The bump allows 3rd party lenses and accessories to perfectly line up with the camera. It has worked fantastic with my Moment lenses.
I would have thought they could just add a recess around the lens, and it would function as a hook just as well without having to physically stick out.

Can't imagine there ever being a justifiable reason to have a protruding camera on the back of an iPad.

Like the current one now is recessed.....

I personally like the design of this, especially the more square aesthetic. Looking forward to the announcement.
For me the iPad 10" will get upgraded but probably not my iPhone X [unless it has pencil support].

Dont care about the headphone jack loss either - haven't used wired headphones for several years now.

This upcoming iPad Pro update has the potential to be a gorgeous looking device, especially with a near all front screen.

Really curious about these flat edges though. The original did have flat edges, and it almost has an iPhone 4/5 look to it.

Could anyone name for me a specific design cue that this takes from the iPhone X?

I mean, it's not the side profile, it's not the notch or a bezel-free design, so...what?

A display with rounded screen corners that follows the shape of the device itself.

It's the iPhone 5 of iPads!

The squared-off edges may make it easier to hold onto, if the screen comes up closer to the edges of the device.

And, if the spot on the back/bottom is for the Smart Connector... there isn't any reason why they couldn't have another Smart Connector on either the left or right edge, so one can use the device with a keyboard (that uses said connector) in either a portrait or landscape configuration.

Want to have this style in:
7" OLED
4:3 form factor
3D Touch
120hz
True tone
without Notch
under Display finger print sensor
Pencil support
Dual Camera
1TB
IP68 waterproof
Phone App
otherwise running iPad versions of iOS Apps

... as an iPhone+/iPad mini replacement

"Elsewhere, a closer look reveals a distinct lack of headphone jack,"

A device people use on planes?
Some of us are Android handset, Apple tablet people. I have _zero_ interest in bluetooth headphones.
The home button is annoying, I don't like losing it, but I could deal.

The lack of a headphone jack? I'm out, looks like my iPad Pro 10.5 is the last iPad I'll own

Enough of this stupidity.

This is the second or third time today that i read that September 12 will reveal iPads. What happened to the rumored October event? Also, iPhones and iPads are hardly ever presented at the same time to not take the focus away from either...

If it happens, I'm loving the missing home button design. Not a fan of sharp edges, though...will not be comfortable to hold (never was on my iPhone 5S I had for 5 or so years, never got used to it)

as such a workhorse, I think it's silly (and unnecessary...?) to put so much emphasis on slimming it down and removing things like the earphone jack on something that's meant to be used for real work, as opposed to a phone which is all about portability and convenience.
Wait till you hear what they’ve done with the MacBook Pro!

I can’t decide which decision would be worse... portrait only FaceID or the smart connector being on the bottom.

I love my ASK how it is now. I couldn’t imagine using a keyboard in portrait mode.. The keyboard would either be tiny or have some weird fold out thing
They must have a new Smart Keyboard design where the back support travels further up the back of the iPad and connects to the Smart Connector there, on its side. No way Apple expects people to type in portrait mode only.

If no button on an iPad becomes to be, I don't care what Apple thinks or fans here say, sliding up for home is not as easy or quick or definite as a home button.

Regardless that this article is conjecture....I'm so curious to see what Tim lets Jony remove this year...

The more lenses you have the higher it will be. You could keep it flush but would allow poorer images. Having said that, I would happy with it being flush or even no rear camera.

Have to remember this is someone's idea of what they think it could look like (emphasising with a huge emphasis, 'could'), so I don't even give these any care other than words to read.

Likely because the amount of people using wired headphones with an iPad is a super small minority.

Is it? That's an assumption.

Please don't let there be a notch on the new iPads, please don't let there be a notch on the new iPads, please don't let there be a notch on the new iPads, please don't let there be a notch on the new iPads, please don't let there be a notch on the new iPads...
