I was suggesting that perhaps this is why they still run 8X superdrives in the iMac: because a vertical superdrive can never spin as smoothly as a horizontal one.

They only go up to 8X because they are laptop parts. Slimline DVD writers do not go any faster as of yet, whether horizontal or vertical.

Fortunately, it will go obsolete *long* before you ever kill it with use. Apple uses top-quality components and designs their machines to l-a-s-t.

Oh I don't know. Looks like Apple has been using the same commodity parts in their latest output as everbody else. From what I have been reading, Apple has not used top quality screens in the latest 20" iMac. The ones I saw in the store today did look a little less sharp than their predecessors still placed next to them.

Slight Superdrive change

I'm just looking at the old iMac tech specs and the new iMac tech specs and while both SuperDrives are listed as 8x, there are two slight differences:

1/ Old writes DVD+R DL at up to 2.4x, while New does it at up to 4x
2/ Old writes DVD-RW and DVD+RW at up to 4x speed, while new writes DVD-RW at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed

So there seem to have been some slight tweaks in the Superdrive dept as well.:)

My only disappointment is that the store salesman informed me today that it will be 3 to 5 weeks before I get it. Darn, the Apple online store shows 3 - 5 DAYS not WEEKS! I'm hoping the store salesman merely misread his ordering system feedback.

Has anyone actually gotten one yet?

I ordered a 24" with an upgraded 500 GB hard drive on Tuesday night. The Fed Ex site said that it had just been shipped by Saturday Morning. I expect it to be here in 2 to 3 days (It took two days for a video ipod) to ship from Shangai, China.

Anyway, I am excited to upack it and set it up.

Currently Apple has given me no reason to upgrade the Processor speed of the new machines as well as ATI's pathetic graphics chip.... basically make the machine a wash. Come-on Apple make a 1/2 Mac Pro. Make a real graphic card.. where is the power... right now all I see is the same old thing.

that could be but for some reason i doubt it

You might want to take a look at this thread then. It seems as if others have noticed and investigated why. The 24" I saw today looked better, but the very reflective glass is going to take some getting used to, and this from someone with a MB and a glossy MBP.

Well I've plumped for the 2.4GHz 24" with a 750 drive. I'll slap some more RAM in it when it arrives. Between you lot and me, I may see some improvement from this over my 1.42GHz G4 Mac Mini connected to a 1280x1024 17" TFT, aka my first ever Mac. That super-cheap Mini sucked me in to this world and now I'm dropping 19,000 SEK on another one (not to mention the iBook G4 that got bought a few months after the Mini).

And I am this: super, super excited. Seriously.

Maybe this is the problem, people talking about trading in Core2Duo machines and stuff. Maybe people don't leave it long enough to see sufficient change between machines. Hell, I left it too long but right now I am glad I am.

The only real bother is that there are no Apple Stores in Sweden so I bought it online and it is currently sitting in Shanghai.

August 21st is going to be a bloody great day though. Bloody great.

Chin? Never bothered me.
Glass? I'll take it or matte. Both are good.
Keyboard? If I hate it I shall use my old Apple keyboard.
GFX card? OK, I normally game on consoles, but even then I find it hard to believe, as some people seem to think here, that the one in the iMac is so seriously underpowered. One thing Apple loves is quietness and something that the reviews have said so far of the new iMac is that you can hardly hear it. You won't get that with the next generation of gfx cards. Something has to give.
iSore? Give me a break. Ah, who cares. So some people hate it. I don't and I'm getting one. Go me.

One thing I am looking forward to is extended desktop using my old monitor. Will the Mini-DVI adaptor that I used with my iBook G4 work with the iMac or has it got a different connector? Does anyone know?

Off the top of my head, I'm about 65% sure that it's the same connector.

I'm pretty sure the G4 iBook has a mini-VGA connector. I used this connector on my 12" G4 iBook to hook up to an external display (VGA). You'd use this connector to hook up your new iMac to a DVI display.

That's a good eye you've got there. ;) I was wondering if the drive had been upgraded.

Yup, the new iMacs use horrible screens in this new revision. The old revision used lovely sharp S-IPS panels, some of the best in the industry.

Now they've reverted to TN panels for this iMac revision, god knows why...

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1217369

I'm not sure about the 20 but the 24 does not have TN panels I think they have S-IPS and as you know the iMac was never intended for serious color professionals. Most all the reports I've read by actual owners about the screen have been positive.

Thanks for the Mini-DVI help. I had a nasty feeling it wouldn't be the same port. Must pop in to town for one now ...

I am pretty sure that they are different. The connector from my iBook G4 does not fit my new MacBook Core 2 Duo. I believe that the connector for the MacBook and the new iMac are the same. :(:apple:

I couldn't resist either. Been waiting for this release to finally go intel. Wish the screens ween't glossy, but do I really want to wait another 6-12 months? Can always sell it if they come out with something cooler. :) Only went for the 500mb drive. They charge too much for those things anyway. Only annoyed I have to wait now for only a bigger drive. (memory on order from OWC as well. :)

I was debating between the 20 and 24 and got the 24. If you have the room and the money get the 24 you WON'T be disappointed.

I hope I have room. It looks awful big. But the 20" did seem to have a worse image on the sore models...

Ironic - Best Buy still didn't have new imacs or new ilife. They lost a bit in sales just while I was there...

I never really liked the white iMacs - I have owned 3 of them over 4 years and I am actually kind of sick of the white.

As a guy I really like the black and aluminum - the glass screen makes the LCD look better so no complaints there.

Dont really care for that matte black on the back - seems like it will show lint and dust really easily but all in all I prefer these iMacs over the old white macs.

IMO I think a lot of switchers were put off by the all white plastic iMacs - it was a very polarizing color which is not good at all if your trying to get people to switch.

My upgraded imac left the Philippines over a day ago, but the FedEx tracking site has not been updated since then. It estimates a delivery time of Aug 15, 2007 by 10:30 AM...the waiting is killing me.

I can't believe that the thing has been in the air for an entire day. Anyone have any idea how long it takes to travel from the Philippines to the midwest?

Roughly 13 hours if non-stop .

I've decided to wait until Leopard is released until I buy my new iMac. Aggravating, but I don't want to pay for the upgrade.
