Since I switched 2 years ago, I've wanted to buy every single new product that Apple has come out with. I don't think that this is going to be any different, and now that I have some money (no longer a college student) I hope that Apple can earn my money with this revision.

What I'm really hoping for is something that will handle some home theatre functionality. I know it's a long shot, but a guy can hope...

PS- I really don't want to be forced to have a Linux box running next to my tv, come on apple help me out.

Umm... the world's fingers and toes would be pretty close to 20x the number of people in the world... how are 20x the number of people in the world going to complain about G4 iMacs?

This doesn't sound like good news to me. It sounds like Apple is in trouble. They have no real computer offer between $1000 and $2000 for the next months. If you consider the fact that the iMac was very old and has been an even worse purchase ever since the eMac got upgraded, Apple will have no good offer between $1000 and $2000 for almost half a year!
No real computer?

how about the following:

The dual G4 PowerMac that still boots in Mac OS 9: $1499
The iBook at $1099, $1299, and $1499
The Powerbook G4 at $1599 and $1999
The eMac at $799 and $999 and when you add it up altogether fits right in the slot for $1000 to $2000.

No good offer? I guess you don't know how good the Mac models are.

This has got to be a low point for Apple.

A computer company that has to post a notice at it's online store saying they don't have actually have any computers to sell.

Sorry pal, no iMac's today, come back in the fall.

What was that Monte Python skit about the Cheese Shop, where they advertise 102 brands of cheese, but don't actually have any in the store?

Customer: I'd like a nice new iMac please.
Apple: Sorry, the last one's just gone out the door.
Customer: Ok, I'll just jump up to the Dual 2.5 G5
Apple: Well, you'll have to wait abit on that.
Customer: iPod mini?
Apple: Er, nope.
Customer: Apple Airport Express?
Apple: We're popping some more - not quite done yet.
Customer: Ok. I'll take one of those great looking new LCD displays.
Apple: Ummm, you see . .
Customer: New Nvidia Ultra graphics card?
Apple: Nada
Customer: Do you in fact have ANY new computer products in your store?
Apple: Let me get back to you on that . . . .

Customer: Apple branded PDA?
Apple: Cancelled that already . . .
Customer: 20th Anniversary Mac?
Apple: Well, we were tossing the idea around . . .
Customer: iPhone?
Apple: Not that again!
Customer: Mac OS X Tiger?
Apple: We already said NEXT year . . .
Customer: Can you in fact give a definite arrival date for any new stuff?
Apple: paris . . . imac . . .birthday . . . .

Really, and it just went down recently because Apple didn't announce a new iMac at WWDC, which some analysts were expecting. Now Apple announces they will have a major update coming up and the stock is driven down instead of up on the news. You'd think work of a major product update would have a good effect. Just another example of how cheated Apple is by Wallstreet.

You're damned if you do, damned if you don't in Cupertino

Cheated by Wall Street? Are you on crack?

Talk about an overpriced stock right now... Apple has been gloriously rewarded for its product announcements. Its P/E is70.22!!!!!!!

I can scarcely think of few hotter, more overhyped stocks right now.

eMacs are all in one! I've got one right in front of me that I'm typing this to you on. It has an LCD screen too! I think it's LCD? No, maybe its CRT. Oh well, I can't even tell the difference...

Good News and Bad News

The bad news first.

Apple will not be releasing a G5 iMac this year. Sorry, not going to happen.

Good news, Apple is releasing a 23" iMac and new 20" iMac with the new displays.

Sorry, but someone needed to end all of this.

Dam you can't even tell the difference those CRT's have fried your eyes and brain. lol ;) :p :D

No. No, No, NO. Read about this subject before repeatedly suggesting this!

I am aware of the engineering problems and I know that a detachable tablet is unlikely. However, my larger point was just what you acknowledged: they need something dramatic.

Here is where I get into an argument with people but I assure you that I know of which I speak: consumers have PLENTY of power ALREADY in their home PCs. Processor speed no longer drives the majority of PC sales and even a tinier fraction of Mac sales.

A G5 iMac at 1299-2199 is not going to sell any better than the current (absolutely beautiful) G4 iMac. Apple has two choices if they want the iMac to sell in the kind of numbers that the original G3 model did:

1. Lower the price drastically
This scenario is unlikely for several reasons. The most important one being the cannibalization of eMac sales. Also, from a product placement standpoint, the iMac prices have to stay about the same. There is no other place for them in the Apple line up. Go too high-end and you harm power mac sales, go any lower...you get the idea. Finally, this is Apple we're talking about. They've never gone dirt cheap and its unrealistic to think they'll start now.

2. A dramatic design improvement
And I mean dramatic. The current iMac flat panel was about as well designed and elegant a computer as you could ever hope for. It also offered a flat panel display when they were still relatively rare and expensive. Even with those design improvements, the G4 iMac never approached the sales of the G3 bubble-butt. The new iMac will need some design-based improvement in functionality that will really *wow* everyone.

I have no idea what the new iMac will be but I do know this: if its just a pretty new enclosure with a G5, they needn't have bothered. Consumers will not care.

Screw the iMac G3, G4, G5. I want an iMacBOT or a MacBOT

with AutoMatic who wants a computer I want one with "AI" and it can physically beat the crap out of a PC box screw the bench marks :p ;) :D

Apple's problem is that they never have enough supply to meet their demand. Never. Somehow other companies always have enough supply to meet their demand, and their demand is quite large compared to Apple. I love Apple to death, but if they want to grow out of their niche, they have to stock a whole lot more product than they do right now. A whole lot more. And this needs to be for each and every product that they sell! Some people don't mind waiting for a month for a computer. Some people can't wait that long.

Apple did the right thing. It's going to be a long 3 months, man...

They did the right thing? They screwed up and were FORCED to admit it. The only other option was stop taking orders for no reason and turn away customers without any explanation.

Too Much Speculation

First, to all those who asked why the iMac didn't debut at the WWDC, realize that the WWDC is not yet over; it ends July 2, i.e., tomorrow. Perhaps there will be some sort of clarification tomorrow regarding the iMac situation.

Second, there is NOTHING to suggest that a G5 chip will make its way into September's iMacs.

Third, and most important, Apple does NOT indicate that the iMac will have a redesign. It uses the words "next generation." This phrase merely indicates that an upgrade is coming. While a redesign is possible, and it is something for which I greatly hope, the indicator is just not there.

Another problem I have is this: people constantly refer to Apple as a "mom and pop" company, wherein Steve Jobs is the friendly owner who exerts complete control. Apple is a large, publicly-traded corporation. The fact that it does not hold "evil" status as does Microsoft does not preclude it from seeking a profit. We are all stakeholders, and the company aims to please stockholders. Steve Jobs does very well to project an "everyman" status, and as a result we feel like he designs and approves every project Apple undertakes. The fact is, however, that he has many people working under him, and that he has to answer to a number of people. We love Apple's products, but we have to realize that it too is a faceless corporation. Mr. Jobs has done a very good job of bringing a face to the company, as people in these forums affectionately refer to him as "Stevie" and "Steve-o." But let's not forget that Apple's primary aim to is make profits, not to amuse us with leaks and screenshots.

Sorry to bring everybody down, but I was getting tired of reading blind speculation and numerous apologies for Apple. Hopefully the next few weeks prove me very wrong.

Just to clarify, I'm a born-again Mac user who also loves Apple. The heat must be what's making me disagreeable.

Why i think the iMac has to use a G5:

The G4 chips are only used by Apple. Motorolla is making these just for Apple. they are developing and advancing these just for Apple. How long will they keep this up? How long can the G4 be counted on to be kept updated to current speed standards? Sure the new G4s (~1.5ghz) would be fine for the first generation new iMac but will the G4 reach 2ghz anytime soon? or ever? I think the iMac needs to go G5 to get off the possibly sinking boat of the G4. And then a year later the Powerbook and then 2 years later the iBook and eMac.
