if the new imacs don't have decent, dedicated gpus then it looks like i might settle for one of the previous models

what i'm hopping for is an integrated and dedicated gpus like the mbp
that would sweet, especially if apple can make them work together :D

Bit silly they're not accessible at the same time already, even if they're not being made use of :)
Maybe in the future when snow leopard, its libraries and the software written for it is more mature, we'll be able to run our own computational chemistry and password crackers at a more sensible speed!
Looking at current sli (game) benchmarks with matching cards, I'm not exactly impressed.
A low power card makes more sense on a portable machine (wouldn't freq/voltage scaling have worked ok?), but sli on the desktop still seems like an excuse to sell more gpus between their speedy revisions.

That might mean lower prices on the windows side, but here it just means more profit for Apple.
I never said that Apple would drop the prices. ;)

Apple can maintain their price points with newer hardware since the components match the previous hardware revision's price points. Intel hasn't moved much with their price points. You just get faster hardware at the same price due to price drops on their side.

I would love to see an imac with the ability to have 8GB Ram.

Also a unibody, although unnecessary also give apple a reason to say they changed something. I dont know why we would need a lighter imac though, unlike a laptop, you dont carry it anywere..

Agree. I have 11GB in my Mac Pro, and during the workday am usually using around 5-6GB at any given time. This was the primary reason for getting the Mac Pro over an iMac, even though I don't "really" need all the cores.

Would love to see them be able to take 4 2GB DIMMS.

Since Santa Rosa the iMac should be technically capable of handling 8 GB of RAM. It's the same with the laptops. We went through a debacle on that.

The 20" iMacs are likely to have 9400M or maybe 9600M GT. The 24" iMacs are likely to have 9600M GT with 9800M BTO.

jesus man, don't take this in a bad way but what are you running on this?

Maybye instead of using the unibody to make it slimmer, they can use the unibody to add more room for extra ram slots and possible a second HD?

Also,
I know every one is saying possible a bigger screen but its likley not to happen. Why is every one insisting on 30"? I think if they do come out it would be 27". 30" Is a HUGE Step up and if you look at the the sizes of TV's, 27" is the next step up. Im currently on a 20 and probably purchasing a 24, depending on what the final product will be. If they did come out with a 30", i cant say id get it. However i probably would a 27.

Maybe I should qualify, would like to see them able to handle 8GB of RAM at reasonable prices.

I guess if 4GB DIMMS would come down in price, then I'd be fine with that. :)

Photoshop maxed to use as much RAM as possible, Dreamweaver, Flash, iTunes, Mail, Entourage, FTP, BBEdit, Firefox, Safari, Final Cut Express....just to name a few things commonly open during my day.

I typically see my Used RAM usage around 5GB most days. If I need to render something, that can go up.

I love my Mac Pro...don't get me wrong :D

With Leopard and Snow Leopard (and Tiger for that matter) being able to handle more than 4GB of RAM, I'd just like to see the iMacs be able to handle it as well.

26" or 27" is just a slightly larger screen but the same resolution (1920x1200). A 30" would be 2560x1600 resolution.

It's not about us. It's about Apple. Lighter machines mean lower shipping costs for them.

Apple can, but will it? The recent Macbook upgrades would argue otherwise.
The computer hardware might have taken a hit but keep in mind they did move it to the aluminium construction. There's a premium on that. I don't see much of a benefit other than the 9400M G over the older models when it comes to hardware and upgradability.

AppleInsider is reporting a possible 28" iMac by February as well as the various graphics chipsets likely to be in the iMacs.

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._chimes_in_on_new_imacs_mini_and_mac_pro.html

I just saw that a few minutes ago. It sounds like a good idea. There are 30-in displays available to buy, so it would make sense to have an iMac also that was close in size. Some people like big screens, but don't want to pay $3000 for a Mac Pro or the the cheap Mac Mini.

I'm sure that by tomorrow morning this will be on the front page of MacRumors. Anything that sounds realistic from Gizmodo or Appleinsider is likely to be on the front page.

I think Apple will surprise us all an go totally retro on the design:

beige box
SCSI ports
8MB RAM

:D

Bwahahah! Well I'm all for retro design, but I don't want retro specs. :D What Apple need to do is bring back the G4 lamp, this time around with 8GB RAM, 1TB HD and 3.6GHz processor. I'd totally stock up on those. :D :D

Then I came upon this website and learned that new iMac is scheduled to be released next week (MacWorld). I guess that means I should wait (hard to do) for the new release.

Go ahead and order the maxed-out 24" iMac that you originally decided on, keep it, and when the new iMacs are released, order one of those too. :D :D

Sort of kidding. But hey, depending on how different the new ones are, you may end up liking one more than the other...hell you might even like the "old" one better. At least that way you have the advantage of doing a side-by-side comparison. :D

What am I saying. Just go crazy and max out your credit card. :D :D

When it comes to the sizes though, when is it big enough. For a desktop, unlike a TV your sitting maybe 2 ft from the screen Anything over 25" should be out of most people peripheral range.

no problemo kevin man, glad to see you are pushing your mac to its proper limits and treating it like a god racehorse, here's to having the world's best all in one ;) with a much deserved 8 gb soon, (although I think we won't see anything more than 6 soon unfortunately). I am still just mostly keeping mine in the stable and reading it bedtime stories with the lightweight use I am giving it, hehe...
