I do think Apple are planning to make the iPad Pro a pro device even more so with software updates i don't see a problem with the hardware. The next iPad's that are revealed will be interesting, i hope they keep the 12.9" as well as adding the 10.5" iPad Pro it will give a choice, the bezel less idea has already got me pondering. As for the iPad only being for entertainment and consumption i don't believe that's true anymore, creation is also possible

I think this sums it up a little https://televisionmagnets.wordpress.com/2017/03/10/ipad-pro-as-a-laptop-replacement/

People have always been able to do work on the iPad. It really boils down to how much effort you are willing to invest in making it work (no different from any other device or platform).

You are right, there is no reason for both a 9.7" and 10.5" Pro to exist, that's why I don't believe there will be a 10.5" iPad at all.

Didn't Apple talk about how the 12.9" iPad Pro screen was the same as two 9.7" iPad Air 2 next to each other? Wouldn't going to a new 10.5" screen mess that up?

Uh, no. It doesn't change anything about the 12.9" Pro, or the fact that a 9.7" will still exist.

Going from a 9.7" to a 10.5" screen and reducing bezels is going to do nothing but raise Apples cost, for a barely noticeable difference in screen real estate, as well as adding a new resolution for developers to deal with. It would make a lot more sense to keep the screen size the same and reduce the bezels to make the physical size of the iPad smaller. That would at least get them a reduction in weight and most likely cost as they would be using less material and have to do less machining to make the case. Apple could not care less if that means aftermarket case companies have to retool to make new cases.

Except this is exactly what Apple is planning to do with the next gen iPhone and they have great desire and great need to evolve their most popular entry in the iPad lineup at this time. It is without argument that Apple needs a major technology bump in the iPad department to reinvigorate interest. A larger, nearly edge to edge display, possibly with a Touch Bar section replacing the physical Home Button, all inside the known footprint of the most successful iPad...is a huge head turner for the product.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think we will see three new 2017 iPad Pro in 12.9", 9.7" and 7.9" sizes(that's why I'm surprised there is 4 seen here and not 3 or 6). Tru-tone screen, Apple Pencil support, 4 speakers, and USB 3 speeds on all of them.

Nope. The lineup soon will be:

12.9" Pro
10.5" Pro
9.7" Air 3
7.9" Mini 4

I have to agree - I think this is what's happening as well. Pro as a designation for iPads with screen larger screen real estate (in pixels - 2732x2048, for better multitasking), and some form of the existing 9.7 and 7.9 sticking around, getting updated or something.

Apple hasn't only been about macs, since Steve announced they would change the name Apple Computer to Apple Inc. Get used to it.. Most computer companies are not dedicated to computers only anymore.

I guess they also will announce new macs at the next iPad event.

Most computer companies release more than two or three models a year and don't sit on their desktops for over a year. Apple is an iOS company.

I think a few are forgetting Apple has already built technology into all iPads that reject unwanted input on the sides of the screen for a few years now. So its not an issue and hasn't been for a while.
Well sure but whats the point of the edge to edge display of I can't tap things around the edges? How will it be able to tell if I am touching something incidentally?

Very easily, that's what the rejection algorithm is made to do, and why it feels like magic when it it works flawlessly.

What difference does it make. Surface is killing it. Who wants an iPad?;)

Visited the new Jax Apple Store (moved to a bigger space). Very busy as usual and plenty of folks at the iPad tables. I myself was looking at a Mini for my granddaughter. A block away, the Microsoft store, the place was empty.

I will wait for the new devices before buying. Depending on the feature set, I may give my granddaughter my iPad Air, which is still working great and buy a new device for myself.

So much for daddy's lil girl right? lol.

I actually think Surface Pro 4 is killing it in the tablet-as-computer-replacement arena, not the far more numerous media consumption arena which the iPad is obviously the best tablet to do such activities. Apple is trying to pitch the iPad Pro as a computer replacement, which I think the Surface Pro 4 does far better job of doing if you do something other than write documents all day.

It may be called MacRumors, but it's barely about Macs anymore. Why? Apple barely cares about the Mac. Get used to that.
As you have pointed out, Apple barely cares about Mac. But if people stop complaining, they would not hear our voices.
So, we live in a society where different opinions exist. Get used to that.

You live in a world where Apple checks MacRumors apparently.

The surface pro is likely still used as a laptop by the people who buy them, and less so as a tablet. I think this is very different from the people who buy an iPad specifically because they want a true tablet experience for getting things done.

totally agree. There's really no point for it to exist any more, especially at its current price.

While I do understand the argument, I can think of a few reasons quite easily:

-primary device for kids
-excellent size for an ebook reader
-iPad size preferred by someone who uses an iPhone SE or 4.7"

Apple only released 1-3 models of each model a year before it "became an iOS company" - and usually their computers run for like 5 years, before you need to upgrade

What year has Apple only updated two laptop models and said "screw you desktop users"?

I think your suggestions might be based on stereotypes.
iPad mini MUST remain.
I suggest that:
people who prefer mini 2,3,4, with a display that has a sharper and higher ppi (pixels per inch) than the other larger iPads with lower ppi.
people who like lighter weight iPads.
people who like compact devices.

iPad reduces my productivity. Everything takes twice as long on iPad than on mac. iOS is designed for consumption and casino slots like tapping actions. The marketing effort can't hide that fact.

I agree. I was explaining quick reasons as to why the mini should remain.
