I've had my imac & ipod for just under three weeks now. Do apple have any policy that would allow me to return it for one of these?

Its not a huge deal really, jus keeping my options open!

Actually, PCI-E should be much faster for things like Motion where data has to travel both was on the graphics bus. Maybe now Motion will actually render in real-time.

Absolutely, as I indicated in my above post, I agree with this.

Motion is an excellent example. As you say, it tries to pull the data back over the AGP bus in a direction that it's not designed to go, which is why previews are faster than rendering to a file. Anything that needs to move data in both directions like that runs much faster with PCI-E.

Similarly, PCI-E also solves the slowdown you incur when moving from GPU to system RAM, if I'm not mistaken...

The emac also had better a better hard drive.
Which I definitely appreciate when editing EyeTV recordings. I also like having the Pioneer DVD burner instead of a Matsushita even if it's "only" the DVR-107 (with updated firmware). And two FW ports is nice so the EyeTV and my wife's iPod mini can be attached at the same time. Plus you can add more RAM than in a Mac mini.

Really, my only complaint with our eMac is its excessive fan noise and since that hasn't bothered my wife there's no reason to replace it.

Psst... new iMac... new iMac. Incredible bargain. That is a great reason to replace your emac.

Those iMac's are becoming more and more appealing. Still kinda shocked that the PowerBook did not get updated. The iPod Video is cool. One question. Why did they even bother with itunes 5 when it was only out for a a few months. That seemed a little short lived.

I figure this was a consumer oriented event. I wouldn't be surprised to see the pro machines quietly updated on tuesday morning. I do agree about iTunes. It should be 5.1, not 6.

Here's my take on the new iMac.
Pros:
1. Finally, a new chipset
2. 128mb PCI-E x600Pro/XT.
3. built-in iSight with photobooth software
4. Mighty Mouse Now Standard
5. Front Row.

Cons:
1. Still no Card Reader
2. Single memory slot
3. Only 512mb of RAM. At this price point and with that single memory slot should be 1gb.
4. Price. I wish Apple would have taken this opportunity to drop the prices $200
5. No PVR software.

What I would have liked to see:
1. Apple branded Card Reader/ 3 or port USB HUB in brushed metal and white. $29.99 Retail and included with all new Macs.
2. USB TV tuner with deluxe remote and iTV software.
3. AirPort Express with video out and remote compatibility. Mirror your iMac on your TV.
4. Stand alone 17" wide-screen display with built-in iSight and updated version of existing displays with built in iSights.
5. Headless cousin of new iMac with full sized PCI-E slot and 1-3 PCI slots.
6. Similar Updates to Mini.
Overall: 9/10.

Indeed you do! Although I do still have my walkman kicking around somewhere... ;)
Plus ... I can blow away my Blue / White with my speedy 500 MHz Titanium Laptop. Dang, I wish they would update their pro lines. I'm screaming for something new. I understand that the current lineup is a serious upgrade from my present Book, but I'm selfish and greedy and want the NEXT best thing. :D

1. This is Apple's first attempt at a "Media Center" PC. I think improvements will come with future versions. As usual, they blow it out of the ball park with their first attempt. Front Row makes MS' Media Center UI look like crap.

2. They need to had front row and TV-in to the Mac mini (and HD capabilities). That way you could hook up the Mac Mini to any HD TV.

3. The Photobooth app looks pretty cool. They used the screen as a "flash"...shows what ingenuity is over there at Apple.

P.S. "Old" iMacs are as cheap as $750 at the Apple Store's "clearance"/refurbished section.

Like I said before, with the iMacs receiving such a major update, just imagine what's in store for the PowerMacs and PowerBooks! ;) :)

anyone notice that the new iMac is also lighter than the old ones?

20" from 11.4KG to 10KG

17" from 8.4KG to 7KG

its now 1.4KG lighter...

Yep - lighter and thinner yet more powerful in almost every way - now that's great Engineering!

Nope. It is the same return policy. Under 14 days.

Sweet! Finally a competitor to MediaPC's!

How exactly is this a competitor? You can't display it on a TV!!!!!!!! What's the point? And don't give me that crap about it having video out because it's crap resolution and is hardly worth mentioning. Who wants a full screen show on that dinky 17" screen? You can view up to 30' away! Really? Whoopee, who can see anything on a moniter that far away? And why would you want too? This will not make sense until they figure out how to get it off the Mac and onto your HDTV.

Oh, add a movie rentals to iTunes too. Now we're talking. ;)

I'm surprised there is no scroll wheel on the remote. The Front Row UI displays your music library in a very iPod-like way; with the iPod, Apple has taught us that we need that scroll wheel to quickly navigate through pages and pages of artists/albums/songs. But now I figure we'll have to hold down the next/prev buttons to scroll, which is basically what all the iPod competitors have had to resort to. But Apple ... couldn't you have done better here? And is it not so obvious that I seem to be the first person to mention this?

I'm somewhat surprised there is no black iMac yet. The good news is, the iMac is finally looking appealing to me again. After the G4 800, one of these could be the desktop upgrade I, and many others, could be looking for. I'm glad to see Apple kicking out new ways of doing things again.

I hope Power Macs get PCI-E soon. The NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX would be great for the Power Mac. Although I expect the ATI Radeon X600 XT/Pro for the new Power Macs.

I really don't think you guys understand the significance of the built in iSight. iChat AV never really took off, now it has no excuse.

You seem angry my son... Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to irrational posts on message boards.

But seriously, I'll bet the next machine to get the media features is the Mac Mini. I would be all over a $500 mac Mini with HD output over DVI/HDMI with the FrontRow software and an IR remote. That's a media center. PVR features would be nice, but I don't think we're there yet. Maybe if Apple buys Tivo and puts a cable card slot in the mini. Right now I'd be happy kepping my PVR (HD Tivo from DirecTV) for TV watching. The "media mac Mini" would replace my DVD player and the iPod dock I have, adding the ability to view photos and various video clips with a nice interface. Oh yeah, and it's a computer, so I suppose I could check my email or what-not :)

btw IMHO i prefer the original iMac design, not only coz i own it but i dont really like the iSight on the new ones...my fd said it looks like someone drew a dot on top of the screen. It ruins the design (meant to be SIMPLE!!)
and also it means that u have to seat up straight when using it or else u wont be in the middle of the cam, u lost the freedom to place it anywhere u like.

also theres no modem now...it isnt only for connecting to the net but also FAX!

the software....FrontRow! 1st time i saw it i think its cool but now i think its a bit pointness..just for showing off... if u rather browse ur 1000 songs using that shuffle stylied remote i rather use my mouse... it doesnt have a scroll pad like iPod and the nano. how convenience can that be when looking for a song?

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING

Apple could yet become a computer company again

What awesome specs for the iMac - Brilliant

56k is NOT out

good to see AE built in, wireless is in, 56k is so out... what about a 23 inch imac? that would be cool...

Unless you NEED a modem. Not everyone, even in the Buffalo, NY, has access to high speed. For many areas, 56k is all that is available. I really hope this is not a trend for laptops, which I am in the market for once they are updated

I did not add a  , so I'm not technically mad ;) just dissappointed. It just doesn't make sense without any connection to a television. I would add more thing however, turn the remote into a shuffle, then everyone who wants to use Frontrow will need to buy a shuffle! See how that works?
