A 32” display would need to use a 6K panel to maintain proper Retina resolution and scaling. Such panels are still somewhat exotic and expensive, and would make it difficult for Apple to keep the costs down
5K/6K/etc panels are exotic and expensive specifically *because* only macOS needs them. There is not enough demand and not enough manufacturers interested to get involve.

If Apple improved the fractional scaling ability of macOS, Apple would be able to offer more cost-effective display products - I think there are lots of users who are used to non-Retina behavior in other OS or won't notice the absence of Retina resolution.

Yes... MacOS would be so much better if Apple would add proper 1.5x scaled UI elements. The fact that 4K displays suck for MacOS is really dumb.

Wonder if there will even be a M2 ultra chip?.. or if it doesn't show up till in a Mac Studio in 6+ months, so the Mac Pro has some performance edge over the MS? Apple's roll outs seems like a crap shoot these days, at least if any of these Mac Pro/iMac/Mac Studio rumours are true. We're already talking about M3 products being announced at WWDC, before the M2 line up is even done, M2 Max isn't even 2 months old.. so messy.

Okay I'm in for one of these. If they come out in the back half of '23, even better cause it gives me more time to prepare for the expensive config I'm gonna order. I'm so glad they're not changing the colors, I must have the orange one to add to my collection!

I told you. Apple is the new Microsoft. Can’t innovate so they just upgrade the processor and everyone gets excited.

I still haven’t seen anyone with this iMac. No where. I’d love to see the units sold data.

I’ve needed an iMac for 6 years. I waited for the new iMac 27” but we got this crayon instead. I still didn’t get an iMac. I just bought a bigger monitor and connected my MacBook Pro to it.

We all know when they release the larger iMac it’ll be so over priced that I won’t get it then either. Cook has made it so unpleasant for customers to just get a damn computer they want and need.
I have a friend who has one. He's pretty happy with it.

There is no reason why these things shouldn’t have Face ID. Pure laziness
Pure laziness or Apple is trying to save money as always. I don’t understand.. why Apple acts so cheap. It’s the most valuable company in the world. Why cut cheap corners? Sometimes Apple acts like they are going bankrupt within a year or so. Or simply act like a new start-up company. Makes zero sense!

I don't know what Mark Gurman is talking about. Apple would never skip M2 on the iMac. Their product lines are going to follow a consistent path.
If Apple rushed and released the M3, they would disrupt their next 3-4 year timeline. The M3 will be delayed and very slowly rolled out, just like M1 and M2.
Seriously, we have M2 Pro now, but the iPad Air just got the base M1.

Build your own compatible iMac but with easy change computer box or screen.

Mac M2Pro mini fully loaded $4,499
Studio Display with VESA $1,599
Total system $6,098

If either device fails, the other part should still be okay.

I have never seen a U-Haul following a hearse. Sp spend a little and get a viable system good for many years.

They just won't do a 27inch iMac because they are afraid it will cannibalise sales of the Studio Display. So annoying. My next desktop will probably be a Mac mini M2 with a third part display. Studio display is too expensive here on OZ.

Good! If they were going to have a 27 inch or greater I’d be pissed about buying a Studio Mac last November.

The news of iMac skipping the M2 and going directly to M3 has been going on for months--it's not new. There is talk of the next iPad Pro getting M3 as well.

You are assuming previous pricing onto this 27" iMac resurrection. If they had this actual fear, they could price it accordingly. Studio + Studio Display = approx. (starting at) $4K. iMac Pro "bigger" (starting at) $4K. All cannibalizing concepts can be addressed with price adjustments.

Personally, I have good expectations of the return of an iMac "bigger"... but I think it will have a shockingly higher price than the iMac 27" pricing to which we are all accustomed. Why?
  1. Take Studio Display now pretty much established at about $2K with a stand option. That's the entire price of what was the same display and case that also had a Mac in there.
  2. ADD a whole iMac-like Mac (guts) inside that display. A good proxy would be to assume the MBpro 14" guts and added price sans whatever you want to deduct for the screen, speakers and battery.
  3. Apple being Apple probably puts the PRO suffix on it (actually means PROfit, not PROfessional ;) )
Tadah! iMac "bigger" probably starting at about $3500... and about $4500+ "nicely equipped." Look back to 27" iMac Pros for pricing precedent. Get the fans rationalizing it by starting with SD price and then adding in a whole Mac to it. This is my best guess for how an iMac "bigger" returns to the lineup... pretty much iMac Pro V2 with Silicon.

I doubt it. M3 wont be ready until A17 is ready cause they all are 3nm based chips.

A year ago this news would had me pee my paints of excitement, almost.
Then the Studio and ASD came to my desk. Perfect!
What exactly was the excitement of iMac? None to me at this time.

Don't take me wrong I had a few, and I loved them for the convenience of the all-in-one Mac's.
But I'm personally very happy that Apple went back to releasing separate Macs and displays.
Won't hurt Apple to release iMac's too. They are enough grown up to have all sorts of solution to offer their customers.

Will be fun to see if there is any meat to this rumor.

32 inch would have been such a breath of fresh air. But I guess the fear of cannibalizing other product lines is now a thing at Apple.
I don’t understand why people think this? The iMac doesn’t cannibalize anything.

The M3 isn’t rushed. M1 and M2 were slowly rolled out. 3nm has been in production for awhile now.

If you look at Apple's strategy, the MBA's at the company drove the decision how the product line should drive more expensive purchase decisions. Instead of buying a 27 inch AIO, you can actually get more from the potential buyer with a Mac Mini M2 Pro and Apple Studio Display. So, instead of spending 1,699, you end up spending 2,900. Even better if you can get that customer up to a Mac Studio.
