I agree that the current configurations are overpriced. But since the stock iBook was enough for my needs (yes, even the 30GB harddrive, after 5 weeks of use, I still have 18GB free!), the price-difference with the PowerBook was too much.

And that's the thing. It all comes down to what people need the machine for. I'll be doing Final Cut Express, Flash MX 2004 and DVDSP as well as all the other internet things. And seeing as it will soon be my primary machine, I wanted a faster and big hard drive, lots of RAM, external DVD burner, and everything else I could handle. So when I did the figures, the Powerbook Superdrive wasn't going to be a great deal more than a maxed out 12" iBook. Unfortunately, it's just taking forever to be built! Grrrr.

help needed ....
What shud i do
1. Keep waiting for the Tuesday....ibook release?
2. buy existing 12' ibook($1000) or
3. Get brand new old ver PB 15" 1.33 ($1600) a reseller has it on discount now..excess stock i think.

I would not get the 14" at this point considering the PB on offer cost almost the same. The ibook 12" is looking attractive cuz it is the lowest priced of the portable mac's but having said that the ibook line is physically(screen not wide, poor rez, compared to the PC laptops) not a good by only logically(OS)

i thot i would wait till end july for a mac believing there would be an update on the ibooks but it may appear with the cram n jam n other promos...i am beginning to suspect that updates may appear after end Sept.

Qn is shud i wait ...or get the PB or Ibook as above.Pls advise.Cheers

This is why the iBook line needs a major overhaul!

Is it me or is the current 14" iBook U-G-L-Y? All of that wasted blah space around the keyboard toward the display, with those wimpy speakers? And a marginal display too.

Things need to change, and hopefully the delay in new iBooks represents the fact that it's going to be a major redesign that addresses all of the above points.

well - from the marketing point of view i think a redesign will be done with the first intel books..

Maybe they'll redesign the iBook for the Intels, but until the Intels come out... they're just going to use PPC in the new redesign.

Just a thought.

I WANT to have an iBook for school. Now, I do not NEED it, it's just because I want one and because my dad offered to buy me one, and I want to impress everyone in my new school. (I'm 14, going into high school.) And my question is, do you think that the iBooks will be updated before September? If they are not updated by then, I will still DEFINETLY buy one. (I know, I'm spoiled.) But, of course it will be a lot nicer to have an updated one.

Thanks,
Joe

No-one knows for sure, but I don't think so. And if you're spoiled, get a maxed-out one now, then there won't be much difference even if it is updated. Or better yet, get a PowerBook!

Having waited since about Feb for this update, I think I will set myself a deadline of july 7th and buy the 12" iBook after that.

Apart from the ripple effect, are there any other things where you would notice the 32MB graphics card as noticably harming performance. I will not be doing video editing or anything like that, but will be using all the MS Office apps, (are the transformations between slides harmed?) some iPhoto and maybe a couple of games, (but not FPS style - these are the most gfx intensive aren't they?)

Also, how much would the current 12" iBook sell for in 2 or 3 years? (in pounds.) I will be upgrading the HD and RAM to 80GB and 1.25GB (from Crucial,) as well as putting in BT.

Well, the lack of a ripple effect actually helps performance

You probably won't notice a difference. The only place I notice it is when I have more than 10-15 windows open and use Exposé. Then the animation starts dropping frames. It's still as fast as before, but doesn't look as good.

Dunno. Check what an 3 year old iBook sells for now to get an idea. Probably it'll sell for even less, because in 3 years all Apple products will be Intel-based. I'll probably give my iBook to my little brother instead of selling it. Feel like such a shame to sell it cheap.

Dude, if you think a laptop is going to make you look cool especially in high school, you're in for a treat for the next 4 years. if you're that rich guy at school that buys all the coolest gadgets to be trendy or whatever, you're gonna be scoffed at a lot. But that's assuming if you go to a normal high school (none of that pre-ivy league bull crap)

Well, it's a high school that you need to get accepted into, so it's not like just anyone is in it. But you know I'm not gona be like "Oooo everybody look at my cool iBook!" No. I'm not like that AT ALL. I just think it will be cool to have. The way I typed it is not really the way I mean it. I am not buying an iBook to be in the "cool crowd" or as a very SAD attempt to make friends. I don't think it will make me look cool either. Sorry if I mislead anyone. I just mean that it's a cool and fairly impressive laptop.

OK, back to the iBooks. Does anyone here have any like inside info or something, or maybe just a good tip at when the iBooks will be updated??

Thanks,
Joe :)

From a marketing point of view, it would actually be quite a good idea to redesign the form factor in order to freshen up the product range so that people who are considering waiting for the Intel product might think twice.

It's just occurred to me that the nature and timing of the next iBook may be indicative of when we can expect the first Intel iBooks. If we get a very minor update in the next two months, then I would expect the Intel iBooks to be relased around June of next year. If, on the other hand, the next update occurs in September or later and features a new form factor, then we might be waiting until later next year for the Intel iBooks.

That's true. I think I'm going to set a deadline to see what next thursday's announcement is tho, and jut get one regardless. Besides, the new design may be horrid.

I've already bought my iBook so I'm happy, but already I hope it had a bit more power... If new iBook's came out with similar power to the PB's but the same iBook battery life then I'd be happy, but sadly I don't think technology (in my price range) will go that far...

People are talking about form factor changes, so what do you think Apple will do next? By looking at the trends, Apples should get more minimalist, but how can you get more minimalist than the plain white box that is the iBook? :) All I can see is them moving the Apple from the middle of the screenback to the right, like the side of the San Francisco store...

I really want to customise my iBook so the Apple glows green... Does anyone know how I could do this?

From http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?t=7915

I have noticed that the PB 17" are out of stock at two stores here and new ones are expected July 11...at both stores same day.

The iBook is also out of stock at them and new ones are expected July 7...also at both stores same day.

I hope it is the long awaited updates...but I wouldn't bet on it.

I'm pretty confident that the ibooks will be one of the first products to switch to intel. (the whole switch is primary cause of the portables and low end machines)
there will be a lot of marketing and rebranding for the product and a redesign would fit perfectly into the concept..

So, is this the big week? are we one of the product update(s) that gets announced on thursday? what do you all think?

I sure hope so. If not then, at leat before September. Come on Apple!! Hit the back-to-school crowd with new iBooks!

Some rumors sites say that Apple will be releasing AT LEAST ONE updated Macintosh computer on Thursday. So, it's looking good for us!! The iBook has been waiting the longest for an update out of all the Apple products.

I'm 90% sure that they will be updated on Thursday. ;) :D

But I guess there is awlays that 10% hanging around. :(

Well, i'm hoping for an iBook-Update since April now, but i don't think it's the iBooks being updated first... i would bet for a MacMini Update... well, at least 10 Euro :D

Like everyone else I've been waiting for an iBook update. Seems like forever. Next week, next week, I know it will be on Tues. No, Thursday....... I'm getting a bit weary. Here's my dilema. I'm going to get a laptop for my daughter's freshman year at college. I bought a 14" iBook for my wife and she loves it (BTW, 1.6 G5 here at home everthing running Panther. Yeah, wanted Tiger but Father's Day came and went :( ). I know that Amazon is running a rebate with the final price of a 14" combo drive about $1150. I also see that Apple has a deal for the edu that offers a "free" iPod Mini with purchase. I haven't done the exact comparison but they should be pretty close: both free shipping but with Apple I'd be paying sales tax But would be getting a iPod Mini (well, my daugter would be getting the Mini). Hmmmmm. I know that everyone likes the 12" iBook and the 12" PBs. Price of a 12" PB (combo drive with bigger hard drive) about $1399. I'm in a bit of a quandry here. Talked to my daughter about the 14 vs the 12 and she has not made a preference. Almost feel that the 12" iBook might be better for her.....portability wise but worry about the screen realestate. Don't really want to spend $1400 on the PB ( have to check to see if there are some better deals) but the 12" iBook is slower than the 14" and would have to upgrade the harddrive.

Should I look at the 12" iBook with some upgrading? Stick with the 14" iBook combo? OR should I be looking at the 12" PB. At any rate I will be waiting to buy something in about 2 wks. Still hoping for the iBook upgrade but doubting it will happen.....Amazon's rebate goes through Jul. Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers

If you go with the 12" I'd recommend an external display for her. My 15" PB was my only computer for about a year and I bought a 17" LCD because I thought writing papers on the PB was a bit of a pain. I like to be able to bring up other articles or web pages often while I'm working, and the extra screen real estate is a big plus. The other thing is that, as delivered, the iBook only mirrors to external displays as far as I know. There is a workaround for this, but I'm not familiar with it as I've never had to do it.

She's lucky either way.
