Will Photobooth be available for all other macs later on? I have an iSight in my PowerBook, and would love to pootle around with it. Front Row would be nice too, if the remote is BT...

Anyone noticed that the eMac is no longer available, at least to consumers. It's only available thru the education institutional (not education personal) or state & local government online stores.

Apple's eMac page is still up, but there aren't any links to it thru the other desktop Mac pages like before.

I just saw this myself. I guess they didn't feel like updating those.

emac gone

The emac has disapeared from the Canada Education Store.

Only one memory slot?

One standard slot with 512 memory
And only "one user" slot for up to 2.5MB of memory?
Is'nt that going backwards?

Feh. Photobooth -- cute, but hardly newsworthy.

Remote is useless without video inputs.

C'mon Apple, you got 85% of the way to something truly awesome... why not finish the job????

I want Front Row on my PowerBook! Whats up with the iMac Only-sheize!?

Is it IR or Bluetooth?

I was thinking the same thing. I'll bet there are tons of Mac mini owners lusting after it as well. I hope they step up and make this available for other Macs.

I don't understand why you would upgrade a product that is already selling well but not upgrade the products that are in dire need of upgrading.

If there are no powerbook updates now you can bet that there will be a major update in Jan '06

I thought the last 20" had hit my sweet spot, but:
$100 price drop
faster CPU
better GPU
built in iSight
extra 1GB RAM is only $200 compared to $180 on Crucial (for rev B RAM) - it's not worth getting 3rd party RAM anymore. Could there be a new Apple policy of not overcharging for RAM?

The Apple Store is listing an 'Apple Remote' for $29.99 that looks just like the Front Row remote. Thing is, they have the remote working with iPods too!

Just do a search for 'Front Row' from the main Apple Store site. Someone want to guess what's going on with this whole Front Row thing?!

Who want's to watch TV on their computer - or their iPod for that matter 😕 I seem to recall Steve saying that as well. It still holds true. Get H.264 content in 16x9 aspect ratio to my HDTV from my Mac and then I'll get excited. I have to admit though, it is a step in the direction I was hoping for. Finally video is for sale on iTunes. Guess they'll keep the name the same...

I think that the built-in iSight looks ugly. The updated video card, processor bump and update graphics card are nice though.

Good update overall but I was really expecting to see something happen to the PowerBooks.

Well, at least the Apple remote in no way makes my 3 month old AirClick useless. This all certainly makes the iMac look more appealing, but really, other than the remote integration with FrontRow, what's new? PhotoBooth is about as useful as the puzzle widget is for me.

Hopefully FrontPage will come to other Macs (though I somewhat doubt it as it's something exclusive to the iMac). If it does, I'd bet Griffin would update AirClick to work with FrontPage (seeing as how they updated it for use with Mail, iChat, etc.)

No built-in modem anymore either, just a USB add-on option...wouldn't the people buying the iMac be less likely to have broadband in the first place?

Is the e-Mac dead?

Sorry- redundant by the time I could get past the server busy messages....

If you go to the Apple Store website- No eMac! The only eMac's available are used/refurbished ones. When I saw the lower price on the 20" and the built in iSight it made me think- wither the eMac? With the mini coming up underneath it and the iMac above- I was about to say that it was probably only left at the education store but I just checked- no eMacs at the education store online either!

The Specs are *VERY VERY* interesting...

anyone else bothered to notice this?

Processor and memory
* 1.9GHz or 2.1GHz PowerPC G5 processor with Velocity Engine
* 512K on-chip level 2 cache at full processor speed
* 633MHz or 700MHz frontside bus
* 512MB of PC2-4200 (533MHz) DDR2 SDRAM expandable to 2.5GB; one memory slot

I bet these things are actually pretty fast now. 2.1GHz G4 (which is *very* efficient) with a 1/3 speed FSB... If they put something similar into the MacMini soon, I'm a buyer. 🙂

good riddance 😛

On a serious note, i think the iMac update is kinda wimpy. I mean the remote is a nice feature, and the built in iSight is a plus, but i don't need that stuff. It seems kinda uglier to me also with the black circle for the camera and like the remote hanging on the side or w/e. The ads seem tacky and less sleek... 🙁

It is utter poppycock that they didn't update the now VERY sluggish Pro lines...grrr.

This is everything I would want in a desktop machine. I am particularly impresed by Front Row. I think it would be perfect for my apartment, or a dorm room. I also am quite pleased about the graphics upgrade. It's nice to see Apple include truly modern graphics technology in their systems.

Power Updates

This must mean that the Intel PowerBooks/iBooks are coming in January at Macworld. Or at least a big update then.

Remote appears to be IR. In the Apple store, it says that it requires the new Universal iPod dock, which seems to have an IR receiver on the front and requires AC power from your iPod's power adapter.

If this is true, then Nano owners (like me) are screwed - $30 for the remote, $40 for the dock, and another $30 for the power adapter. $100 to get an IR remote and wired dock seems steep.

Hey good catch....didn't even notice.
Well, I think this solves the problem of the Mini and eMac cannibalizing each other.

This also explains why the eMac was pulled out of the kid's area of the Apple Stores earlier this year...I wonder if they were had planned to pull it earlier, but had too much extra stock.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see PCI-E in this machine. The X600 is definitely a big step up. And you know what this means folks, oh yes...PCI-E will almost certainly show up in the next Power Mac G5 update, and possibly even in the last Powerbooks. GeForce 7800 Ultra SLI anyone? (well, maybe...)

The new iMac is a superior machine, and Apple still has the plot.

I was too busy looking at the 128MB DDR video card...on an all-in one G5 system, at that price. Man, the iMac's becoming much more appealing again.
