Hmmm

Although I'm dissappointed with no new ibooks - yet -
You could also predict that there now must be something MUCH BIGGER than a colour ipod for the apple announcement in the next week (July 7th).

What I heard is that the big news will be a Sony-Apple announcement of an iTunes VideoStore.

And that would be really big news.

In September there is the Paris Expo. I am not sure when it starts. But I guess the keynote is a day after the rebate stuff ends.

My guess is new iBooks and PBs at Paris Expo.

The Expo was shifted this year to September on request by Apple.

Im pretty sure they will update the ibook soon, i mean if they decided not to update the ibook, the sensible move by apple would be to inform the customers, otherwise their sales would dramatically drop either from waiting for the new ibook or buying a different notebook product such as dell (as so many of us have contemplated including me :p )..... meh just update that damn ibook apple :D :D

Maybe they're hoping offereing a free iPod to students is enough to conteract this.

Given up waiting for an update, The "Halo" effect from buying my ipod has worn off.

I've put up with Windows for this long, no reason why it can't be longer. Back to looking for a decent spec laptop for £1000.

Shame really. :(

Thanks to the people who replied to my questions and it's been really interesting reading all the other posts.

I'm starting to loose interest too...

Apart from the recent iMac, which is out of my price range, all of Apples hardware updates have been pretty poor lately - the eMac should of had a G5 in it - if it had i'd probably have gone for one (still can't believe that update was 13 monts coming  ). And when the next iBook comes, i'm sure it will be just as uninspiring. :(

We're just gonna have to face facts- They're not gonna be updated for a while...
I'd say that Apple would be most likely to update the iBooks around the time the Apple ads come out, but I'd be suprised if they came out before then... The delivery times havn't increased, although it'd be interesting if they released the new iPods without the delivery times changing...

On another note, would the Mini's 1.42ghz processor work in an iBook? If so, this is the next logical step IMO...

And yet still, I feel for you poor S.O.B's. I say join me! Do what I did! I got tired of waiting for an iBook so I bought a 12" powerbook and couldnt be happier!

So does the Cram and Jam promo cement the notion of no new iBook till October?

I do hope this iBook is worth waiting for... perhaps a Tablet iBook which is of widescreen size

Please?

No thanks, I'd rather use an eMate. A mundane speed bump and increase in screen resolution is fine by me.

Oh, OSX isn't really that important. I just wanted to have a budget laptop to run some music software on it, and Garageband2 still appeals to me above everything else. Then I do writing, listen music and play videos. After re-comping kernel every linux gets hell of a faster than OSX ever could, and that's actually fairly easy trick.

Now I just need some capable music software on my linux-laptop...

EDIT: oh yeah, this baby doesn't need any fricking screen spanning doctor to ruin warranty and piss off Apple for improving software.

You don't sound like you know what you're doing.

You will never get Garageband 2 for Windows or Linux. Never.
Good luck finding "music software" for Linux. PM me if you find anything worth using; I haven't found anything good yet.
I hope you know what you're doing when you try screen spanning under X. It's seriously hard, it can fry stuff, and remember, nothing is less fun than trying to fix a broken X config.

This is why I'm waiting for a new iBook. There are things that Linux just can't do reliably yet, and I'm also still riding the learning curve. I'm sure that eventually my Mac will become secondary to my Linux machine, but Linux and I aren't ready for that kind of a commitment yet.

I don't mean to sound like a prophet of doom. As a Linux user I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, it is a truly rewarding experience.

Oh look... we're on the twentieth page of this thread already.

There was an interview with the guy who was making them on here earlier, so they should be in the production / post-production stage by now. Although I don't know when they'll air, and it's most likely they'd air in the US first...

Oh, and buy an iBook now. I did, and I'm chuffed with it :D Just be prepared to upgrade the RAM...

My local PC world has a couple of PBooks and iBooks. What is the easiest thing to do on them in store to compare the 32 and 64 MB gfx card? (They aren't connected to the internet and don't have Tiger.)

Perhaps, but that still doesn't help people like me from Canada (or the other reader's from the UK and, no doubt, other locations outside the US).

EDIT: Okay, it just took a little longer. Student Union is now available in Canada: http://www.apple.com/ca/education/backtoschool/ Good in that it is a nice promo., bad in that it makes it even less likely we'll see an update for the 'back to school' season. END EDIT.

*sighs* I originally considered getting an iBook (as my switch machine) sometime in April but read that it was likely to get an update ‘soon’ so held off; we’re at the end of June now and I still don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel (especially with a September update being mooted now).

Dunno, I’ll hold out for a little while longer, but unless a) Apple releases a new iBook or b) offers some new promotion to students in Canada soon, I think I may just go with my original plan and get a ThinkPad.

somehow i don't think you'll get that for £699 !!

Hey, this is Apple! It'd be totally rad if they brought tablets to iBook prices, especially since Bill Gates is on a warpath to make Tablet PCs the future notebook. It would mean Apple would be quickly thrown into the forefront of Tablet Technology and people would buy "cool" tablets just as they bought "cool" iPods.

PC world's machines tnd to be fairly old, so be mindful of this if you're considering a purchase... Otherwise, take a video cd or DVD along to the shop and see how each machine handles it...

I would ALMOST bet on new iBooks next week. It was being said that they would update the iPods and introduce iTunes 4.9 at the press event on (or before) Thursday next week. Rumor sites were also saying to expect at least one updated Mac product. Well, since we got the first two out of the way, I think we'll get the updated Mac product. And what Mac product has a better chance of being updated than any other? The iBook. I think it's also possible that Apple will update the iBook earlier in the week (most likely Tuesday), and release the iTunes phone (iPhone?) at the press event. Well, here's hoping!

I know exactly what I'm doing. I'm already used to linux (since 2001) and know exactly what kind of software I need to and where to find it from (as for linux, sourceforge.org is the place). Currently I'm testing Audacity and Glame, leaning towards the latter. More advanced, but pain in the ass to learn the ropes.
"Glame is targeted to be the GIMP for audio processing. Glame supports non destructive multitrack editing, recording and mixing; realtime effects using native or LADSPA plugins; OSS, ALSA or SGI audio and WAV, Mp3 and Ogg file formats."

As for screen spanning under linux.. what possibly could be easier? I see no problem at all. Latest distros support it automatically, just check display properties.

OMG, I'm beginning to seem like a troll. But I still want that bloody Garageband some day, so I'll just hang on here. Maybe when the 2nd generation Intel iMac has arrived? :p

OMG I am DEsPeraTe!!!

I honestly can't wait much longer!! I am not a patient person to begin with... but this lack of updates is definitely pushing my boundaries. If apple doesn't update the ibooks on july 7th I will just have to go ahead and buy the current model. I wanted to ask you guys something... are the updates only either happening on the 7th or September... or could there be any chance that if they are not update next tuesday they could still be updated before september?? (I certainly CANNOT wait until september... but I might be able to stop breathing and wait until mid august :D !!)

Thanks for the input

Cheers

I agree (with pessimistic reservations). The only thing left to announce would be the new Motorola, otherwise, and that hardly counts as a Mac product update, does it? Although it doesn't make any sense to update the IBook so shortly after announcing Cram & Jam, it makes no less sense than announcing the new Ipods after the fact either...

Thats the exact same thing that I had said when WWDC was about to come around, and as we all know, Apple did not update the iBook line. So I went out and bought myself a nice new 12" iBook. I must say I love it. It's my first Mac, so it's taking some time to get used to it, but it's fun. I'd suggest doing that, if by July 7th, no changes, go grab yourself a new iBook, but be sure to get atleast 512MBs of RAM, I'll be looking to upgrade soon. Also, a larger hard drive (over the 30GBs) would be great. I may eventually look into throwing in a nice 100GB drive (if possible) but 30GBs just isn't enough for my iTunes library.

All in all, I'm a happy Mac owner.

well if you just want to looks at the gfx procsser download xbench onto them, and see what the differnt graphics test scores are for each computer.

This is such a joke. You'd think the IBooks would have been updated by now. What's with such the long wait? Steve, wake up!

All of you waiting new iBooks, go look at the iBook site on Apple. Its changed. It reflects Tiger and all the changes in it. Apple wouldn't do that if they were planning an update. And all the rumors are pointing to either the iPod phone, or a Mac mini update.

I think if your going to get an iBook, just get it. There will NO UPDATES, no matter how many times you post in this thread :p I'm sry to say, its time to give it up. You all have 3 choices at this point: get an iBook (a great machine), get a PowerBook (also a great machine, or if you just really want to be able to see the water drop effect in Dashboard, which gets old fast), or sit there and enjoy whatever you're using (even if you have to force yourself to enjoy Windows :p ). I don't like to be pessimistic, but its time to give it up. Like I said before, we are beating a dead horse that just needs to be buried.

If I was a moderator, at this point, I would close this thread.
