Great job with the new iMacs. Apple keeps making them better but the PM's are still stuck in neutral. Come on, Apple! Stop ripping off your POWER users!
Apple stock fell 10% because gross revenue was below expectations despite being record high. This was probably due to lackluster sales of PMs and PBs. Although 1.2M Macs were sold with roughly 50% desktop and 50% laptop, Apple did not break it down any further, so if my guess is right, Apple needs to jumpstart PM and PB sales to hit revenue targets for the 4th quarter.

PMs and PBs might not account for the lion's share of unit volume, but they can most certainly account for a big share of the revenue volume.

So the real question is: How does the remote work? Bluetooth or infrared? Can I download FrontRow for a Mac Mini and buy a remote for it, because I would totally do that to hook up to my HDTV.

That said, for the first time, I am really considering the iMac. Pretty awesome.

-p-

FINALLY, someone with the same questions i have. I know we'll be able to buy Front Row for other macs but i cant find it on the apple website for purchase. I only see references for it in the context of it coming with the new iMac.

HOW DO I GET THAT LONG AWAITED ADHESIVE NAMED FRONT ROW?

I've been see-sawing back and forth deciding between an iMac and an iBook for about a year now.

I'm back to the iMac. This computer is seriously sexy. And much cheaper, too. I could almost justify shelling out for a 20" model now. Mmmm...

Question though. I may be moving overseas in the next 2 years. To transport a sexy iMac, is it possible to take apart the base from the body?

Thanks. And go Apple! I want my iMac now. NOW! But I'm going to Singapore, Thailand, China and Japan instead. :D

Why in the world would they not update the powerbook? I was holding off on buying a new notebook until today because I wanted to see what apple was going to release! I badly wanted to "make the switch" from windows, and I have no real desire to buy the iBook (even if I am a college student). Hasn't it basically been a year since the last update?

i understand completely. if you really want/need a laptop and prefer it to be one made by apple i would suggest buying something just to get you by and just wait it out. its really all you can do if you need a laptop computer now and the one you really want isnt ready yet. just buy a windows laptop or a used apple laptop that will hold you over then sell it when the new powerbooks come out.

To people saying that the iMac needs a high-end gaming GPU: are hard-core gamers really clamoring for an all-in-one?

To be clear on the gaming issue, it's my guess that what (most) hard-core gamers REALLY want is not an iMac, but a mid-range headless (or high-end Mac Mini or low-end Power Mac). Cheaper/smaller than a PowerMac but with more power (and hopefully upgradable GPU) than the Mac Mini.

No such Mac exists now (I hope that changes), and Apple may be missing out on a huge untapped market of hard-core gamers. But I'm not sure the iMac was ever meant to be the Mac for them.
I've wondered why people seem to care so much that their computer is a Mac when gaming performance is such a high priority for them. Maybe it matters most to "medium-core" gamers... those who appreciate using a Mac for enough other things besides games yet don't want to feel "cheated" when they do play performance-demanding ones.

Meanwhile, for the rest of us gamers, the iMac just got a nice boost!
And the rev B iMac is still okay for this "rest of us" gamer. :)

Yes... that's how iMacs can be mounted on walls. ;) Get both... especially affordable if you purchase a refurb iBook. *drool*

No problem. The stand is meant to come off--in fact you can attach a wall mount, swing-arm, or any VESA mount via an adapter.

Speaking for myself: I care about gaming performance a lot--but I care about stability, security, and ease of use MORE. I also don't want to deal with (or carry, in the case of laptops) two computers. (As for choice of games--I can see it mattering to someone whose favorite is PC-only, but for me, there are more Mac games than I could ever buy or play anway.)

So here I am playing UT2004 on a PowerBook and loving it :)

If you go the the Apple Store you can get some great deals close out by scrolling down and clicking on the red sale tag... I have seen a couple 12" iBooks there for $649... that should get you by.

Make sure you've got all the correct power conversion stuff down before plugging it in abroad. I'm not sure if a U.S. iMac will have a power converter capable for overseas built-in, and IIRC there was a thread not too long ago about a guy who fried his G4 PM by plugging it in without the correct power conversion.

At least we have a good hint at what the PowerMac G5 update will be like ...

Should make that a nice machine also.

I'm still waiting for my 30" iMac to replace my tv. hehe :p

actually, I am waiting untill the iMac comes with a TV tuner, and has DVR capabilitys. Right now I am in a toss between an iMac and a Windows Media PC. I am not sure if I want to also purchase the third party apps and hardware from elgato.

Smart reasons, of course.

It's people who always gripe about the "wimpy GPU" (or whatever) with every upgrade that I'm not quite sure about, acting like it's up to Apple to satisfy their craving for more. And would the best even be good enough for some of them? ;)

Within a particular category they all kinda look the same to me nowadays. :)

That one's been tempting me for awhile ...

Which third-party apps?

Btw, in the Front Row tour it looked like on-screen name truncation might be a concern. That's one of the misfeatures with EyeHome; I'd really like to use a smaller font to reduce the truncation.

Has anyone noticed that they aren't charging anything to upgrade to 1gb of RAM?

Also shipping times have decreased to 3-5 days

What are you talking about? On both the 17" and 20" if I put I want 1GB of RAM, it increases the price by $100 on both.

"Professional computer customers" don't use iMacs. SJ is targeting exactly who he needs to target with a $1300-$1600 all-in-one CPU.

that was his point. he's saying that apple needs to focus on the pro line.
