This is too funny there is a notch STILL 4 years later.
Exactly making it taller runs into precious real estate, taller is the wrong direction.Making the notch taller, if only a fraction, is not a good move.
I don't get your reasoning with comparing the black bars from movies to a device that has physical data that could be there but its not because of the screen. In a tv with the black bars there is no gap left or right within the picture to obstruct the view of the image. So not sure what you are getting at with that.Except there is a problem with your example. When watching TV it’s in landscape mode and having a notch on the top would be distracting however most movies have black boxes on the top and bottom as the screen is not 21:9 ratio and some content is not 18:9. Regardless with the black bars too and bottom you would not see it.
When playing a game in landscape mode the notch cuts into the right or left side of the display depending on how you hold your device and most of the time that area is covered by your thumb.
I am not making an excuse for a reduction or elimination of the notch, what I am saying is that people are making a big dea out of nothing when the phone with notch is designed to be use in portrait mode majority of the time and it’s not the problem then. What I do hope Apple brings is the unlock in any orientation from the iPad Pro to iPhone.
An unobstructed display is always the end goal, when we get there is the question not if. At present there are some methods but it’s anything but perfect as the camera quality suffers and uses ML/AI to fill in the gaps and enhance said image or video.I don't get your reasoning with comparing the black bars from movies to a device that has physical data that could be there but its not because of the screen. I understand people hold the phone left or right you didn't have to explain it honestly.
It isn't a huge deal. It doesn't change our lives and make things horrible to deal with. Technology is already very good and little things we want we talk about. I don't think its a huge deal but its the last thing I want done to the phone to consider it perfect in my eyes. Once they release a full screen phone I probably won't be upgrading for a long time. Cameras are already very good and have been for years. Not sure what else someone could want in a phone but a no notch phone is very appealing because well it is the main thing we look at and if you use your phone for full screen things it hurts the ui and takes away from using the screen if you are watching a full pulled in video or game.
Nothing's stopping the "2 trillion" company from thinking about all the dimensions –except greed perhaps. That’s because you only think about one dimensional aspect of making a phone.
Technically that will be the fifth model with a notchThis is too funny there is a notch STILL 4 years later.
It's not that small anymore. It's like an entire section of the display is dead. The only "character" it gives iPhones is that it makes them look dated in comparison. It's such a small part of an otherwise large display. I think it gives iPhones some character too (just my opinion of course).
You use the word obvious twice, yet nothing you said is obvious. In particular, the propulsion, guidance and control systems in a rocket have little relevance to miniaturized biometric authentication systems. It's patently obvious that these companies are capable of eliminating any kind of notch while at the same time have face identification. This hardware "feature" has been present since 2017. Actually 2015/2016 if you consider when the First FaceID iPhone would've been R&D'd. that's 5-6 years ago.
It's pretty obvious that they already have a fully functioning notchless version as well as other companies. Since 2017 we've made huge advances in ML, material design, chip design etc. Elon has rockets returning and landing and yet we still the same notch?
You've got to be pretty naive to think that this is still a limitation due to the requirements of Apple's "advanced and unique" FaceId.
As new features get more difficult to implement (what else is there to add?), they have to hold back on releasing new features with every new phone release. You can't just rely on a new SoC to attract customers.
The vast majority of videos are not as wide as the iPhone screen which means that for the notch to impact video you are cropping the top and bottom. Hard to believe that anyone doing that cares if the video is garbage.I see notch as necessary
I see notch as necessary pain in the ass. Face ID is great, but status bar is ****, also any video is garbage.
Of course there is a notch. Its obvious that Apple included the notch as part of the iPhones industrial design. The notch will be around, even if its a bit smaller, for several more years until its next major redesign. This is too funny there is a notch STILL 4 years later.
If you reduce the width of the notch then it become unbalanced. And it starts to get closer to Pixel 3 look. By look I mean width/height ratio. It’s 1/20th of a millimeter taller. That’s less than the thickness of a sheet of paper.
The under display fingerprint sensor option would be nice. I really kind of hate Face ID, and always have. Touch ID was so much better, especially for Apple Pay transactions, and using your phone with the masks we all have to wear now.Other OEMs are not building Face ID into their phones either.
This is exactly the phone I want. Pop up front facing camera, so no notch or hole-punch. Under display Touch ID. USB-C. Want want want!
If they choose what is better for them, they are definitely thinking rationally. I have a Note 20 Ultra and an iPhone, and I strongly prefer the hardware design on the Note. It's a bigger display, but feels smaller in your hand, and the under display fingerprint sensor is awesome. Much more convenient than Face ID.the notch is fine. get over it.
people who switch over to Android exclusively because of the notch are not thinking rationally.

Who's telling you I'm not "an ordinary" user too? Ordinary users may also see their friends' notchless phones and think of their own god-expensive iPhone as dated looking. Do you think "ordinary" users care about FaceID? Since we're at it, can we stop using the "average/ordinary user" argument as an excuse for Apple's minimum effort results?I guess that's you. Ordinary users wouldn't even give a toss there is a notch. They usually focus on what they do with the phone. Yes, silly face masks tend to get in the way for these who are bound with them but hopefully the world is not gonna live forever in the "pandemic" hysteria.
I don't need anyone to tell me. You are in a tech oriented forum following a tech news, tech leaks, engaging yourself in tech discussions. Refereed by some as "nerd".Who's telling you I'm not "an ordinary" user too?
Which is why eg I'm poring over things like 120Hz ProMotion or lamenting the incompatibilities of HEIC format which I don't expect e.g. my parents to follow...I don't need anyone to tell me. Reminds me of the full screen BlackBerry devices with the squared off design.
