry, I blame it on my iBook! It just make me feel so...superior:D

Okay, fair enough. My frustration with the lack of iBook upgrades was that the graphics is one of the areas you can't upgrade yourself. And 32MB of VRAM isn't sufficient anymore. Well, for me anyway.

God no! If all I wanted was the ripple then I would drop a stone in a bowl of water everytime I opened dashboard. I went for the Powerbook because after my planned BTO upgrades on the iBook, there was about a AU$300 difference between the iBook and Powerbook. And with all the other perks of the Powerbook, I decided to go for that instead. And am glad I have. I just want it to arrive now!

I agree that 32MB (and even 64MB) is not enough for more than basic graphics work (or games). For example, while Jedi Academy runs perfectly well on my iBook, I can't use the "High" texture settings without getting severe frame-rate drop. However, since I don't use my iBook for graphics work or games, 32MB is enough for me. Otherwise I too, probably would have gotten the PB. Not a PC though, since getting OS X was the reason I got a Mac.

I agree that the current configurations are overpriced. But since the stock iBook was enough for my needs (yes, even the 30GB harddrive, after 5 weeks of use, I still have 18GB free!), the price-difference with the PowerBook was too much.
