They probably don't. The 20GB tier (now 50GB) costs £0.79 per month in the UK.

To put that into perspective, a can of Coke costs £0.68 in the supermarket.

And anyone who is a bit clever picks up gift cards that are sold 15% to 25% below face value from time to time and uses them to pay.

Are these prices monthly?

Lol at 1TB for $179 in Mexico

Mexican dollars. It's US$10.81.

Well, this is weird. On the iPhone, Settings > iCloud > Storage > Change Storage Plan shows that I now have 50GB. But Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage shows "iCloud Total Storage 20.0 GB". And my Macs still show only 20GB.

I bet when the next renewal date arrive it will update to 50GB. Mine already says 50GB at 0.99 cents but still shows 20GB and my renewal is every 1st of the month.

My iTunes account is loaded with credit from discounted gift cards but it still insisted that the monthly iCloud subscription would have to be paid from a credit or debit card linked to my account when I signed up.

iCloud has been taking money from my iTunes credit for over a year now. I think they just need a credit card on file as a backup.

I was on the 25Gb plan (20gb plus the free 5gb) that I've had for the last few years, paying $11.99 a year. I put a call into Apple Support and asked for clarification about when I could see the 50Gb upgrade. Their answer to me was that since it was an annual plan and they no longer have them, I could keep that plan as long as I wanted, but there would be no increase in storage. IOW, I would still have the 25Gb for the same price I could get 50Gb, just switching to paying monthly.

They processed a pro-rated refund (my annual iCloud subscription was in July) and I signed up for the 50Gb plan billed monthly at 99 cents.

I have 3 other friends who got the 50gb upgrade, but all 3 of them were on a monthly plan.

So if you have an annual iCloud plan and aren't seeing the extra space upgrade, give Apple Support a call. I followed this link, which eventually gave me the option to have them call me at a specified time.

Huzzah! After chasing one Apple rep after another, the 50GB is finally showing. And that's not bad value - better than the Microsoft "unlimited storage [not]" fiasco. Happy bunny !
