Hey good catch....didn't even notice.
Well, I think this solves the problem of the Mini and eMac cannibalizing each other.

This also explains why the eMac was pulled out of the kid's area of the Apple Stores earlier this year...I wonder if they were had planned to pull it earlier, but had too much extra stock.

Funny, I was in the Apple Store in Oxford Circus in London about 2 weeks ago and the eMacs were certainly still in the upstairs Kids area.

Still, good to see them go. They really were a hold over and with the Mini, they really werent necessary.

YEAR OF THE POWERBOOK - ROTFL

It's been a year the PB got an update worthy that label.
What disturbs me is, we hear SJ tell us:
"This is the year of the PB", "This is the year of HD", ...
Anyone still believes any of this?
That is pro-line "talk".
And what do we get? Nothing really, apart from some stuff to toy with. An iMac, stilll last century PBs, a new iPod (another lie of SJ - how many times did he tell us a vpod was not appopriate for reason x and y?) ,... stuff to play with.

Look at Apple's sales, this year they sold more PBs than desktops. Imagine what that could have been if they'd take them serious.
OK, they misplanned their whole CPU strategy (betting on one IBM horse), but they have no excuse for not updating the screens (HD is there, other makes have it in their portables, Apple PBs still have screens from 2002, "remarkable" for a company with a niche in graphics), their HD, RAM, etc ...

Bottom line is, the PB line sucks. I just ordered my PC labtop, didn't want to wait any longer. & I'll run OS X hacked on it, shoud be fun :)
I think it was VERY stupid of Apple not upgarding their PBs today. People were pissed of already with this hughe delay for an *actual* update. (no cosmetic like last one)

anyone else bothered to notice this?

Processor and memory
* 1.9GHz or 2.1GHz PowerPC G5 processor with Velocity Engine
* 512K on-chip level 2 cache at full processor speed
* 633MHz or 700MHz frontside bus
* 512MB of PC2-4200 (533MHz) DDR2 SDRAM expandable to 2.5GB; one memory slot

I bet these things are actually pretty fast now. 2.1GHz G4 (which is *very* efficient) with a 1/3 speed FSB... If they put something similar into the MacMini soon, I'm a buyer. :)

Binky
The last revs also had a 3x CPU to FSB ratio. And I think you misspelled "G5".

You won't get a G5 in the mini, hence no increase in FSB

These things are hot. And so are the built in iSights. And FrontRow.

Apple has made some great marketing decisions... :)

Wow. I am flabbergasted. I didn't think Apple would upgrade the iMac so 'soon,' that's why I felt safe buying the Rev. B in May... this update is so nice. Sigh. Ah well, I still have an awesome machine, just, not as awesome. :(

Anyone stop to think how bad those 320x240 or 480x480 music videos and tv shows downloaded from iTMS are going to look fullscreen on an iMac in FrontRow?

godstuff

Always good to see the latest technologies on the new products, PCI Express is great, the new video cards are awesome for gamers, maybe more games to come? the isight integrated is a plus, I know a lot of people that got the 20inch imac and got no isight because it was too expensive and ended up on msn messenger, so this is a step towards ichat, apple should bundle the isight with the other machines at like half the price... to get people to buy them, because it seems they are cheap to make now... and smaller maybe?the DDR2 ram is a good thing, although I just hate the soldered in memory system... give me 2 empty slots!

the apps are ok, but for a smaller crowd... who needs that anyways? I need portable speed and the powerbook G4 has just been here for too long.... if the imac can get a g5 a powerbook has to be able to get one too, it is the pro portable... give us the pro processor!

the remote is ok... but BT was in order.. infrarred is so last century...

good to see AE built in, wireless is in, 56k is so out... what about a 23 inch imac? that would be cool...

and I am still waiting to see the pb upgrades before years end

the ipod video... um... good price and good start on the tv episodes... but I hope to see more shows soon... like 24, alias, scrubs etc... a friends megapack or seinfeld would kick ars...

so now lets focus APPLE: Think different than ipod!

What about the fans?

Because the body looks thinner at the corners and bowed out slightly in the middle back, I wondering if the guts have been rearranged/redesigned inside. I am particularly interested if the fan system problems have been addressed. I can't imagine these new iMacs are going to run any cooler, so hopefully they have attended to the incredibly high noise level the fans make when gaming, or doing other intense CPU crunching.

Any thoughts?

This must mean that the Intel PowerBooks/iBooks are coming in January at Macworld. Or at least a big update then.
pb be updated on tuesday. I have no doubt about it.

Except the mac mini doesn't support core video whereas the emac does. The emac also had better a better hard drive.

Not only ugly...

I think that the built-in iSight looks ugly. The updated video card, processor bump and update graphics card are nice though.

Good update overall but I was really expecting to see something happen to the PowerBooks.
But there doesn't appear to be any way to tilt or pan it at all. Adjusting the position of the iMac so that you have no glare and your head properly framed sounds like an exercise in frustration.

DVD burner is lower on the side, and the ports are horizontal along the bottom instead of vertical on the side. I think its safe to say that some level of rearrangement has occurred.

How is this getting so many negatives? Unbelievable. Don't let the lack of powerbook/powermac updates deter from the fact that this is an incredible deal for the iMac!

I'm liking the new iMac, but Apple missed the boat. This cannot compare with Media Center PC's because there is NO TV TUNER!! What's the point of watching all your videos with remote? You need a built-in tv tuner and it would be PERFECT. But it comes up just a bit short. By the way, anybody want a Mighty Mouse? ;-)

Color me impressed.

I wrote a lot of scathing messages last time around with Apple's decision to put in an obsolete Radeon 9600, but with today's X600 Pro and X600 XT in PCI-E clothing, Apple has shut me up.

The 1 memory slot seems puzzling, but should be okay for those willing to buy 2GB DIMMs or future higher capacity ones.

Good question. I think it's Bluetooth, because the tech specs don't say anything about IR, but the new iMac does have a built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) module.
I'm going to go with line-of-sight IR, disappointing as that is.

Because the iPod docks now have a reciever for the Apple Remote! Very cool! But it does look like an IR receiver.

That explains IR--BT for the dock would be too expensive to make standard.

I suppose it's possible that the remote ALSO has BT, but it seems unlikely. So I wonder where the IR receiver is? Part of the iSight?

It tilts, and the whole thing can be moved side-to-side quite easily. We're not talking an 80-pound CRT here.

The tech specs for the new iMac don't mention anything about IR, so I suspect that the remote is Bluetooth. I called Apple to ask about the compatibility of the new remote with my older (1st Gen) iMac G5. He hadn't heard of it (which isn't surprising) but he looked up the information and said that it "should" work with the older iMac's as long as they have Bluetooth. However, take this with a grain of salt, as I don't have the greatest confidence in his answer. At any rate, I placed my order for one anyways. FYI, it's part number MA128G/A.

Looks like you can get Front Row w/o a new iMac, which is good. Apple wants a whole lotta coin for remote (since you also have to buy a new iPod dock - stupid), but I wonder if the software will be free for all? If so, I can easily see using it with a) a third part remote or b) a wireless mouse.

Still no AE AV, though. :(

Agreed. But it's not MEANT to be a media center PC.

Regular TV and DVDs are about 640x480 already, and we watch those all the time. Only HDTV is better.

I don't think this was "the year of the PB." But regardless, why is it SO upsetting if Apple chose NOT to throw everything into this PARTICULAR event? They can release other stuff any time. What was magical about THIS event having to include pro stuff? Apple never suggested any such thing--only rumor sites did. So stay tuned...

Check the dock requirements carefully - you also need a power adapter. Since the Nanos that you and I have don't come with one, we'll have to drop another $30 on that, too.

Wouldn't do me any good to have a classic "TV tuner" on my computer. I'm using a digital cable subscription.

Analog tv tuners are out, just like dial-up modems (with apologies to everyone without digital tv cable/satellite and/or internet cable/dsl access).
