If Google can offer a lot more for much less, why can't Apple too?? They have money and resources. Come on.

Google gets something out of it. They index all of your data and use it to market to you. To Google, there's a bit benefit to getting you to give them more and more of your data. There isn't the same with Apple.

Different companies make money in different ways.

A buck a month for 50gb isn't bad. I'm coming from Android so I'm not sure how much the auto backups will take. Something I'll have to look into. I have Google photos now which is free but I want everything to be seamless . I'll be getting my iPad air 2 in the mail today so I'll be able to play around with it and get an idea of what I'm dealing with.

For my iPhone, the backup portion of iCloud takes about 3GB or so including my app data, gaming stats, iMessage (photos/videos on iMessage), and other settings.

Photos/videos in general aren't included if you use iCloud Photo Library, which will be separate from backups. My photo library takes ~50gb.

Apple's info page says, "If you purchased a monthly plan before September 16, 2015, your account was upgraded automatically." But mine hasn't. I still only have 20GB, and this is what shows in System Preferences.

I think you need to have a bit of patience and remember Apple is based in California so the necessary switches will be probably be flicked while people are at work in their time zone. Wait until later today when iOS 9 is released and then check if it's been updated.

Hooray! I'll save 50p a month now. I'll put that towards a Mars bar, or 1 and a half lemons. Might just save up four months and buy a candle from Dunelm Mill.

They're quite small. It doesn't back up apps, just settings, saves, etc. It can back up your photo library too if you don't enable iCloud. My iPad's backup is 700mb and my iPhone is 1.2gb. Plus you can disable backing up of large apps and services. I find it very useful!

The new pricing is better than the old. hopefully we will continue to see the price improve. HOWEVER, what I am still upset about is the lack of family plans. Apple gives me the ability to share the credit card, music and apps with my family, but I cannot share iCloud Drive, so I have to pay separate charges for each one. APPLE FIX THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely. When I host it, Apple can't see it. I consider that already more securely than Apple.

Like I said above, when I host it, I can dictate exactly who (or what device) is allowed to see it and blacklist everyone else. How is that not A LOT more secure than Apple hosting it?
Your basing it off of Apple seeing it, which I see your thought process. As for real security, your mediocre network equipment could easily be compromised. The difference that is on your side is why would someone target you over Apple? They likely wouldn't.

Yes, true. To your second point, security by obscurity isn't great but it does work sometimes.

As for the former, I agree my home network equipment can be compromised. Then again, I never said to run this off a crappy $75 Linksys from Best Buy. I think it's fair to say that anyone considering running their own server would and should also consider getting a proper business-class firewall, and consider purchasing other protection services. However, small or medium sized businesses that must be in charge of their own data can do a lot worse in terms of security than an OS X server for hosting mail, calendar, contacts, documents and other files, etc. Pretty much all of its functions are top notch except for the web server; which isn't all that bad either, it's just not the most efficient.

I have iOS 9 on my iPhone 6+ - when I go to upgrade my storage options - the old pricing tiers are still there. So it looks like it'll be later.

I decided on MS for my photos backup. After reading some article about how MS is more into selling the service than your person info. If I can find that Apple is better in terms of privacy as compared to MS then I'll jump on iCloud.

Tim Cook once said if the government wants the data on Apple's servers, they would, essentially, have to pry it from his cold, head hands. You don't have to look very hard to see Apple's stance on user privacy.

I looked just a few minutes ago. The new pricing is in place, but I'm still showing "Total Storage" of 20GB.

Finally! Updated to iOS 9, and it's now showing $2.99 for 200GB.

Ugly placeholder icon is still there, but at least the proper pricing has been set.

I moved all my photos and movies over to Google Photos, which is unlimited and free forever. I'm not going to pay Apple monthly for the same thing.

What makes you think that Google Photos is free forever? Forever is a very, very long time.
