Apple's next iMac has reached an "advanced stage of development,"

[..]

the same 24-inch display size and color options as the current model.

[..]

expects the new iMac to be released in the second half of 2023 at the earliest.

Huh?

It has the same design and size, and a newer SoC. It’s at least half a year away. It’s “in the advanced stage of development”. What exactly are they “developing”? The price tag?

This rumor makes no sense. If there were major changes, it might. But if all it is is a speed bump, it doesn’t need any “development” that takes over two years.

In a hypothetical world where I have money, I would like to see two changes.
a) 27 inch version in addition to the 24.
b) have the front colors match the rear ones. You know, the actual beautiful color of the two.

Yup. A minimally-bezeled 32" iMac would be only slightly larger in form factor than the 27" iMac. Seems like a no brainer. A 27" display isn't "big" like it used to be.
But that means apple would have to take a hit in their multimillion dollar profit margins.

If you remember, Jobs battle with the board before he was fired was exactly this. Profit margins vs people need this product at an affordable price.

Cook thinks the same way as the board from then, if not, he is a puppet of the board. Everything regarding Apple is $ related now.

Customers can’t afford it because of $.
Apple raises prices because of “costs” but they still take home just as much as before.
Any new product that customers want gets the Ultra or Pro Max bs title so they can raise the price by another $300.

So if you want the “affordable” products, you need to pay the Apple Tax for an outdated product.

If you want the current up to date product, you pay the Apple Double Tax making it over priced and too expensive.

So they want to launch an M3 iMac after a M2 Mac Pro??
They launched the base M2 (M2 Air, July 15, 2022) four months after the M1 Ultra (M1 Studio, March 18, 2022). So if they launch the M3 iMac four months after the M2 Ultra Mac Pro, they'll be doing the exact same thing.

More broadly, their progression within a generation appears to be from the simplest chips to the most complex. Thus, if they keep to this pattern, the lowest-end chip of the next generation (in this case, M3) would be expected to launch after the fanciest chip of the current generation (the M2 Ultra expected in the Mac Pro).

Not saying they will, but that's what we've seen thus far.

If possible, what they really should do with the upcoming Mac Pro is give it more per-core performance by increasing the clocks (on both the CPU and GPU). The MP case has more than enough cooling to accommodate this. If they can do this sufficiently, even if it is an M2 Ultra, it could have faster per-core performance than the base M3 chip.

I wonder if it'll get the Pro version of the M series chip. I miss my M1 iMac. It was the best looking Mac I've owned and the screen was outstanding!... That screen ruined me 🤣
Probably not. The M1 iMac was designed with the thermals of the base M1 in mind. The pro (and above) would have needed more space and more ventilation. We don't know about the M3 yet, so all we can do is speculate, but the M3-pro will surely run hotter than the M3

Why Apple just doesn’t stick the iMac guts w/m2 Pro/Max processors inside the Studio Dislay is just beyond me.
There’ a boatload of room inside-they could even put the friggin’ Superdrive back in.
Voila, new 27” iMac!

I still think that was the original plan, but then they decided to do the Mac Studio.

Notice how over-engineered the Studio Display is for a monitor. It has two fans, a big power supply, plenty of external I/O support, etc... This was definitely going to be the next 27" iMac. Also, the funky proprietary power plug is probably the result of them deciding not to go with an eternal brick but already having the chassis design set up for the same magnetic connector the 24" iMac uses. Look at the shape of the opening.

In a way, it was a better decision for Apple to finally create a high powered desktop Mac at a lower price point than the Mac Pro. But they could have done that AND also sold a 27" iMac. The only people who know why aren't speaking up.

I've been waiting to upgrade from 27" to 32". If it's going to be 27" again (like the intel iMacs) or just an interior bump to the 21", I'll wait another 2-3 years. Not going to buy the 21" ever and would like to try and avoid getting a 27" if possible.

I wish Apple would make a 24" Studio Display (with DisplayPort and buttons that support Windows). I would give up my 165hz refresh rate and fast response times for such a monitor in a (slightly pained) heartbeat.

Apple's next iMac has reached an "advanced stage of development," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his newsletter today, Gurman said the new iMac will have the same 24-inch display size and color options as the current model.

Hello-Tim-Cook-iMac.jpeg

The new iMac will likely include Apple's upcoming M3 chip, internal design changes, and a new manufacturing process for the stand, according to Gurman. The M3 chip will reportedly be manufactured based on Apple chipmaking partner TSMC's latest 3nm process for additional performance and power efficiency improvements.

Apple last updated the iMac in April 2021 with the M1 chip and an ultra-thin enclosure available in seven colors, including green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. It is currently the only iMac in Apple's lineup, as the Intel-based 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro were both discontinued within the past two years. Gurman previously claimed that a larger iMac could return, but he did not share any new info about that possibility today.

Gurman expects the new iMac to be released in the second half of 2023 at the earliest.

Not until they're updated with at least Mini-LED or OLED will I purchase one. The backlight bleed on these models is horrible for me.

Won't M1 Pro/Max Mac Studios be more "powerful" than base M2/M3/M4/M5/M6/etc? I think people are getting hung up on the numeric generation

Depends on the task. An M2 is only 7% faster at single-core and 28% slower at multi-core. But the M3 will narrow that gap, and somewhere around the M4 or M5, they'll probably surpass the M1 Max.

ZERO interest in a new 24-in iMac.

Would buy a 32-in (or bigger) iMac in a heartbeat.
Exactly. Would have upgraded my 2017 27 inch iMac last year. 24 inch (or any other Mac) is not being considered at all. Still waiting and hoping. 32 inch would be even better.

Maybe what we really want is a 32 inch Studio Display. Pair that with a M2 Pro Mac Mini and I would be happy.

If they don’t come out with a 27 inch screen or larger iMac then I couldn’t care less.

There is no current 21 or 21.5 iMac.

A 24in. Studio Display would be somewhat more affordable than the current version.
27 inch iMac. Did Apple forget about the imac 27 loyal users
Perhaps there aren’t enough of them.
Wonder what the sales distribution is on the colours. What is most popular to the least? Would be fun to know
That would be interesting to know.

Since this is probably coming only out of Mark Gurman's head, I would disbelieve it if it wasn't for the fact that the M1 iMac is getting pretty old now and Apple probably just wants to move everything up to M2. M2 Mac Studio will probably be next.
