Dual Screens for New Imacs?

Anybody know if the new imac supports a second monitor? Or if there is a work-a-round that can be done to accomplish this?

Thanks!

I'd be pretty sure you can hack it in software (if you don't mind messing with OS-level stuff) like you can with iBooks--and instructions/utilities for that are bound to appear online. But out of the box (well, with an adapter), you can only mirror the internal display (which means the internal display is set to a lower, non-wide screen mode, and the TV or other display shows the same thing).

Yeah Photo Booth most likely needs a core image card to do those real time effects.

Front Row Bigger News than Ipod

Apple is making the move on the living room. Front Row is the OS for the living room/living room appliance. The news media really hasn't touched on the signifigance of Front Row.

Apple has the consumers (installed ipod user base, not just us mac evangelists) on a leash and is leading them along the path to an apple intergrated home media future/device. Large display panel, Front Row interface, all the wireless connectivity, built in isight, hangs on the wall, yadda yadda yadda..... It's just going to be a while till we get there, apple has some money to make on the way selling all the iterations of products that get us there. It will be a fun ride.

They have been doing a great job captivating the consumer, they just need to maintain it. Bring people along just fast enough to keep their attention (buying and upgrading), while not letting them be distracted by flashy competing concepts, and doing all not too fast as to confuse them with the technology and losing them.

Go Apple!!!

On the other hand, a PB or PM updates were diserable too...

Amazingly gorgeous... i might settle for one instead of a powerbook... chained to a desktop again..... if i ever get a new comp... i'll have to see if any sweet powerbook updates come up...

Funny, I was in the Apple Store in Oxford Circus in London about 2 weeks ago and the eMacs were certainly still in the upstairs Kids area.

Still, good to see them go. They really were a hold over and with the Mini, they really werent necessary.

I was at an apple store last friday and the emacs were still there if i remember correctly... i'm about 90% sure they were... huh

That was my reaction as well - this was definitely a solid upgrade on Apple's part. Well done.

I feel the same way. As soon as I saw the iMac and its specs, I thought, This could be my next computer. The problem is money. I have to come up with some cash right away. If I wait, I'll be tempted to wait until MWSF '06 and the announcements it will bring.

My current mac is a 1 GHz 17" iMac. (That's similar to your machine, isn't it ~Shard~?) The machine has simply been amazing but, sadly, it's starting to show its age. It just doesn't seem as snappy as before--even more so after this announcement. ;) Plus, I came one-click away from ordering a couple of iSights last week: one for my folks and one for myself. On top of that, I have to get a new hard drive for my current mac. I've been running on empty for a while there. Could I justify a 2000-dollar computer purchase with the included iSight and a larger hard drive?

Perhaps.

Oh, and I understand how the pros might be upset with this event/announcement. However, the way Apple updated their iMac at an iPod-oriented event was simply genius. The more they market that computer (and the mini) to the iPod crowd, the more we'll see the halo effect materialize. Don't worry. The pro stuff will be along shortly, no doubt.

It was an upgrade definitely worthy of that line of thinking, I had the same thoughts. ;) However, my problem is that nothing on my ultimate wish list has been satisfied yet for my next computer - iLife '07 pre-installed, 10.5 Leopard pre-installed and Blu Ray Superdrive. ;)

Yes, good memory my friend, my machine is a 17" 1.25 GHz G4 iMac. :) Luckily I have not felt like it is showing it's age just yet, so I am probably not in quite the same boat as you. I am still planning on buying a new Mac in 2007, and I don't see why my current one won't be able to last me another year at least.

I hear ya - more HD space is always nice. That's why I BTO'd my iMac with the 160 GB HD right off the bat. I do keep it very clean, but I'm glad I have all that space. When I think of the amount of storage I have on my PC HDs though, and the hundreds of DVD-Rs I've burned, it is a little scary... ;)

Absolutely. If the iMac received such a significant upgrade as this, just imagine what's in store for the PowerBooks and PowerMacs! I don't think that 7448s and 970MPs are out of the question, and by installing DDR2 RAM and PCIe video cards in the new iMac, Apple has pretty much set a benchmark that the PowerMacs will meet or exceed without question. Precedence has been set!

I was really trying to hang onto my old PC, waiting for MacIntels... but the geek in me demands justice.

Guess I'm gonna buy one of these! :D

---Pretty cool information---

I just found something out guys.

I compared the technical specs on the 20-inch display to the 20-inch iMac. The 20-inch cinema used to have better specifications, but not now!!

The iMac's 20 inch display is now brighter, and it has twice the contrast ratio of the 20-inch cinema display.

The best 20-inch display between cinema display and iMac 20 is now the iMac!

Yeah, it makes me want a 20-inch imac more than ever.

It also makes me think the cinema displays will be updated before too long. Anyone think they might build an isight into the cinema displays (like the imac)?

Interesting - guess we'll be seeing Apple display updates soon as well then... ;) Well, probably not until MWSF/early '06, that seems to be when Jobs likes to update them...

Maybe at next Wednesday's event, when he does the other pro stuff.

Yep, now that I see that's what's indeed happening that does make it more likely! Of course, releasing new PowerMacs, PowerBooks and dislpays would be a an awful lot, but it could happen I guess!

We know the displays have to be updated soon though, as the specs on the 20" iMac's display actually outperform the Apple 20" display itself.

I love the update, but where is my long awaited black iMac G5? It's a logical progression, especially considering the new black/white iPod choices. Come on, Apple! :p

Yeah, I think Black is the new White next year...

I would have thought at the very least they would have used an X700.

A 4 pipeline design really is pathetic in this day and age.

I just couldn't bring myself to order the black iPod. It looks pretty cool, but I still love the white and aluminium products. However, the black iPods are becoming so much popular than the white.

Even the 17" now has 500:1 contrast ratio and 250 for brightness. I think the old one was 220 or 230?

You mean integrated iSights in the displays?

I think that has potential, but I would rather they drop the LCD prices, add HD and make a pro-isight that sits along not perpendicular to the screen.
