29 inch IMac

I may be a newbie, but I have checked in several times to see whats going in the world of Mac. I have it on high authority that a new 29 inch IMac is on the way. It makes sense as the company is now going to offer a 29 High Def monitor tying into all the new media available on Itunes. Look out Sony...

I hope the new iMacs have trackpad instead of a mouse.

Uhm, Not that its a horrible idea, but i prefer a mouse, as im sure most people do, and i think it illogical to incorporate a trackpad with the keyboard which is not an iMac...

being excited about a top of the line iMac is like being excited about a top of the line Honda civic.

Yeah, but the same could be said about being excited about a new MBP, (which some people took to the extreme on this forum) there are people that are just not interested at all in yet another laptop computer but they are more excited about a new desktop. It depends on who needs what? In this case your opinion holds no matter.

Your parents should look for a new computer support person.

Clearly their current one is incompetent if the only solution is to reformat bi-weekly.

Most likely the PC has a bad chip of ram if it needs reformatted that often.

An illogical idea is to have a Multi-Touch screen the size of a 20-24" iMac.

Multi-Touch on a small screen has its purpose, however it does not translate well to a larger screen. Imagine the hand/arm movement(s).

A trackpad/multi-touch is similar to having a Graphic Tablet. Now that would come in handy for many graphic artists. :)

Not necessarily, but a computer as an iMac is now, is illogical. It would probably fall a lot too.

It is my opinion, but I think if you look around the Web, you'll see sufficient evidence that there are a lot of problems with the quality of the iMac displays. There are widespread reports of color shifts, yellow casts, decreased viewing angles compared to other displays on the market, the glossy screen causing problems for people with sensitivity to glare and more. None of these were issues with the previous generation iMacs so it's a little hard to defend it. I don't own one, but I've seen them many times in person and have talked to many people who owned (and some who returned) them and can readily confirm that these problems exist. For some people, that's not going to be a big deal, but many of us have higher expectations from Apple and refuse to accept shoddy quality from them.

Does it really matter what's been said about the current iMac's screens on the web if the person sitting in front of it in their own home likes the way it looks? Sheesh.
Also the person sitting in front of their own iMac that likes the screen the way it is has plenty to defend, who are you to tell them they don't have much to defend? You don't even own one.

If it's the same card as what's in it now.. that's not a update that's a joke.

A joke is the colour scheme of the Al iMac (Al with Black) paired with a Al KB (AL and White) and a White MM.

Is it so hard for :apple: to either make the keys on the Al KB silver or black and same with the MM, to colour coordinate with the Al iMac look. And this is from a company that toots design and functionality.

And all the Black rim around the screen is to hide the iSight, please.

The iMac is basically a desktop with laptop components (except HDD) and an integrated PSU. If there is any chance it will become a massive 20-24" tablet you will have to put the iMac on a major diet, make it as thin as possible and able to run off a battery. These things will not happen. Even it the iMac was thin and light enough and place on a desktop on an angle it would still be odd for people to use it for longer than 30 min at a time, due to the unnatural head and hand position while usage.

I don't think i was ever fighting about a tablet or the iMac at all. But hey, I guess i am now!! But i agree with you...argument over. :)

I really DO hope they get rid of those crappy TN panels and go to AT LEAST an MVA/PVA panel, with an IPS being ideal. Or at least have an option to "upgrade" to them and keep the TN standard.

My business is looking to get a couple new Macs to replace our ancient (in Graphic Designer/Production years) 5-year-old single-core 1.8GHz G5's, but the budget doesn't allow for Mac Pro's. Thus, we'd LIKE to get iMacs, but with the crappy TN screens where we need accurate color, it doesn't look likely... Instead, they are thinking of getting refurbished old Macs -- which would also mean we'd have to keep our also-ancient 19" CRT's...

PLEASE APPLE!!! :apple:

I totally agree. I hate the fact that my Macbook has a TN panel. Here is a comparison for anyone who is interested.

While everything else is a vast improvement over my last computer, an eMac, the eMac did have a vastly superior display.

Ehh? All (Apple) laptops have TN screens

the current iMac (as well as the previous gen white iMac) is a perfectly good computer...don't feel the need to upgrade lol. most likely will be a spec bump. What else can they do to the thing? definitely not a redesign.

Yes, perfectly good.

Since everyone else is trying to guess what the updates will be here's my go at it.

You wont see the new intel processor and you sure wont see blueray.

I think they will simply up the current specs a bit.

In short I think the 2.0 model will go away and the current 2.4 20 inch will be the new lower end model. If we are lucky it will get 2 gig's of ram and a video card update.

I think the high end 20 inch and the low end 24 inch will use the 2.8 processor with 2 gigs of ram and again hopefully a better video card.

The high end 24 inch will get bumped up to 3.0 processor with a bigger HD and 2 gigs of ram and of course the hopeful video card upgrade.

I think it's highly unlikely Apple would get their hands on enough of these new CPU's to launch a new model, specially before they are on the market.

I think you will see a mild update, then a second one a little later in the year or beginning of next with a 4 core by then.

I also think the current refurb prices will likely stay the same.. The only reason I'm holding out and not buying the refurb just yet, is because if they make the 2.4 the low end model it will be a better buy vs a refurb. ( I just can't see them offering a refurb under $999)

I just don't see them putting in a penryn for 8-12 weeks.
If they use a Penryn (most likely) it won't be for 8-12 weeks, it will be in the iMac until January 2009. Then a new model will be released. Look at the history of updates....

8/2007
9/2006
1/2006
10/2005
5/2005
8/2004
11/2003
9/2003
2/2003

They usually don't come all that quick.

Does anybody we will see the introduction of blu-ray this summer? I think by wwdc we will here something.
You won't see BluRay anything on a Mac until Final Cut Studio is updated and seeing as how Apple skipped NAB (the place to release it) my educated guess is that ain't gonna happen until 2009.

...a quad core option, supports 2 4gb chips of ram, and has at least the 8800gt 512mb...
I'm with 'ya on the hopes of a quad iMac and a 512mb graphics card. I wish, I wish, I wish.... My guess is it will simply be a larger HD with a 3.0 chip on the high end. I'd really like that quad/512 though!
