New iMacs Next Week?

I hope so, but there will probably not a quad core option, because that would put it performance wise even farther above the MBP, and almost in line with the low end Mac Pro. At least, that's what I think, but I could very easily be wrong.

Now, I pour my wine, and I toast, here's to hoping your dead wrong, cheers.

I think this rumour is fake. What the h**k does a girly gossip site know about manly stuff like computers?

yeah man, computers are so masculine... mine grows chest hair and is balding...

---------

ok so alot of people are all "no, bluray will be on MacPro first before anything else"... this might be true if we're talking about a bluray burner... however, a simple bluray player IS more suitable for consumer macs than pro macs...

One extra reason to wait for updated hardware

Waiting could be wise especially for europeans, because Apple corrects dollar-euro exchange rate only when new items come to store, like recent MB/MBPro updates. So additionally to specs bumps, also about 100€ price drops for Europe could be expected.

I'm waiting for a Mac Mini update to get the new X3100 GPU. In fact, that's the only thing that I'm waiting for and that's what's pissing me off!
I don't get it. I don't see why Apple makes updates or upgrades such a big deal. There are new technologies all the time. It would be as simple as following what's going on and adapting. They should be updating their products every 3 to 4 months!
I've read somewhere why they don't: start with top of line technology, let it get cheaper to make larger margin at the end of the cycle. Yeah, I get it. But it's a bad approach for the consumer and to some extent for Apple. They are seen (at least by this community) to sell outdated products (look at the 20" iMac screen scandal) until they are pushed to update or upgrade.
Why make us wait? Get an updated product out every 3 to 4 months, people would buy them WITHOUT the wait and we wouldn't feel like PCs are always one head in front until that major upgrade!
If the iMac gets and update now and another in 3 months, I say that's the way to go. It should be updated more often anyway.

So when would they be in the shops?

So say for example the update did drop this coming Tuesday? When would the new models be physcially in the store? I actually want to buy mine from the local store here in Cambridge (UK) and just wondering would they be in from the time of the announcment or would it take a few days / weeks?

Nige

Okay, now this is interesting... Why would Apple update the iMacs now when the Montevina chipset is just 5 weeks away from being released?

Have Intel given them dibs on the new technology? Or is Apple not planing on switching to Montevina until the autumn?
My thinking is that Apple delayed the iMac update so they could get it back on a semi-regular, and not so long, update schedule. This update will have the dual-core Penryn on Santa Rosa. The fall update will move the iMac to the Montevina platform with at least a BTO option for a quad-core Penryn and the Q2 2009 update will have the Calpella platform with quad-core Nehalem standard for the entire iMac line.

i know its gonna be a small speed bump
but isnt the imac still gonna be behind cause theyre still gonna be running Dual Cores?

right now u can get dell quad cores for around 500.....
i know its different cause youre comparing desktop/laptop hardware but still
if im paying 1500 dollars for a desktop, ibetter get something dam good

maybe i should get the mini instead?

I wonder if Apple is waiting for better H.264 hardware decoders. Most computers can't decode 1080p24 from the disc at the insane bit rates it is encoded at without dropping frames with no help from the GPU (or decoder of some sort). Since Apple has this aversion to using GPU decoding maybe they are waiting on some other unit to do the heavy lifting (plus none of the current Macbooks and Minis have any sort of H.264 acceleration).

i'd like to see either built in or an option for a superdrive which will also play Blu-Ray movies.

also an option on this for burning them as well

What are you talking about? The Radeon HD2xxx series has hardware decoding of H.264. I just got a HD2400 Pro for my HTPC, and I now can actually watch 720p H.264 video without losing frames or the audio and video getting out of sync.

I don't know about 1080p though, haven't tried that on either the HTPC or my new iMac.

As far as if the rumor is true, I'm wondering if there's an easy way to back up my iMac's HD (including the Boot Camp partition, so Time Machine wouldn't help there, right?) Has anybody successfully used Disk Utility or another program to image a Boot Camp partition from one HD and then to another?

720p isn't as hard on the CPU. With the help of a GPU it is nothing at all. What I was getting at is Apples lack of using the GPU for that kind of acceleration. And it is probably for a good reason. The Macbook and the Mac Mini lack the acceleration required to make BD playback worth it. Apple doesn't strike me as the company that would keep a consumer feature from being used on the most popular consumer notebook they sell.

I don't see a problem with that. That's like saying it shouldn't have a bigger screen than the MBP. It's a desktop device. It doesn't have the same power concerns as a laptop. It should be more powerful!

Wake me when they put a Blu-ray drive in them

I'd settle for a reader at this stage. Discs are too expensive to write.

Even the local Aldi supermarket sells a PC with a BD & HD-DVD READ drive in it.

Wake up Apple.

Agree. Except for the video. MBP is more expensive *mainly* because of it's footprint.
And other items like battery, backlit keyboard, trackpad and anything else that makes it not a desktop machine. The two computers share some stuff, but the iMac is pretty bare bones compared to a laptop.

Well I'd be surprised if the iMac received Montevina before the MacBook Pro did, so if it does ship next week, I am guessing it will remain with the current Santa Rosa systemboard and just moving to Penryn CPUs which only offer a bit more speed. I can't see them changing the GPU because there would be no reason to change the systemboard - Penryn's will drop right in. So it's the same iMac as today with a slightly faster CPU and a larger HDD.

If this is true, I'd be disappointed if I was looking to buy an iMac. :(

And as for Blu-ray, laptop slimline slot-loaded readers are over $300. Even as a BTO option, that's a serious wad of cash so I can see why Apple is holding off. They can use the 5.25" units in the Mac Pro, which are significantly cheaper, so I expect it to show up there first, hopefully with the Nehalem upgrade and hopefully both by Mac World 2009.

 What this iMac update needs 

Wants - More Likely
•Penryn processor (too early for Montivena)
•Matte screen option
•Matching keyboard and mouse (Aluminum and black like everything else Apple these days)
•Magnetic or other mount for remote

Wants - Less Likely
•Backlit keyboard like the MacBook Pro
•Support for more RAM
•Blu-ray (ain't going to happen)
•HDMI port

Optional - New Apple peripheral
•Apple needs to sell a USB or Bluetooth mulitouch trackpad that can be used in place of a mouse and that would support gestures. Much more realistic than a multitouch screen and more practical to use.

720p is good enough for me. Honestly, unless you're sitting directly in front of a small screen (like a laptop/desktop monitor) or have a ridiculously huge and expensive flat panel TV, I don't think most people can even tell the difference. Heck, lots of people probably can't tell the difference between an upscaled standard definition DVD and a HD or Blu-Ray DVD.
