When it comes to the sizes though, when is it big enough. For a desktop, unlike a TV your sitting maybe 2 ft from the screen Anything over 25" should be out of most people peripheral range.

Clearly you have never used a 30 incher. It isn't out of your peripheral vision. It's just plain awesome. It's like computing in an IMAX theater.

Uhm..
The point of imax is for the picture to be out of your peripheral vison

I'd be interested in a 28" iMac, but only if the resolution is that of Apple's 30" Cinema Display. To me, there is ZERO reason to go bigger if it's still running at 1920x1200. Also, they're gonna have to throw in one heck of a video card to support that res efficiently. A GTX 260 would be a must.

However, I must say, if such a computer came to fruition, I would certainly consider upgrading.

The current 24" iMac uses a professional PVA/IPS class panel. The 1920x1200 28" display is consumer grade TN panel, so the 28" might actually be more affordable. The major advantage to using the larger panel would be room for cooling and components. If it does have the i7/x58 combo and higher end graphics, it also may use a slightly different design (maybe a bit thicker and maybe a different stand arrangement.) and name (iMac extreme/Pro) than the current iMacs.

So is this it? Has apple finished for the week, or can we expect a new imac out of macworld this year?

In my personal opinion, I think Apple didn't talk about future Mac Pros or iMacs because they couldn't get a steady supply of the new Intel i7 quad-core CPU's. I expect Apple to officially unveil the new Mac Pros and iMacs using the i7 CPU in April 2009.

If your right that sucks. I was going to buy the top spec imac in december but thought i'd hold off for the new one, hoping Job's right hand man would have something for me this week. Roll on April i guess:mad:

A guy I was talking to said not to expect new iMacs till November, when the Core i7 portable (it's not portable is it? Another word like that) is released.

Well they couldn't get a supply as there are no suitable processors yet. April might be (optimistic) for Mac Pros, but Nehalem iMacs won't be comming before the end of the year at least.

What a disappointment! Apple had to know that a lot of people were out here with a fistful of dollars just waiting,,,,

I'm thinking about doing something that goes against my grain and picking up OpenPro Quad Core w/ 8 Gig Ram, 750 Gig HD for $1154.99. That's way more then I needed for a media server but @ $800 for a peewny Mac Mini with 1 Gig Ram, 120 Gig HD,,,,,,,

Come on Apple:mad:

The Mac Pro will not use Core i7. The Mac Pro will use Gainestown Xeon chips.

The iMac does not use desktop chips, either. It will not get Nehalem until Q4 2009.

The entire desktop line is lame now. I can't imagine my level of disgust if they're still the same machines at the same price until April. The chips are there now for the mini and imacs so lets get 'em in there and get it on sale now!!!

MW 09 was a massive disappointment. And the timing of the only product beggars belief. Recession is well on it's way & Apple thinks it's time for a 2.499,00€ / £2,400 / $3,415 laptop!

Have some source inside Apple we don't know about? I find both to be very plausible.

First, Apple finds itself in the same situation with Nehalem and Tylersburg that it was with the G5 and U3. Once they do the work for the Gainestown variant and Tylersburg DP, they've already done all the work they need to do to use Bloomfield and Typersburg SP. Same CPU and motherboard, just a second QPI. The only other work they would have to do is decide whether to use the Core i7 or Xeon 3500 branding. Like the U3L PowerMacs, they would have the flexibility to make a single CPU machine using either the same size PCB with the additional socket and DIMM slots removed or a physically smaller motherboard with the same alignment. Depending on the price, Apple could make the same amount of money while offering a more affordable option to the user.

Second, a Bloomfield "iMac Pro" would be thicker, larger, and more expensive than any iMac before it. The world most compact professional machine, would also be one hell of a headline grabber. People might not buy it in droves, but maybe if they're in there to look at it, they might buy something else.

Fist off, I dont think there will be an "imac pro". The imac is "pro" enough. Second, I can't really think of any new designs they may use. The current design looks great, and match the macbook and macbook pro real well, If they ipdate the design, they will have to update the notbooks soon and they just got this update back in October.

Best way, is a speed and performance improvment, as well as perhaps a smaller, thinner design, but the over all form factor will remain as is

It doesn't need to be a "imac pro", it just needs to be brought in line with similarly priced PC's. It would be nice if apple would go back to being ahead of the hardware wave, but I guess we've still got the superior programming and if snow leopard is what its meant to be, even better.

As for the thread name, it's not going to happen. In fact I will be surprised if we see anything in Q1. I've been waiting money in hand for ages, and I'm sure there are many like me. It seems like apple only care about the iphone these days.

I think that the general complaint against a multitouch iMac in its current form factor is "tired arms".

I guess this applies to that one touchscreen HP desktop, as well.

True.
But it looks sexy to the customer, when users drag photos around on the desktop and turning them upright just using their fingers.

I can't really imagine, that Apple leaves that to HP.
Especially since Apple already has the technology ready developed as used in iPhones an the iPod Touch.

And: Yesterday I saw a report about the CES where Microsoft announced, that they plan to implement touchscreen support directly to Windows.

My guess is, that we will see touchscreen iMacs within the next year.

Well, they are cheaper and better equipped than offerings from Dell or Sony. Then again, those machines are allowed to be niche since their all in ones don't have to serve everyone that isn't a ultra high end professional.

According to supply chain sources, Apple is expected to launch a new iMac in the first quarter of 2009. Quanta Computer is said to be gearing up for monthly shipments of 800,000 units for Q1 2009. The new iMac will begin shipping in January of 2009.[/url]

Really:confused:

What's wrong w/the current lineup - aside from the lower end models being outdated it seems the 24" are still rockin, poppin, n jaw droppin!!

K, jk w/all that. But seriously, I've heard nothing but GOOOOD stuff bout the current 24" lineup...

I too was waiting for the update to get my new iMac, but I'm pretty damn tired of waiting and think I'll be just fine w/one of the current models, IMO!

They didn't announce anything new with Windows 7 at CES, touchscreen support was announced at D6.

HP has a beautiful touch screen with choice of a 22" or a 25". The design is super nice (compared to 2007's model)

I think we have some time before the revamp the iMac with a 30" Display. Although, I would say the LED Backlit 24" iMac is right around the corner.

Let's not forget it has been quite some time since the last iMac update. Apple likes to leave us ready to buy immediately upon the latest arrival. The suspense sends the mac fans into a frenzy! Just listen to us! lol

You do realize that Windows touchscreen tablets, and the HP TouchSmart series, have been shipping for years....

The news for Windows 7 is native multi-touch APIs in the core OS.

(By the way, for the polydactyl among us, the native APIs support multi-touch gestures using 100 fingers).
