Making the notch taller, if only a fraction, is not a good move.
I wondered how many pixels would be lost, if this taller notch was put on an iPhone 12. Here is my working out, happy for someone to correct me though.

iPhone 12 Pro screen = 460 PPI
460 PPI = 181.1 pixels per cm
181.1 ppcm = 18.11 ppmm

Speculated iPhone 13 notch = 0.05mm taller

18.11 ppmm * 0.05 mm = 0.91 pixels

So let’s round up to a pixel. It’s imperceptible.

After a year of mask wearing a great many of us are totally disillusioned with FaceID. I wouldn't mind at all not having it anymore. And the notch remains an unsightly abomination that I still cannot unsee after 1.5 years with my 11 Pro.
I guess that's you. Ordinary users wouldn't even give a toss there is a notch. They usually focus on what they do with the phone. Yes, silly face masks tend to get in the way for these who are bound with them but hopefully the world is not gonna live forever in the "pandemic" hysteria.

The only thing that has ever bothered me about the notch is not being able to see battery percentage. Sounds like this change will bring that back plus maybe another indicator or two. DND was a nice one, but my phone is almost always in the mode now, so I wouldn’t care to see it.

The people that complain the most about the notch must not have used a phone with one for any significant period of time.

That's because none of these others do have same tech Face ID like iPhone. They usually have one camera here and there, which they make it like a hole-punch or some hide it terribly under the display (awful) or some mechanical camera pop up, which they have already abandoned the idea now. These companies could come up with mediocre solutions and no one would give a damn. But Apple simply can not do that. And Apple does not play by the same rules these other companies play. Apple waits for the tech to mature while others compete who would be the first.
Hole punch >>>> notch

If Apple had a hole punch & the competition had the notch, people would praising Apple for it.

The notch is an ugly abomination that people will look back to and laugh about once it is gone entirely.
I am surprised Apple is having such a hard time getting rid of it when other manufacturers where already able to for a while.
APPLE is waiting to remove the notch on purpose ...

New iphone features only come in tiny doses each year ...

You are completely missing the point.

Find me an android phone which has managed to cram Face ID tech into a hole punch.

That’s what it comes down to. Apple isn’t willing to compromise on Face ID, hence the notch because of all the space needed. They may be able to shrink the amount of space needed over time, but I don’t think we are going to see any significant improvement in this area.

If this brings back always viewable battery percentage then that’s a win for me. Otherwise it’s still fairly annoying but I’m used to it.

I think I’m going to go back to the regular iPhone Pro this year after trying the Max this year. Usability wise, I like the Max a lot more than the first gen Plus, mainly because the software is better at this point with the keyboard width adjustment and swiping down is easier to activate reachability. But it’s still just too big overall. And with the pandemic hopefully continuing to wind down (we’ll see) I’ll be out of the house more and that’s when I’ve noticed the bulk getting annoying over the past month since I’ve been vaccinated. It’s not bad but if the cameras on the smaller one are going to be similar this year I’d rather have that. If the cameras are still going to be advanced on the Max only I may stick with it.

No, he's not missing the point. He's pointing out that whatever Apple does, the sycophants will applaud it. The kind of poster who will criticize a method when Apple doesn't do it, and will do a 180 and cheerlead when Apple does do the exact same thing.

Other manufacturers are not implementing facial recognition on the level of sophistication as FaceID. Not even close. They're either implementing facial recognition on that's no more secure / accurate as TouchID or they're foregoing facial recognition altogether.

I don't really get the point why they are reducing the notch. I mean if you look it doesn't even look like you will be able to get 1 more icon on each side. So what is the point?

There has to be another reason that Apple is going to announce WHY the notch is now smaller. There has to be something else we don't know yet.

In other words, Apple's going to get on stage and say, so as you can see the notch is smaller, that's because.....(we don't know this info yet)
