Happened to me last Thursday. During a porn shoot I knocked my white iPad off of a desk, caught it by the cover but it swung against the edge and shattered the corner of the glass (approx 3" x 1"). A few days later the crack extended itself completely across the screen.

I did confirm with Applecare broken screens are covered under the accidental policy for a $49 deductible. Going to be a few weeks before I can take it back because my work schedule is so busy. I have a screen protector on and it isn't really all the noticeable from most angles. It does suck, though. :D

I'd buy a skin with the front cover and voila.. Covered and you can't even see it and it shouldn't crack any further :) that's what I'd do.

That's actually what I did with a new Otterbox case I bought the day after but it still completely cracked anyway. I was using it Sunday and grabbed it near where it got damaged and heard a loud "crack". Next thing I know I have a crack across the entire screen. This "glass" (or whatever it is) is definitely susceptible to sustaining more damage quite easily after its been compromised, even small damage on the edge. I'm willing to bet you'll need to fix it sooner or later. Also hurts the hell out of resale value being cracked.

Depends, if there were witnesses to the collision then that would be extremely stupid. If, say, it broke at home away from anyone's view I would most certainly spend the small amount of insurance to save a lot of money. Of course, I'd be stupid not to insure it in the first place but had the situation arose I wouldn't throw away my money because it's technically against the law (nobody would know), and I definitely have no sympathy for insurance companies.

Wow. I mean, just wow. I've never seen someone so proud to be dishonest. Karma's a b!tch man. I'd watch out if I were you.

Off course, because of people like you, you usually have to have the item being insured inspected first. On apple's website, to get an AC+, your supposed to take the device to an apple store and have it inspected by a genius. http://store.apple.com/us/product/S4689LL/A#overview

Lol proud? I was just being open with how I'd approach the situation. Also that's cool if you believe in karma, but my opinion isn't as straightforward as that. It's very subjective what's right and wrong, and to me losing thousands to an insurance company isn't particularly morally right. A lot of people just base their morals on what's legal, when it's really not that clear cut.

Anyhow, you talk about 'people like me' but I would not be stupid not to insure a 15k vehicle in the first place. It's not like I seek to rip companies off.

Seriously? What you would commit is called fraud. Not sure how that isn't "clear cut"? Just because nobody knows doesn't excuse it and that cost, by the way, is factored into the cost and passed back on to others. If you are dumb enough to have an expensive product without insurance, then YOU pay when you break it, not pass your mistake on to others.

Your morals are very questionable.

It's your fault! Another silly "I dropped it and I want a free replacement" post. Suck it up and take it like a man. Buy a real case like a otterbox or griffin survivor.
If you crash your car do you expect the dealer to fix it for free? That's what insurance is for.

To be fair, I don't think he's expecting Apple to do it--just wondering if they would give him a break, or what the chances are.

I think the chances are low now that they have Apple Care +

And this makes it right? If a company is caught doing something like this there are huge repercussions. My company DOES NOT do this...

Nice try at trying to justify your low morals though.

That is called insurance fraud and its a felony regardless of if the insurance claim is $500 or $50000. Don't tell people to commit a crime because they might unknowingly follow through with it.

You wouldn't buy a $15000 ski boat and then not insure it because you will drive safe and then after you wreck it try to buy insurance really quickly to get it covered would you?

If it works, it works. **** do u feel bad for holding your idevice that was made by an 11-y.o. Prob not, everyone got this(morality) mentality so stop b'tchin. It's op choice really and if he goes through with it is his own repercussion also, just as me. As for the jet ski analogy, I always buy insurance for mobiles, when I do use it or plan on using it, if not it'll just sit in the garage, there's never a time a person should drive any mobile and it's not insured. But also if there's anything reckless that's happens to me, I have a little thing called LIFE insurance. Thanks for trying though!

It is still insurance fraud even if no one else saw it. If you rob a bank and no one sees that doesn't mean you didnt commit a crime. It just means no one saw you in the act.

Morally, it is not the right thing to do and everyone on this board should know that. The only right thing to do is go to an Apple store and explain the situation and hope they give you a break.

Who says its insurance fraud.

BTW to all....

$299 gets you a replacement from Apple. But I would still try to pick up the warranty.

Obviously we'll never really know what the OP did as he wont risk coming here and being flogged.

Why would you even think that Apple would replace for free the iPad that was DROPPED DUE TO CUSTOMER CARELESSNESS? Yes, you're going to have to pay for a replacement, whether it's full price or a partial price. Live with it. Apple owes you nothing. Maybe you and your family members will be more careful with the device in the future.

Because they replaced mine.

Wrong, unless Apple specifically asks and you respond with a lie if it was previously damaged or not, it's not fraud. Apple is taking a risk that they have already calculated the cost of knowing that some people will buy it after the fact.

In my case, Apple replaced my 3 week old "New" iPad that I had purchased at Best Buy. It had a dent in the case that locked the volume key down. They did an in store "no receipt" exchange. Then they offered me Apple Care which I started to turn down...but in light of the recent incident (I have NO idea how it got dented, but suspect my co-workers did it while I was away from my desk) I decided to take them up on the offer in case of another "accident" that was beyond my control.

Actually (as taken from your link) you may be wrong:

  • You must buy AppleCare+ within 30 days of your iPad purchase.
  • There are three ways to buy:
    • 1) From the Apple Online Store: When you order the new iPad or iPad 2, you’ll have the option to add AppleCare+ to your cart before you check out.
    • 2) At an Apple Retail Store (if AppleCare+ is purchased separately from iPad, a Genius Bar Appointment, inspection of the iPad, and proof of purchase are required).
    • 3) By calling 1-800-275-2273 (requires proof of purchase).
Option #2 states it requires a Genius Bar appointment AND POP but option #3 does not seem to, it seems to only require POP.

Steal from the government, steal from Apple, steal from the company you work for, steal from your Grandmother, steal from your kids.....what's the difference? Where do you draw the line?

The government is crooked anyway, Apple's got plenty of money, Grandma is going to die before she spends her money.......and she didn't really ask me for the change back from doing her shopping so it's not stealing or fraud, right? Come on folks, this thread is bordering on ridiculous. Hope you are raising your kids right so they steal from you.

Apple has been known to do some rather extraordinary things in the area of customer relations. It doesn't hurt to ask so I say take it in, tell the truth, and see if they'll give you a break. If not, be prepared to pay for "your" mistake.

Thats why I got AppleCare+. I know you don't want to hear that but life isn't fair. Just call your local apple store to get a real answer.

Option 3. I bought my iPad from Target a couple days after launch. A week later I phoned Apple and bought Applecare+. No Apple retail store near me. No questions, no requirement to have it inspected. They knew when and where I bought it via the serial number. I have a certificate of coverage...all is well except for my broken iPad screen. :)

This is why I got a case almost right away.
With a smart cover its not a matter of IF just a matter of WHEN you drop it.

Some serious dick heads in this thread here. OP is a first time iPad opener and simply asked whether or not apple would just replace it outright. Like others have said it's not unheard of for apple to just swap it, that's why their customer service is second to none.

Go troll elsewhere...

Can those who are so offended by the fact that Apple would bear some cost to replace it specify whether they own Apple stock or not?

I got my AppleCare for less on eBay.

$500 I can lose.
$175k for my car, I can't lose.

I asked a question, and was curious. I respect people's responses and appreciate their time they give to me.

However, I don't need someone telling me I "payed for a life lesson"

----------

Thanks for the responses guys!

LOL

I'm assuming you are saying you own a Ferrari F430 and a 2009 Nissan GTR.

If I had both of those cars I would just reorder another iPad right away after breaking this one. Actually if I broke my iPad I would just re-order another one without having to worry about begging Apple for a replacement like a douche. So either:

1) You're cheap
2) You are lying about your cars
3) Both

But for certain you are pretty dorky for trying to make yourself sound special and bragging about some figures for an expensive car.

----------

Out of my curiosity I searched for some posts you made. Here's one on May 11th

Can i change the date on an ipad?
While i'm awaiting my new ipad, i'm using a friends ipad2 with a staples check-in app. On the 14th day of checking in, there is a coupon for 50$ off a computer, which i'd really like to use today. I'm thinking i can keep changing the date, till i get 14 days ahead and reveal the coupon.
Any thoughts!?
Thanks!!

LOL $50 coupon.

Yeah man, driving your Ferrari F430 with the GTR parked in the garage and spending them $50 coupons.

To add on Apple Care you need to bring the iPad to a Apple store first so they can inspect it to make sure it's in good condition.

No you just call Apple and give them the serial number. At least that's how I did it.

That's too funny! Good find. :D

Who mentioned price? However in that case you didn't get Applecare+ (PLUS) with accidental damage coverage you just got the "plain" Applecare 2yr warranty. If you did get the "plus", please post the link to the closed item you purchased as I would also consider it "for less."

You covered all my lines of reasoning.

Seriously, you are getting way to wrapped up in this.

I got my AppleCare for less on eBay.

But you did not get Applecare + there, and....unless you got it from an authorized dealer...you may find Apple denying you service when you need it.

The difference is obvious - who you're stealing from. I don't know about you, but I'd sooner steal from a several hundred billion company than my family. I don't see how they compare. But then again I value my family over Apple! :)

A moral thief, how refreshing....

Apart from I'm not a thief lol. If you were forced to steal from someone, you'd hold say, Apple, and your family in the same regard? I would hope not.

Not even sure how this thread turned so much :D I guess everyone got bored of OPs arrogance and 175k car (lol).
