I am depressed. I was lookin forward to my first mac. doh! :(
amen....i too am making the switch. i can almost taste it but i dont want a 12 inch pb..... i want a NEW iBOOK!!!! apple are you listening?!?

i'd give it at least another week before giving up hope on updated ibooks before school starts
then of course, if there's no updated ibooks in 2 weeks time-it comes to the big decision to get an ibook or perhaps spring for a powerbook 12"

All of you waiting new iBooks, go look at the iBook site on Apple. Its changed. It reflects Tiger and all the changes in it. Apple wouldn't do that if they were planning an update. And all the rumors are pointing to either the iPod phone, or a Mac mini update.

I think if your going to get an iBook, just get it. There will NO UPDATES, no matter how many times you post in this thread :p I'm sry to say, its time to give it up. You all have 3 choices at this point: get an iBook (a great machine), get a PowerBook (also a great machine, or if you just really want to be able to see the water drop effect in Dashboard, which gets old fast), or sit there and enjoy whatever you're using (even if you have to force yourself to enjoy Windows :p ). I don't like to be pessimistic, but its time to give it up. Like I said before, we are beating a dead horse that just needs to be buried.

If I was a moderator, at this point, I would close this thread.

HAHAHA NO

buy one now. they are fine :D

no offense but it sounds like a lot of you guys that are pushing us to buy ibooks now are like working for apple or something. it doesn't make sense to buy a product that is obsolete or in 2 weeks 200 dollars cheaper.

how about this...

apple suprises everyone with mactel portables july 7th (or whenever they told the press to be ready for a new product release). Would explain the lack of updates, and answer the question about what apple was planning on selling for the next year...

Hey...they had OS X running on x86 for 5 years...you never know.

And yet still, I feel for you poor S.O.B's. I say join me! Do what I did! I got tired of waiting for an iBook so I bought a 12" powerbook and couldnt be happier!

Amen to that.
Or go buy an ugly cheap piece of ***** PC and see how long it takes you to regret that decision.

That's exactly what I've done. And since ordering, not once have I thought "have I made the right decision?", I know I have. Now I just have to wait for it to arrive.

And what Mac product has a better chance of being updated than any other? The iBook.

The mac to be updated is the mac mini.
why?
1. haven't you seen the rumours on thinksecret?
2. they are excluded from the student discount...

I wish people would stop telling others waiting for an iBook to just go and buy Powerbook instead, probably the biggest reason they are choosing the iBook is price. There is a massive difference in price between the iBook and Powerbook - which many, myself included can't afford.

Apart from the infamous "ripple effect" is there anything that the iBooks are unable to do in tiger? For example, Mac Mini's can't play h.264 high definition video, whilst other macs can. Just wondering.

I, like many others have been waiting patiently for the update. Hopefully there will be good news next week. But even if there is not an update next week i will STILL wait because of pure principle. I will not let my first mac be an outdated computer. Especially when it doesn't even have the right specs for Tiger. I may be unhappy now with my dell but i know that if i were to buy the current iBook i would be even more unhappy when the new iBooks come out. I think if it were a minor update then it would've come out by now, but since it has been so long it's gotta be for a major change like the widescreens. The powerbooks may be nice but i'd rather not spend that much so i will wait. Who's with me?

.

YUP.
This whole press release thing on July 7th will be completely focused on the new phone, the relationship with Cingular (or whoever), and being able to dl music to your phone. That is it. Apple will not announce an upgrade to the iBook in conjunction with this. It would just confuse the message.

BTW. Steve Jobs does no read these threads.

next time someone starts another new iBooks next tuesday they schould put as title: next iBooks SOME tuesday :p

I am going to wait as well, there is nothing wrong with wanting a recently updated computer.

Exactly. I've jumped ship to the Powerbook line but that's only because:
a) I need a laptop now
b) I recently got some money to allow the jump to Powerbook.

I think for anyone to get a iBook at the moment unless you NEED oe isn't a wise move. They're great machines as they are but there's no hiding that they're 8 months old.

totally true - another argument why there won't be new ibooks till sept..

I can't believe how many people want others to go and buy an iBook/PowerBook now. I for one am definitely not buying a machine that's over 8 months old. What's the point of waiting this long if we don't get anything out of it? We could have had iBooks all this time, but we waited for something new. I want to have a reason for waiting this long. It's because I knew something was on its way. And it is. I personally think the new iBooks are coming in the next week or two, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Now who's with me?!

Guaranteed not to happen. There is no software out there for x86 yet.

I don't care how long it takes 'til they're upgraded. I'm not switching until they are.

I'm with you! I am waiting and will continue to wait.

I'm buying a new iBook 12"...

... on Wednesday 20th, in just under three weeks. It'll be my first Mac, a replacement for an old Latitude running Linux (which would still be just fine if the keyboard wasn't failing and one of the memory slots hadn't failed and...).

If Apple update the range before then (next Tuesday/Thursday, or at MacWorld Boston), then fine, I'll get one asap.

But if not, that's the date I've set myself, and I'm not waiting any longer. I've been following this thread (and doing my research) for only a few weeks now, but that's long enough for me.

What's the worst that can happen? Apple drop the whole iBook range the following week? Halve the cost and add a G5? I'd still have the same laptop for the price I was prepared to pay. Also, it's not like all the software is going to magically stop working, even if they do drop the specific 1.2GHz model I'm going to get.

And: It's a whole eight months old? My Latitude is about five years old, and it's fine! Do Apple portables rust when they get old or something?

I can't believe how many people want others to go and buy an iBook/PowerBook now.
Not to pick on this quote in particular, but how about: if you need a new machine now, buy it now; if not, wait?

Oh, and since this is my first post: "Hi".

That is my quote and I totally agree with your response. I just don't think people should be telling others to "buy now, it won't be updated until September" because they have absolutely no way of knowing that. But it doesn't matter to me because I'll wait as long as it takes.
