The notch is an ugly abomination that people will look back to and laugh about once it is gone entirely.
I am surprised Apple is having such a hard time getting rid of it when other manufacturers where already able to for a while.
Apple isn't having a hard time. They are milking it and stretching it out to sell the next 3 iphone iterations because they are a scumbag greedy company with a scumbag greedy CEO.

If Apple simply shortened the name kr ditched the provider name from the left space altogether ... there’sd be room for the cell signal and a few other icons to reside there.

( I nate the fact that on the right side, I can never see vpn, alarm ... )

You are completely missing the point.

Find me an android phone which has managed to cram Face ID tech into a hole punch.

That’s what it comes down to. Apple isn’t willing to compromise on Face ID, hence the notch because of all the space needed. They may be able to shrink the amount of space needed over time, but I don’t think we are going to see any significant improvement in this area.
What constitutes a significant improvement for you?

It would be pretty significant if Apple can shrink it down to half of the notch's current length. People don't know how much engineering is involved even in shrinking it by ⅓. Being able to shrink it down means they are either able to reduce the size of the sensors and cameras, use one sensor for multiple functions, or move the speaker and microphone to somewhere less obtrusive, neither of which is easy to do.

Hole punch design is a real possibility. Two holes for the photo and infrared cameras and the sensors will be either placed on the top bezel or just beneath the screen. If Apple is able to do it by 2023, and it's highly likely that they will, that's pretty significant by any standard.

A notch less iPhone is coming. They just haven’t done it yet.

I don't get it. Out of all the improvements they could do to the iPhone 13 shrinking the notch has absolutely zero value to me.
Speed, and above all battery life! I have the iPhone 12 pro max and I am still not quite happy about battery life
Notch...? I couldn't care less!

I always thought the other manufacturers only have a camera and ear piece and didn’t have the tech that Apple has with all the sensors and what not?

The only thing I would want back is the battery percentage, but even then I’m over it.

The world has gotten so used to the notch, that the generic smart phone used to show off apps in advertisements etc all have a notch too.

ugh, the cynic in me feels like Apple is holding it back to release small increments for every iPhone gen. What’s the point of shrinking it if they aren’t getting rid of it? That being said, I would like the option of both Touch and Face ID.
I honestly believe they do that.

When the X was released, they could’ve released a max version but instead they saved that for the XS. Last year it was ProMotion.

I’m holding to my XS Max until that notch less iPhone comes. Hopefully with Face ID & under display Touch ID.

The width was never the issue, the height is the problem.

We can handle a very small bezel the whole way across the top.
Precisely!

Make a bezel whole way across the top and put all the information like carrier ID, wifi strength, battery percentage etc and be done with. I don't understand the philosophy behind the notch.

If Apple kept TouchID only, there wouldnt be any real need for a notch at all
Your conclusion is wrong. If Apple hadn’t extended the screen to the edges of the phone, they wouldn’t need a notch. My old phone had a much larger portion of the glass permanently black.

They're engineering the notch smaller when they should just eliminate it. I'd rather have a slightly thicker bezel or even a hole punch than a notch.
There’s a total of eight sensors inside the notch, not just the faceID camera. You complain about the notch because you can see it. I’d complain more about a bezel that takes more screen space, or about the absence of eight sensors.

It's patently obvious that these companies are capable of eliminating any kind of notch while at the same time have face identification. This hardware "feature" has been present since 2017. Actually 2015/2016 if you consider when the First FaceID iPhone would've been R&D'd. that's 5-6 years ago.

It's pretty obvious that they already have a fully functioning notchless version as well as other companies. Since 2017 we've made huge advances in ML, material design, chip design etc. Elon has rockets returning and landing and yet we still the same notch?

You've got to be pretty naive to think that this is still a limitation due to the requirements of Apple's "advanced and unique" FaceId.

As new features get more difficult to implement (what else is there to add?), they have to hold back on releasing new features with every new phone release. You can't just rely on a new SoC to attract customers.

It’s marketing. Makes it clear it’s an iPhone still. Apple isn’t stupid.
