video specs of the new imac

Hi
I'm basically looking between;

macbook pro with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 128MB

or

Imac with ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO 256MB

which of the two would prove better? the the extra 128mb on the Ati pushes it farther than the 128mb Nvidia?

thanks

Waaay cool...

I've said it a few times already, but I love my new iMac. It's my first mac...I could have gotten the old white one, but glad I waited. I prefer the aluminum and black. I'm going to go 3rd party for my wireless keyboard and mouse even though the Apple supplied (wired) keyboard is much better than I thought at first glance. I'll even be color coordinated at that point. (hahahahaha).

Because of the price drop I went from a 20 to 24. The performance tests results posted on macrumors home page today look quite good...maybe not great, but good.

It's a total win for those of us that were in the market for an iMac.

I'll stop gushing at some point...:D

I am definitely moving from PC to iMac after seeing it today. As a test I took my wife in and told her to pick which ever she liked better looks wise because they were the same inside. Her choices were the 24" White and the new 24" aluminum/black. She chose the new one and thought it looked much better than the all white one. It is simply a no brainer at that point.

If you don't like the new look get an old one.

If you want to play cutting edge games and have the latest and greatest get a mac pro or get a PC.

Apple is not going after the hardcore PC gamer. Period. They are going after the normal PC user which I happen to fit in and am switching. You don't grow market share by just going after the hardcore gamer. You want to go after the business guy, the fresh graduate out of college, and the family man.

Ditto only to add if you want gaming buy a Xbox 360 or Wii like we did this is the Mac I have been waiting for. That white piece of whatever was terrible looking. I will be proud to have this iMac in my home.

Core2 Duo Extreme?

Is there any difference between the 2.4GHz and the 2.8GHz Extreme, aside from the chip's clockspeed and the fact that the Extreme is unlocked? Will there even be a way to overclock the Extreme in the iMac without voiding the warranty?

Nope. Are the Extremes in iMacs definatly unlocked though? I would assume so.

I doubt it.

I think I would also be happy, but a better GPU would make me happier still !

How well will the 2600 PRO handle non 3D gamer activities, primarily Photoshop and iMovie stuff on a 24". I'm thinking "very well", but would like to hear it from somebody else too.

The only games I'm likely to play on my iMac are top down strategy games like Command and Conquer (via BootCamp). I'm pretty sure these games aren't too stressful on the GPU, compared with 3D shooters (which give me motion sickness !)

Finally, I'd really have liked to see a 16x SuperDrive or a Combo HD/BluRay drive, but perhaps that will come in Rev B ? Is the 16x SuperDrive a heat problem as well - the Mac Pro has had one for ages.....

My plan is to wait until MWSF '08, see what upgrades the iMacs get (CPU, GPU, optical drive) and then hand a big wad of cash to Apple.

I remember it clearly when Steve designed the "Bicycle Helmet" iMac. He said that you can't mount an optical drive vertically because the performance will substantially reduced.

Then in the next generation of iMacs he did it. Go figure.

The thing about optical drives, though, is that they're going the way of the Dodo at great speed. It's so easy to send data over the internet now -- so much easier than burning a frickin DVD! I haven't personally needed "media" to store data since the 90's.

I can't wait until the Optical Drive becomes old school enough that they ship computers without 'em. (à la Modems and Floppy drives.) There is *so* much space wasted by the optical drive in the Macbook and Macbook Pro. Just think of the tantalizing designs that will be possible when all space is freed up.

I bought my 2003 12" powerbook with a Superdrive (cost a fair bit more back then) and probably burned 5 DVDs with it. None of which ever served any purpose.

Ordered!

I did it. I actually placed an order through my local Mac only retailer for a new 24" iMac 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 750GB HD, Wireless Mouse and Applecare. :D

I'm very excited, more so I think with the new iLife suite. The iMac will replace an aging PM G4/466MHz Digital Audio tower.

My only disappointment is that the store salesman informed me today that it will be 3 to 5 weeks before I get it. Darn, the Apple online store shows 3 - 5 DAYS not WEEKS! I'm hoping the store salesman merely misread his ordering system feedback.

Has anyone actually gotten one yet?

I've been a mac guy since 1999. I never understood before why people say that mac fans are psycho. But they really are.

I remember when the first G5 came out. Someone posted a joke webpage saying that he'd gutted the case and used it to mount his Intel PC because he thought it looked sweet and didn't know too much about apple. The guy got death threats over it. Death threats.

C'mon guys. People are allowed to be frustrated about things. That's what an internet forum is all about: sounding off. thijssie obviously was hoping for a revolutionary new model, rather than the same model with different colors and mildly bumped internals. (Because that's what this is.) Like many of us, he had his hopes up for some real Steve Jobs Magic. And like many of us, he was let down.

People are allowed to be frustrated by shiny screens, and people are allowed to post their own experiences with working in front of shiny screens. Just because you can spend 60 hours a week in front of one doesn't mean I can. Like many posters here, the iMac is not an option for me because of the shiny screen. Where do you come off saying "this meme must stop!"

There's a lot of hostility here towards critics. This design, like many Apple designs, is "love-it-or-hate-it." Expect both opinions on an Internet Discussion Forum.

This is exactly my point. maybe they all hyped it to much en where my expectations to high. But nevertheless i ant getting used to it. The black/white/alu mix . I hope they will listen to all the users who dislike the new one, and come up with no glossy screen and a white back and apple logo.

And yes i know, they wont do that!

This is not rocket-science, people. Back when they released thet desklamp-iMac, optical drives would not work properly if mounted vertically. But as technology progressed, that particular problem was fixed. When they released the G5-iMac, the problem had been solved long ago, and optical-drives would work just fine.

Well, CD's are certainly dying, and DVD's will be next. Which is why we are moving to Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. It's not feasible to send 50gigs (capacity of Blu-Ray) over the internet, neither does it make sense to store that much data on a hard-drive.

I ordered the exact same computer as you on Tuesday...mine shipped yesterday, I will have it by monday...as for why yours says 3-5 weeks, I assume you ordered the wireless keyboard which is not released yet, ie. it is holding up your order...or it might be because you did not order it directly from Apple...it usually takes them time to get the new machines in...

This is the same situation here in NZ. To buy the new iMac from a dealership involves a wait of a few weeks, but to buy it online direct from Apple means waiting only 3-5 days. It's to do with Apple's nasty anti competitive supply lines to retailers.

I assume by now most people have seen the pics of the disassembled 20" model.

The glass is held on by MAGNETS! Dead easy to remove with a suction cup. If the glossy is the only thing holding you back from pulling the trigger, I gotta believe there is something fairly inexpensive you can do about it.

Wait a week or two and someone will post step-by-step instructions somewhere. :)

i've seen the pics but i didn't see anything about magnets... that doesn't make any sense... glass isn't magnetic... doesn't seem secure to me.... but i'm willing to learn new things.

I guess there are metal strips glued to the back (on the edges, of course). All it takes is a decent suction cup to remove it.

It's definitely the wireless keyboard and mouse holding up the order which I am not ordering because it doesn't have a number pad.

I just got back from my Apple store and looked at the new 20/24" iMacs. I have to say that 24" is nice. There was a glare for sure, but it didn't drive me crazy. It was mostly due to the overhead lighting in the store and some of the lights along the top edge of the wall about 20 ft. behind me. So depending on the lighting in your particular room you MAY have glare issues. Although tilting the screen forward/backward could help to minimize that.
I also went to my local Apple store yesterday. Yes, there is glare. But it doesn't bother me. The store displays are certainly worst case, with all that lighting. I don't use it professionally, so not too concerned about the calibration comments. Wife uses our current G4 mini do to graphics on the side for family and friends. I'll let her decide if the new iMac will be our next system. My first thought was to purchase a new mini, if the glossy screen was an issue for us. After I tested out the 24" iMac and the 2.0 mini I've decide I don't want another mini. So what the hell do I do if the wife doesn't like the glossy screen? Mini is out. Don't really need/want a laptop. Only thing left is a Mac Pro! I know it's way overkill for what we'll use it for, but there's no other options. Certainly don't want the old iMac. I think the store was discounting them by $200. Big deal! Seems to be they should be lowering the price below the new iMac price point.

Played in the store yesterday myself. I hate to say I'm on the fence with the new purchase only because of the screen. A lot of time you could easily ignore the glare. But when I played in imovie or iphoto, and wanted to specifically see something, the glare really got in the way.

I have to criticize the Apple store 9at least Cambridge, MA for their displays. The computers themselves are at an awkward height to use to begin with. (after playing last night my wrist hurt for 2 hours from mousing at some ridiculous angle). The problem last night was these glossy screens. In real life the screen usually right in front of you. (at home, mine is a little higher than my eye level). So at home the glare probably isn't as bad, but in the store you have to tilt the computer up (and I'm a short 5'10), and all you see are the store lights reflected.

It was worse on the 20" imacs. The 24" looked good, but on the 20" ones, the screens looked terrible in the store. I guess they have a shorter viewing angle - I (and others in the store) kept squatting down in front of the 20" machines to see if the screen got any better at a lower angle. ugh.

So I worked on my matte imac last night, and I'm at my work matte dell monitor this morning, and seriously pondering if I'm going to waste to much of my time on a new imac trying to deal with glare rather than just using the machine. (being a MA tax-free weekend, I've got to make up my mind fast as well - just bad timing here). Honestly, after seeing the other post where he took the imac apart, I'm really pondering if it's just held in with magnets, if it would be worth it to take the glass screen off and look at a normal monitor on a new imac. Kinda sad, with all the new machines have to offer, we're back dealing with glossy screens - says John who remembers we used to pay big money to have VT terminals without a glossy screen, and now they're back. sigh.
