hmm, You may be onto something. Now we need to see if they sell the remote separately. In the past Apple made it hard to use aftermarket IR remotes for their systems with built in IRDA.

Its up for sale already, though it has a 2-3 week leadtime. You just need the new dock and a power supply to go with it.

Remote sold for 29.00.

"The Apple Remote requires the iPod Universal Dock and any iPod with a Dock connector. "

CHOICE! I couldn't find it and i was trying to use search just now!

Apple Remote with iPod
If you connect your iPod to a home stereo, powered speakers or TV set, the Apple Remote lets you experience your songs, slideshows and more from across the room. Just plug your iPod into the Universal Dock and choose a playlist, slideshow or video. Then, sit back, relax and enjoy. Ready to move on to the next song? No need to get up from your sofa--just press the forward button on the Apple Remote. Phone ringing? Just click pause, then pick up where you left off.

The Apple Remote offers play/pause, volume control and forward/back buttons.

The Apple Remote requires the iPod Universal Dock and any iPod with a Dock connector.

Apple Remote with Mac
Included with the new iMac G5, the Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It combines with Front Row -- a menu-driven, full-screen interface -- to make accessing your iMac's digital bounty from any seat in the room as simple as navigating your iPod. When you click the Apple Remote's Menu button, your desktop fades and Front Row's sleek interface takes its place to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Movies folder and whatever DVDs you want to play. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slideshow, a home movie you made in iMovie, even a movie trailer. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

After I get an iBook next week, I will have to order this for my PM G5!

Must be 1000's of people on Apples site in Minnesota or something!

And yes, PCI-E is the most important thing. I would much rather have PCI-E than AGP, it is a far superior technology.
PCI-E may be superior, but there must be a video card to take advantage of the bandwidth it provides. Touting PCI-E on the new iMac as a significant advantage over its predecessor is meaningless since the X600 Pro and XT offer only small incremental real-world performance improvements. PCI-E may have the potential for a lot more, but that potential is stifled by the captive video card, heat or no heat.

Edit: I should add that I'm still very impressed. Nothing is perfect, but this iMac comes close.

I noticed that, too. I was hoping no one else did!
Anyhow, the thing that gets me is it uses the power adapter from your iPod, and the Nanos don't come with them. What the heck!?!

Quicktime 7.0.3

Did anyone else have problems insatlling itunes 6? It said I needed quicktime 7.0.3. I talked to a support agent, who said quicktime updates were imminent and would feature audio and video streaming.

Has anyone else noticed how much the upgrade is to add another 2GB of RAM?

£820!!! only £79 less than the 17" iMac
Remember that's a single 2GB DDR2 stick of RAM, much more expensive than two 1GB sticks.

Crucial has 2GB DDR2 533 RAM for $1073 (it's $1200 for the 2GB upgrade in the US), which means Apple is still overcharging but not grossly.

Edit: Should just point out, that's Crucial's generic RAM. They don't, of course, have Apple-specific RAM available for the new revision.

A media event is for the mass market.

Apple will use different channels (expos or quiet press releases) to introduce new PMs and PBs.

And to keep bolstering its stock price, Apple will stagger new product announcements over a small number of weeks, not all at once. This keeps the momentum going.

Not me, but will the built in camera turn some people away, because of the whole "spying" on them, or the feeling their being watched?

Maybe they can sell white "i Privacy" tape, or is there a shutter like the 'ol fashioned isight?

One more thing...

iMac refurbs are now super cheap:

rev A 17" iMac -- $749

rev B 17" iMac -- $849

That rev B is the perfect first computer for my mom. She doesn't need all the extra bells and whistles introduced today.

I just don't see that this is all that exciting. PhotoBooth -- cute, but practically useless. Remote -- ok, good for DVDs... BUT WHERE ARE THE VIDEO INPUTS/TV TUNER????

Incremental step, not that interesting. Wake me up when Apple does something revolutionary.

Actually, PCI-E should be much faster for things like Motion where data has to travel both was on the graphics bus. Maybe now Motion will actually render in real-time.

Why would a consumer electronics company get all worked up about a low-volume niche product like the PowerMac?

When Apple decided to upgrade the iMac to a faster CPU than is found in a PowerMac (2.1 GHz vs the low-end PowerMac at 2.0), the company pretty much announced to the world that its "professional" machines are an afterthought at best.

If Apple had wanted to maintain the perception that its professional machines were at the forefront of its product line, it would AT LEAST have upgraded the low-end PowerMac to 2.1 or 2.2 GHz before upgrading the iMac.

Instead, Apple got the media buzz it cares about, promoting the products it truly cares about. Upgrades to the "professional" computers -- a shrinking niche in Apple's product line -- will be made with little fanfare sometime after media buzz over the video iPod has died down.

It's been a year the PB got an update worthy that label.
What disturbs me is, we hear SJ tell us:
"This is the year of the PB", "This is the year of HD", ...
Anyone still believes any of this?
That is pro-line "talk".
And what do we get? Nothing really, apart from some stuff to toy with. An iMac, stilll last century PBs, a new iPod (another lie of SJ - how many times did he tell us a vpod was not appopriate for reason x and y?) ,... stuff to play with.

Look at Apple's sales, this year they sold more PBs than desktops. Imagine what that could have been if they'd take them serious.
OK, they misplanned their whole CPU strategy (betting on one IBM horse), but they have no excuse for not updating the screens (HD is there, other makes have it in their portables, Apple PBs still have screens from 2002, "remarkable" for a company with a niche in graphics), their HD, RAM, etc ...

Bottom line is, the PB line sucks. I just ordered my PC labtop, didn't want to wait any longer. & I'll run OS X hacked on it, shoud be fun :)
I think it was VERY stupid of Apple not upgarding their PBs today. People were pissed of already with this hughe delay for an *actual* update. (no cosmetic like last one)
Shame you probably missed out on next Tuesday's Powerbook updates. :p

Is Apple just reduced to gimmicks these days? I use my computer to make a living, where's my help from them in doing that?

Yeah kids, flame on.

You are absolutely right!
I'll try to be positive and hope the PM and PB will be upgrade next Tuesday or the latest before end of October. If not Apple will piss of so many professionals that depend on them.
I like the new Imac and video Ipod, so hopefully Steve will update the professional machines without the fanfare of this announcement today.
Maybe this is his plan. I would think he doesn't personally want to announce PPC dual core and few months later introduce Intel. Let's hope so.

The iMac is a gr8 upgrade.....

And not in the least by the possibilities it gives the Power Mac in the (very?) near future...

DDR2 RAM
PCI-E grfx....

nVidia 7800?
ATi X1800 XT?

I smell a super-duper fast Power Mac coming... pretty soon! :)

If your're so upset about it, I'm sure that if it's only on order (not even in your possession yet!) you could cancel.

but its coming from the states, shipping TOO canada cost me about $200 in the first place, so to send it back, same amount PLUS if it gets held at customs, which it probably will. and thats just shipping for the comp and speakers, i ordered monitor with it, another $50-$100 shipping.....i dunno i'll rele have to think about this, its already gone into shipping, so i can't CANCEL it, but theres a 30 day money back no questions asked guarantee...i'll see
