Front Row

So what is the deal with this, is apple going to make some sort of TV input of their own? Or can front Row support Eye tv in it? I mean if we can get that to work i can replace my computer and my tv all in one stroke. Come on Apple I want more details.

X600...big whoop.

Why is everyone drooling over the X600 XT/Pro? It's just the 9600 XT/Pro with PCI-Express instead of AGP. There is not even a small performance upgrade there. Just an already slow graphics card on a new connection. Pointless. 9600/X600 are the same cards on two different standards, one of which is a waste and is just a marketing ploy to make it sound faster. If anything, the slight processor speed bump will be the reason of game performance gains, not this graphics card. Still, very nice update for the graphics, now only a 1.5 year old graphics card instead of a 2.5 year old graphics card.

Loving the built in iSight. The iSight also looks fine in it, I don't see the big deal there with it.

As for modem people..is it really that painful to use a USB dongle instead of a built in modem? Not like it's expensive and there aren't enough ports to go around.

I'd buy one of these if I didn't need the upgrade abilities of a G5 tower; definitely know some people who will be checking these out though. Very nice upgrades. Good job Apple.

I'm liking the new iMac, but Apple missed the boat. This cannot compare with Media Center PC's because there is NO TV TUNER!! What's the point of watching all your videos with remote? You need a built-in tv tuner and it would be PERFECT. But it comes up just a bit short. By the way, anybody want a Mighty Mouse? ;-)
There are a number of outboard video capture boxes that interface via USB or FireWire. I think TV-Tuners would appeal to a niche audience and they can plug their DVD players, Cable TV tuners, or Satellite receivers into these outboard boxes (or buy an outboard box with a built-in TV tuner).

How is this getting so many negatives? Unbelievable. Don't let the lack of powerbook/powermac updates deter from the fact that this is an incredible deal for the iMac!

Well many of us have been waiting FOR TOO LONG for some type of an update to the powerbooks and powermacs.

The imac update is fine but not incredible. Frankly, to be incredible there should have been a tv tuner in it. :(

Who wants to start the count down until the first hacks for hijacking the onboard camera debut?

FrontRow should be standalone

The thing I don't get is why they make the iMac the platform for FrontRow. A built-in screen - and a large screen at that - would seem to be counterintuitive in a setting where you'd also have your TV. What would seem to make much more sense would be a Mac Mini with FrontRow. Combine this with TV inputs (so you could make your mini also a DVR) and now you have a killer appliance. Imagine one box that could:

(1) Play and record DVD's.
(2) Play and record TV shows.
(3) Play your home videos, show photo slide shows, play your entire music collection
(4) Surf the internet, from your couch.

If you combined a Mac Mini with Front Row and added a coaxial input, you'd have it.

Instead, you have two monitors (your TV and the iMac) in your living room. Makes no sense. And, you can't even buy FrontRow (which I would, providing it was less than $100) for your existing mac. I just don't get it.

Missed it by that much

I think Apple is making a fatal flaw, at least from a consumer perspective. It's obvious that this latest round of innovation is a foray into the living room, to bring the computer into the center of the home entertainment universe. It appears they have opted not to tie the computer more closely into your existing televisions and I believe this is a huge mistake.

Instead, they're asking consumers to pay for television shows. They could have made it possible to record these shows from the cable or satellite feed, and play them back on your computer or your iPod but that would have disturbed the TV studios, no doubt. Advantage = Media Center PC, TiVO to go, you name it, there are plenty of better options out there.

And where are the movies? Coming soon perhaps, even likely, but for now, most notably absent.

My home entertainment is TV, movies, music, games, and internet. While Apple is excelling at delivering my music, and certainly as good as anyone with internet, they are falling woefully short on revolutionizing TV and movies. In time perhaps, but for now, I am underwhelmed. I guess I've come to expect an Apple that's better than TiVo, better than Netflix, and so far, they're just not.

I know I sound all negative but the new iPod is very cool, a step in the right direction certainly. And the new iMacs are great, they are certainly revolutionizing my iLife. PCI Express is a welcome sign, simply because I hope to buy a new Power Mac soon.

Is it just me, or is the 20" iMac actually $100 less than what MacRumors is quoting?

I'm seeing a $1699 computer when I check out the online store.

Total uninteresting upgrade with a serious downgrade for memory (only one slot). I don't want a media PC i need one for my work.

His steveness seems to target only the multimedia kiddies but not professional computer customers anymore. So much rumors about dual core and dual dual core, but hey did anybody really thought they are available for the mass market ? Staying with my virus free, super power dual core AMD Athlon and a slow Rev. A iMac G5.

My new iMac G5 20" was purchased 33 days ago (September 7th). I'm pretty bummed about this upgrade -- had no indication it was coming given the spped bumps from a few months ago. At least I got an academic price..

Is it worth trying to sell my iMac and get one of the new ones or are the enhancements even worth it? I guess I could probably buy a Mighty Mouse and iSight and a 3rd party remote..

Bottom line is, the PB line sucks. I just ordered my PC labtop, didn't want to wait any longer. & I'll run OS X hacked on it, shoud be fun :)
I think it was VERY stupid of Apple not upgarding their PBs today. People were pissed of already with this hughe delay for an *actual* update. (no cosmetic like last one)

Before your PC ships you might want to consider that new PBs and PMs will need 10.4.3, which (hopefully) is close to release. Why would they need 10.4.3? Maybe because they will have dual cores - the Freescale G4 for the PB and the IBM G5 for the PM.

My PB is only a year and a half old, but if I was in the market I would be waiting to see what 10.4.3 brings before jumping to conclusions - or spending my money on something that runs XP.

I totally didn't see this coming! ;) PowerMacs, PowerBooks, but not iMacs! Nonetheless, I think the upgrade is amazing - Front Row, faster processors, built-in iSight, great new video card, faster RAM - it's all good! Makes me want a new iMac, but I much exercise my restraint...

Looks like you can get Front Row w/o a new iMac, which is good.
Uh, where do you see this? It's not listed under Software at the main apple site, and I can't find it at the store either.

a great update to the iMac... actually i think it could be called close to "fantastic" if it included 1 GB ram as well at least for the more expensive model
not only did they bump the performance but they included a cam + remote + new mouse + additional software as well
the imac just became a real good deal (exception: ram as usual)

now it's time to upgrade the other lines

I need this for my power mac

man I hope this will be available for other macs!!!

It has to be.....right?

I think it eventually will be. Sure, for now Apple might be having it stay exclusive to the iMac to push the iMac as a home entertainment system of sorts, and wants the iMac to have that distinction, but I think it makes sense to eventually include all these new features, or at least some variants of them, on their other machines.

If the iMac update was this good, I can't wait to see what the PowerMac and PowerBook updates bring!

Relax

The Powerbook and Power Macs will be upgraded by November. Period. I'd bet $200 (if I had $200 to bet!)

And I'm positive we'll see FrontRow on the Intel Mac mini in January. Think of the advertising blitz! Plug into monitor and you have a computer - plug into TV and you have a multimedia box!

"Professional computer customers" don't use iMacs. SJ is targeting exactly who he needs to target with a $1300-$1600 all-in-one CPU.

This is almost perfect machine for me..... sadly we did not see any updates for the powerbooks....was contemplating to get one....

PCI-E Graphics and DDR-2 before the Intel switch-wow (must be a Intrepid 2 chipset in the new iMac), and built in iSight, Media center and remote (AE Express compatible perhaps).

And a XT ATI graphics card-but the ports are aligned across the bottom (ala PBG4 Titanium or PBG3), instead of downwards.

PB and PM-PCI-E (next week?)

The mid-plane and logic board must have been redesigned to support the iSight and PCI-E (which chipset?)

damn you apple!!! my imac and 30gb ipod are no longer cutting edge!! im soooo outdated.

Welcome to the wonderful world of technology! :p ;)

I'm probably in worse shape than you - my current setup is a 17" 1.25 GHz G4 iMac and a 3G 20 GB iPod. But, they both still do the trick for me, so I have no real reason to upgrade for a while yet. Although I might pick up one of these video iPods sooner than I was initially planning... ;)

Ditto. I would have bought such a headless box instantly.

Unfortunately an iMac doesn't currently fit in my plans for the network, so The next box I buy will most likely be the first intel mini.

Anyone else find it odd that the mini's specs are still at 1.42 GHz at the store. What is holding them back from formally announcing the (late 2005) Mac mini?
