Also the person sitting in front of their own iMac that likes the screen the way it is has plenty to defend, who are you to tell them they don't have much to defend?

I'm not telling people what they can and cannot like. Can you quote me where I say anything like that? If you want to discuss this topic, don't put words in my mouth. :mad:

I've been using and buying Macs for 15+ years. I can see with my own eyes that the displays in the current iMacs are amongst the worst quality displays Apple has ever put out. More importantly, they are visibly worse that the quality of the displays on the previous generation iMacs.

I recently compared the 24" and 20" side-by-side at a local Apple reseller. The quality issues jumped out at me from both displays, but were considerably more apparent in the 20" model. If it's not obvious to others, so be it. To me and many others with apparently more discerning eyes, it's shockingly obvious.

You don't even own one.:rolleyes:

And why do you think that is? I still have a 700Mhz G4 iMac on my desk in front of me that I've been itching to replace over the last 6 months, but until Apple can put out a display that is equal to or better than the 6-year-old LCD sitting in front of me, I'll stay put. Barring that, they could also put out a headless Mac that doesn't cost $2700 and allow me to buy a third-party display. Sadly, they don't appear capable of recognizing the obvious direction they should go next with their desktop machines.

Clearly their current one is incompetent if the only solution is to reformat bi-weekly.

Most likely the PC has a bad chip of ram if it needs reformatted that often.

... and the support tech is incompetent in not realizing that he needs to check for simple to fix hardware issues, rather than constantly reformatting then recommending a new machine.

Bad RAM would also be my first guess, then check the S.M.A.R.T logs on the disk, then motherboard firmware updates.

But incompetent tech support is obvious.

5 Things I'd Like To See on Updated iMac.... But Probably Won't:

1. Non-gloss screen option

2.
The return of the magnetic remote in black or silver.

3.
More powerful graphics card

4. Montevina chip set

5. Blu-Ray capability

Ah well.

lol what are you talking about?

512 MB adds nothing to the performance of this card and Mac Pro's 2600 XT is much faster than iMac's

That's what I'm saying, a move to 512 mb wouldn't be an upgrade, they'd need to move to the XT or the 3000 series.

But since there were 3000 series drivers for the Mac Pro, the iMac could possibly get the 2600XT and the Mac Pro may have its base card changed to the 3000 series.

This would just be logical, but it probably won't happen.

BEST analogy I've ever read on this forum. Seriously, why are people so hyped about a slight processor bump or extra HDD space? It's not like it'll matter much or make your existing iMac not as great. Do people really think they'll notice a .2ghz processor increase at best? Or will you really care about a slightly larger hard drive? No, so just enjoy your current mac. All technology will be replaced. You must as well be happy with yours.

Because that particular attitude (or "hype"), fuels the economy.

And this after :apple: is reporting billion(s) in profit revenue. :rolleyes:

True, but many of us, myself included, say the AIR might go the way of the cube and yesterdays numbers showed this to be true - its just not selling.

For once, Apple might have to go against the grain - the movie industry is all BLUE RAY, and PC's are BR, so, they might have to make the jump and offer it, without leaping small, they might have to leap big.

The other problem that some of us (pro's included) (me too), is that we don't make up a larger % of market share - so, time for apple to get away from the notion that we would FLOCK to cheap laptops and minis if they had BLUE RAY and a kickin' graphics card. So what! They need to do this. Focus more on gaming (huge market) and Blue Ray, so what if a few straglers go to the cheap systems for motion/maya/final cut! We don't bring them all the top dollars anyway. They would make more selling gaming rigs that they ever would worrying about us using a cheap mac book for motion. In fact, I would bet to say, many editors would buy maybe two for travel - no need to worry about the $2500 MBP when you could do the same for $1000.00 and if it got lost, not that HUGE of a deal. Plus, imagine if you could tap into these cheap systems as rendering farms. How sweet would that be?

The next revolution, and feel free to quote me, will be in the streaming entertainment business. In fact, networks/cable will take a hit the way the music biz did once PIPED FIBER is in every house as everyone will broadcast a show and some will be very, very, good.

Time to make it happen Apple - don't worry about the small % of Pro users - - make a great machine and bring 4 cores to laptops (soon) and 16 to the Mac Pro -
:apple:

I was going to get a 24" iMac this weekend till I saw this thread on Thursday. Now I'll wait till Tuesday in hopes of getting a bigger HD. The speed increase I really don't care about. The HD space I do since I have been buying lots of TV show seasons on iTunes.

I had bough my 20" iMac barely two months ago knowing that a newer one may be out soon but now that I also want a 24", waiting a few days to see what is changed won't matter. I will also still use my 20" just as much.

I'm no electronics engineer, but a single white LED is going to have a power consumption of all of what... milliWatts ?

I'm not that fussed about it functionally - it doesn't add a whole lot to a desktop.. or a laptop for that matter. If it's sleeping you can wake it up by pressing the standby button.. if it's been shut down you do the same, but it's cute. Kinda like slow rhythmic breathing you get when people sleep. :D

People are complaining about the TN panels in iMacs, but I was under the impression that only the 20" had a TN panel and that the 24" had a H-IPS panel. Is that not true?

Feels like I've been waiting to upgrade my >2 year old mini forever. The disk is full to bursting but I keep holding on for the next update.

Hopefully either one or more happens in this update:

1. Option for Glossy or Matte screen; and (or)
2. Standard or Option for a better Video Card; maybe
3. A 30" iMac.

Not a big fan of the Al/Black combo prefer an Al/White or Silver tone. Nõ real reason for me to upgrade just yet. This 24" White iMac fits the bill quite right. :D

I'm guessing it will be a minimal update (HD and processor speed). Video card may be updated but not to the extent Mac fans would happy with.

FINALLY REAL MAC RUMORS!!! This is just what I am gonna need before taking the plunge and buying a brand new iMac..! GO APPLE!

Basic wishlist:

Penryn procs;
2Gb RAM standard;
Bigger HD;
Updated GPU (even if just slightly).

Here is to new iMacs next week!!! :D

Should the update happen Tuesday, this is all that is happening.

All this Quad-Core (which Intel has not released yet), Blu-Ray, 30" nonesense is not going to happen. In relation to the 30", Apple only debuts new products at Apple Events. None are scheduled for Tuesday. It is going to be the most minor iMac upgrade in a long time, albeit welcome and several months behind the times since Montevina is around the corner.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

Good, can't wait to see. I hope this one is true. Hopefully a quad core option at the top end.

When the 24" was first introduced in the iMac lineup, it was just a simple online announcement.

I hope so, but there will probably not a quad core option, because that would put it performance wise even farther above the MBP, and almost in line with the low end Mac Pro. At least, that's what I think, but I could very easily be wrong.
