Hats off to Apple for giving you one 1GB memory stick instead of 2 512's. No more waste either in time selling the old RAM on Ebay or waste in letting the 512's sit on your shelf. It seems that they recognize that many will order their RAM on their own.
Yes - I'm extremely happy Apple did this. They should've done this from the beginning...

Any change in the way you configure the RAM with the new Imacs? Will they recommend that the two sticks match in size or can you pick up a 2GB stick and move to 3GB total.
Paired ram isn't necessary. It hasn't been necessary for years.

Apple trying to sell more ram?

I noticed that it is now quicker to get your Imac if you have more that the one stick of ram.

Imacs with 1 GB of ram ships in 3-5 business days.
Imacs with More than 1 stick ships in 1-3 days.

Is this a marketing thing Apple is doing?

I am not saying this is a good idea, I bought 1 stick and a stick from OWC but I just thought this was interesting that you get the Imac faster if you buy more RAM. Just an observation, not a suggestion.

when i ordered yesterday afternoon (usa time), i was still quoted 3-5 days - i ordered the 2.8 ghz model but ordered it with the one stick (ordered addn'l memory from another vendor)

would love for them to ship faster :)

1GB stick is $50 on Crucial, but Apple wants $150 for that second stick. Do it yourself people ;)

New to the thread? They've been on display and for sale since Tuesday.

Not at all stores. I went to the Bay Street store last night to buy a new iMac, and they didn't have them yet. They still had the white ones on display. Said they'd be getting the new ones today.

Well after much debate I finally ordered the 24" imac. The old white one that is....Went to the apple store and couldn't get over the glare and the fugly design. Anyways, I picked up a brand new white one (base model) for $1529 shipped. Not a bad deal I think. I ordered the new wireless keyboard and will buy a stick of ram and ilife '08.

Anyone recommend a good wireless/bluetooth mouse that goes well with the white imac??

Not true in all cases... one of the stores in St. Louis had one 20" on display but sold out of the 24" right away. The other store didn't put ANY on display until this morning. They were gonna do a store makeover last night after closing and open today with the new displays. They had stock but weren't displaying it at all.

Neither store had the 2.8 GHz models to sell.

I bought my first Mac (the 20" Aluminum iMac with 256 megs of video ram) from the Apple store last night. I have to say, I love it. The glare isn't an issue at all (for me), and I'm already getting used to the keyboard, which is awesome as well.

I also got a free HP printer (basically) with the printer rebate.

I'm very happy with my decision, and encourage all "switchers" to try them out at your local Apple store.

What the hell do you think a redesign is then, bub?!
I've been a mac guy since 1999. I never understood before why people say that mac fans are psycho. But they really are.

I remember when the first G5 came out. Someone posted a joke webpage saying that he'd gutted the case and used it to mount his Intel PC because he thought it looked sweet and didn't know too much about apple. The guy got death threats over it. Death threats.

C'mon guys. People are allowed to be frustrated about things. That's what an internet forum is all about: sounding off. thijssie obviously was hoping for a revolutionary new model, rather than the same model with different colors and mildly bumped internals. (Because that's what this is.) Like many of us, he had his hopes up for some real Steve Jobs Magic. And like many of us, he was let down.

People are allowed to be frustrated by shiny screens, and people are allowed to post their own experiences with working in front of shiny screens. Just because you can spend 60 hours a week in front of one doesn't mean I can. Like many posters here, the iMac is not an option for me because of the shiny screen. Where do you come off saying "this meme must stop!"

There's a lot of hostility here towards critics. This design, like many Apple designs, is "love-it-or-hate-it." Expect both opinions on an Internet Discussion Forum.

I think most of the problem is expectations and rumor... many of us (me included) get our hopes up for something incredible from apple and when it is less than our expectations, many vent.

I think this is a sweet upgrade - but i'm coming from an iMac G5 that i bought just before the intel switch - so i'm due for a new fast machine :)

Out of every new iteration of the mac line of computers, what hasn't been essentially that? Other than the Intel switch, and the gooseneck imacs, they've all been essentially the same thing in a new case and better internals.

There have been very few MAJOR jumps between iterations in the last 15 years. The new iMac is right in line with all the jumps before it. If you take the intel swtich out of the equation (which is a once in a lifetime thing) the Imac was a CRT aio, and then an LCD aio except for the G4 which had the crazy gooseneck.

I really don't know what people expected out of the design.

PowerMac G4/800 (Quicksilver) here. And I just ordered the 2.8 24" iMac. It's gonna feel like a Lamborghini to me! :)

Oy

Just to be fair I went to a nearby Apple Store and had to see the new iMac up close and personal like. It has to be the ugliest incarnation I have ever seen. The keyboard would be the first thing to go. Hopefully you can still use any USB keyboard but the Mighty Mouse is useful. The glossy display is okay with me but that black trim around the screen must go.

Overall, very ugly. Was Jonathan Ives on vacation???

and that is exactly how I feel about the old white version. I never would have bought that one but am buying the new one.

Others have called the new iMac ugly too. I have the 24" white iMac but will have to go to the Apple Store to see why some people think the new one is so bad looking.

This is my personal opinion about this new line.

New iMac:
-Not glossy, it is a MIRROR. (they put a glass on top af the matt lcd)
-Nice design nice aluminium. PERFECT! :)
-Ugly black logo
-Ugly black screen border :(
-Black iMac & white maus & keyboard...what is that? Ive, please decide a colour!!!
-No magnet for Remote Control ..lolol you can put it samewhere....lololol
-No sleep led, you have to guess is sleeping or not. That 's why guessing is a brilliant game)
-No decent video card, people speack about the absent X1600 or X1900
-Just 8 x Super Drice Comoooooooooonnnnn!! in 2007 only 8 x Super drive??
-Weak wireless signal- (ArsTechnica says)

What else to discover ???? I do not like this product.
It's not a nice product overall, not a top definitely, is not slimmer indeed and not powerfull too as Apple ADS says.

I got it through shop.com which gives you 10% off just for registering. The actual vendor is samedaymusic.com and they had it for $1,699. So $1,699-$170=$1529 including free shipping.
