I guess this means that next Tuesday we will see the PowerMac with the PCIe X850 256MB standard with optional 512MB Radeon X1800XT.
IMHO, the nVidia 7800 is superior all around. ATI's X1K series is disappointing, particularly in Avivo vs PureVideo and CrossFire vs SLI.

I want Photo booth but according to cnet it wont be available to older macs! that sucks!! :(

However, does the X600 alone justify the switch from AGP to PCI-E when the Radeon 9600 Pro and XT would have delivered the same level of performance? (Most iMac users will not use Motion.)

Yes. By going to PCI-E on the iMac means that Apple can get the economies of scale that helps them to move PowerBook and PowerMac to the PCI-E as well.

Of course, Apple could have sticked to AGP until the Intel-transition. They could have upgraded the vid-card on the iMac to best AGP has to offer. But at that point it would have had the same vid-card than the PowerMac would have had. And that would eat in to sales of PowerMac. The vid-cards available for AGP don't go much further than the vid-cards Apple is currently using. By switching to PCI-E, they expand their choices. Their current top-end vid-cards are suddenly low-end vid-cards. They can give a modest upgrade to the iMac (x600), and give the PowerMac a huge update (GF7800 GTX for example, with optional SLI-configuration), ensuring proper product-segmentation. They couldn't do that with AGP, since they are quickly running out of vid-cards.

You need to think of the big picture here.

Of course I understand the benefit to *Apple*. But don't advertise PCI-E as a great advance to the iMac buyer.

Better products in the future, better vid-cards.

Now Apple needs to update to dual-core Powermacs

put the low power G5 in the Powerbooks and iBooks, and maybe introduce a 23" 2.3 GHZ Dual-core iMac. Any chance that they can do all of this by the end of October ?

WOOO.........man this on is cool........and fast, well fast enough for Motion since Apple will bundle it for you   :D :D

Between "slim" and "none". Low-power G5 would not offer any benefit over 7448 G4 (with 200Mhz bus and 1MB of L2-cache). In fact, 7448 would propably outperform it, while being easier to upgrade to, while consuming less power (low-power G5 consumes 16w, 7448 consumes about 10w)

So, there has been no mention of a new iMac on the rumor sites so I bought one last week. Today there's a new one announced which is $200 cheaper, faster processor (2Ghz to 2.1). Faster graphics card, BUILT IN iSight, and cool new programs like Photobooth and FrontRow.

I can return this one for a 10% restock fee (about $200) within 14 days and if I buy ProCare ($99) they can do the migration assistant to transfer files.

But, I don't have it in me-I'm screwed.

You obviously want to do it, so just do it. The restocking fee sucks, but you'll just have to swallow that. As for your files, you could just burn it all to DVD's or better yet, find a friend who's willing to loan you a firewire drive for a while.

As for your decision to buy, you can't really blame apple or the rumor sites. That's the nature of computers... they get updated... and within a short time you will always be out of date. Usually not within a week... but always within 3-6 months. As a rule of thumb though, I would never buy a new mac in late summer or late fall as historically, it seems that Apple often intros new hardware in September and the new year.

That's the 970MP, not 970GX. Cache-specs of 970GX have not been specified.
Must remember the rumors of the 970GX stating 1MB using a single 970MP core, and IBM hasn't specified -- because it may not have been announced yet.

What do you think my odds are...

... at getting a Rev. C 20" iMac? Let me explain. I bought a Rev. A the first week of November last year. I have since suffered my 4th major failure of a component (screen, mid-plane, PSU, screen, in that order :( ). Apple kindly told me to box it up and send it back to them. They are giving me a brand new machine. It just so happens that I dropped it off at FedEX last night.

So what do you think my odds are that I'll get the Rev. C machine? I don't see anywhere on their site to buy a Rev. B other then refurbs. Do you think they change their inventory that fast? Do you think they keep a few thousand of the the B type for situations like mine?

I'm just curious. I'm very happy that they even considered doing this.

They are truely the finest technical company I've ever dealt with.

Thanks.

I'd say your chances are probably 60/40. I honestly don't know how long they keep old stock in their warehouse. Here's why I think they might give you a new one. I have a 40GB monochrome 4G iPod and should it need replacement, they have told me that it would be replaced with a 60GB iPod color when I asked them a few weeks ago. This was an Applecare rep mind you, not a store clerk. I think it would now be replaced with a 60GB iPod video if it broke. I know Apple takes care of their customers so I hope that you get the new one. I have a rev B myself and I'm hoping it needs replacement soon. :D

The ATI Radeon X1800 XT is a faster card than the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX in almost everything BUT Doom3. There are many benchmarks proving it.

GO FOR IT

The educational pricing on the 20inch model is $1599! Crazy. Make it 1 gig of RAM (with two sticks) and you get $1689. I'm seriously considering my first computer purchase since 1999 (and my 1st-generation PowerMac G4)

I actually bought the sawtooth G4 back in 199 too, and just got the education discount on the 20 inch model, I didn't add the ram, because you can get 2GBs of RAM at pricewatch.com for like $70 and if you know what you are doing, can install it yourself

The educatinal price....

Does anyone else see the irony in this?

No, accidentally missing the "o" key does not constitute as irony.

...but it was pretty funny :)

So where's my PhotoBooth?

It might be a Mickey Mouse bit of software but having shelled out 150 Euros only last weekend for an iSight I think I should be allowed a copy of the software that's being rolled out as part of the 'new' iSight deal. Especially when there's nothing more in the box than the camera, some plastic and a cable and anyone who then intends to use it for any standard webcam type usage has to then dig deep for a copy of some third party software to do the job Apple couldn't be arsed to finish.

C'mon, Jobs, grow a heart and reward the regular punters. I think it's only fair.

What new iSight deal? It's part of the new iMac deal...

Inquiring minds want to know useless trivia

Any confirmation yet on where the IR receiver is on the iMac? Is it really in the logo? (My other guesses would be at a corner of the screen, or next to the iSight, or in the bottom, using some weird refection of the thick case.)

And does the remote stick magnetically onto the side of the iMac? Some pictures show it stored there, and other pictures show no kind of mount or attachments. Magnetically would be cool... just don't get it too close to your iPod!

They built iSight into the new iMac and bundled software with it. It's clearly being referred to as "built-in iSight" and not "iMacSight" or as just "iMac with a camera built in" so that implies that iSight *the product* now has some software available for it called PhotoBooth. So, as the proud owner of a new iSight, where's my software?

Yep get a new iSight for only $1299 and we'll custom build an iMac round it for you. :D

Magnetically. It says so on Apple's website

Magnets?!?!? With hard drives inside? -1 point on design for Apple. ;)

yeah, like no-one that designs and builds computers at Apple would have realised...

how strong a magnet do you think that is to hold what is a slightly oversized ipod shuffle (the remote)...

Um ... it's called sarcasm. ;)

Apple definitely knows what they are doing when they design their products. This is why they are so profitable. :)

Wow. I went to Berlin last night, and been working until now. Thought I drop by MR to see what "one more thing was".
Very impressed, especialy as I´m about to by an iMac 20". I just decided to wait, just in case. I have to say I never thought they´ll throw in this much.
:D
