As much as I want to like the new iMac's, I just can't get around the black on the front of the screen... it looks really out of place to me. Aside from that, they're beautiful, but that black band is so prominent..

new iMacs in your Apple Store?

Am I the only one whose local Apple Store does not curently stock the new iMacs? I was just in today and they had zero on display, zero in stock. What's worse is they were still shamelessly selling the previous version at full prices. They were happy to tell me all the details of the new iMacs, and would even order one for me; but no discount whatsoever on the ones in-store (excluding my corporate discount...).

Well i love the new iMac. I've been waiting since March. I ordered My 20" 2.4 with 2 gigs of ram,ATi 256 graphics card and 320gig Hard drive. I was so damn happy until they told me it would be September 12th before it's shipped!!! I just can't win. Well anyway at least it's a done deal just a little more waiting! I was going to get a iPod also but will wait to see if new one comes around with Leopard.:D

Only two things delay the iMacs more than 5 days...(1) 1TB drive-3 weeks (2) bluetooth keyboard - 3-5 weeks.

I cant wait that long so i ordered the 2.8 24" with 750gig and the regular keyboard...ill just pick up the bluetooth one when they come out...

I just got back from my Apple store and looked at the new 20/24" iMacs. I have to say that 24" is nice. There was a glare for sure, but it didn't drive me crazy. It was mostly due to the overhead lighting in the store and some of the lights along the top edge of the wall about 20 ft. behind me. So depending on the lighting in your particular room you MAY have glare issues. Although tilting the screen forward/backward could help to minimize that.

After all the negative talk about the black trim I found myself not even noticing it. I think it actually just made the screen stand out more if anything. I didn't mind it when I first saw the pictures online and during Steve's presentation, but the more I read I was starting to side with the negative thoughts. Now I don't mind it again.

The keyboard isn't THAT bad. I've never used the keyboard on a Mac Book before, but now I know how it is. It didn't bother me, but it's definitely a little different than my MBP keyboard and Kensington keyboard I use at my desk. I read about some people having a lot of typing mistakes and not being able to find keys. I loaded up an online typing website in the store that had you type whatever was on the screen and it would tell you your WPM and accuracy. I did 3x two minute tests all with different paragraphs to copy. My first test ended up at 40 WPM (didn't catch the accuracy) and my third came back at 58 WPM with 96% accuracy. The accuracy issues were completely mine since I'm not used to copying pre-written material while being timed. So, I call bunk on the keyboard being much harder to use. After all, the little bumps on the "F" and "J" keys still exist so you know where your pointer fingers should be.

New iMac and RAM

I saw in the presentation that there is only one screw to remove to get to the RAM. I am planning on buying a new 24" iMac when Leopard comes out and I would like it to be outfitted with 2 Gigs of RAM but it is $135 in the Apple Store on-line to upgrade to 2 Gigs. What is anyone's experience with buying cheap 3rd party RAM for their iMacs? Currently on newegg there are prices as low as $35 for TechWorks and as low as $45 for Corsair 1 Gig modules. Should it send up a red flag that there is THAT much of a price difference? OR should I be completely safe going with one of those sticks for my upgrade to 2 Gigs?

Glossy Screens?

In my opinion though i know some people like glossy screens but is Apple really trying to kick all their cheap stuff down so that students like me who work with graphics and digital arts HAVE TO get those professional macs? Why can't Apple just offer glossy screens as an option?:confused:

I just ordered one 2GB card (which gets me to 3gb on the iMac) from 18004memory.com which i found thru dealram.com (great site - sister site of dealnews.com) -- have ordered thru them before as well... 2gb ram for the imac was $112.

The iMac's panel even without the glossy coating would still be inadequate. It's a consumer panel. Calibrated, it won't pose a problem for students or beginning professionals. Just see all the complaints in previous iMac threads about how the iMac's "inferior panel" was "forcing" them to buy Cinema Displays. The complaint never changes--just the "reasoning" for it. The new glass is just an easy out.

A matte panel has certain physical limitations that make it only acceptable. The addition of the glossy coating certainly doesn't help the color accuracy, but because the panel isn't suitable for final proofing in the first place, there's no reason to lose much sleep over it. Without any calibration, the glossy panel is far worse, but adapting it to your workflow would make it perfectly suitable.

You can test it out--the MBP offers both options. After calibration to a user's preferences, using a printout as a guide to screen-matching, you can achieve the same results on either display type. It's all about compensating to suit your style.

The difference between a glossy display vs. a matte display is seldom greater than the differences between display brands--like how the "pink" cinema displays were isolated to certain panels, and not all CDs.

The RAM for these new multi-core Intels doesn't have to be installed in matched pairs? (I'm not sure; I just had that in my head for some reason)

It never had to be installed in pairs. You'll see a greater benefit on Macs that use the GMA950 for graphics though.

THIS, is what i was after...

I am not a photoshop master, I am well aware of that...

Isn't it a bit too fussy complaining about the back of the machine? Since I bought my machine in June 2005 I've only seen the back once, when I had to unplug it and send it in for repair.

I haven't read all the posts in this thread but has anybody actually realized that Apple is making the effort to make the iMac more friendly to the environment? Dunno how recyclable that glass and aluminum is but it's always welcome. Also imagine how much power this machine will consume, I'm guessing it won't be much at all compared to most pc configurations. I think the glass screen is an added bonus. Where I live we have lots of bugs and dust 'n'crap flying around at night and on the old iMac model the bugs would be attracted to the iMac display, die and fall into the indent/border of the iMac display. It is still a nightmare to clean, also this new model looks pretty dust proof.

I know...I'm on my new iMac and if the back was purple I couldn't tell...

Ffs

Waited half a year for the new Imac, and then they come up with this uggly thing. This aint a redesign, just updated the case and some better specs. Not to mention the uggly black!

The keyboard doesnt match at all with the imac itself! And the F!@#$%^G black. i just hate it. This could be just an ordinary PC from Dell, HP......

sorry for the bad english but you get the point!

I think the case design looks perfectly fine. The only thing I'm pissed about is that they aren't offering matte screens on the new iMacs. I can't justify getting a Mac Pro and a matte display so I may have to get a MacBook Pro.

48 Hours later (or close to that)

I have been using my new 24" iMac since I bought it Tuesday evening at the Apple store near my house. I got it out of the box around 10PM, set it up, and did the migration. After using it for almost 2 days, I have a couple impressions that might be of interest...

1) I had a previous white iMac. 24". This unit is beautiful, and I prefer it to the white iMac. The black around the screen actually seems to enhance the screen view, and while I thought it would be distracting, it makes the screen appear as if it's floating. I even like the black Apple, which happens to be glossy as well. In all, this iMac seems at home on my desk. The white was big, and well, white. This iMac is essentially the same size, but does not look as big. It seems to blend in better with the decor and looks good doing it.

2) The keyboard is nice. I like it. I can rest my wrists on my desk and type away. Couldn't do that with the other keyboard. I find it easier to type this post and I am less fatigued while doing it. I probably wouldn't spring for the wireless keyboard, but that is a personal choice.

3) Glossy screen doesn't have much glare. It is subtle, what glare there is, but it wouldn't be a deal killer for me. I have a beautiful HI-RES picture of Utah on my desktop, and it is beautiful in the glossy.

4) While others might be considering the white iMac still, Apple is only discounting them about $300, which puts them at $100 less than the new iMac 24". For $100 more, you get so much more in my humble opinion. Now had Apple decided to bust the bank and let them go for $1500... there might have been a little better chance to sway me. But after being on this unit for a couple days, and looking at it in depth, I would gladly say no to the white iMac, and pay the difference (if the iMac 24" was discounted more) to step up to this beautiful unit.

Thanks for the review/impressions.

Yeah, the discounts for the recently superseded Macs are very average. I asked at a few places, and once you add in Ram, HDD size upgrade, and likely video card upgrade, there's nothing in it price wise. I suspect as soon as new stock is available in good supply these ones will drop or be sold on mass through resellers and auction houses.

Hideous. Get rid of the black border and the black logo and it'd be quite nice. Even better, make it white.

Look man, come on out the the cave -- the stone age is over and iMacs are aluminum in this age... Geeze, only die-hard luddites use white Macs these days! ;)

It's a shame Apple went with all glossy, IMO. It's a deal-breaker for me.

I really wanted to get an iMac but I guess I'll have to stick with my tired old G4 for now. :(

Why Sept 12th, it shows 3-5 business days in the Apple online store

Hats off to Apple for giving you one 1GB memory stick instead of 2 512's. No more waste either in time selling the old RAM on Ebay or waste in letting the 512's sit on your shelf. It seems that they recognize that many will order their RAM on their own.

Any change in the way you configure the RAM with the new Imacs? Will they recommend that the two sticks match in size or can you pick up a 2GB stick and move to 3GB total.
