Wait till you hear what they’ve done with the MacBook Pro!

They must have a new Smart Keyboard design where the back support travels further up the back of the iPad and connects to the Smart Connector there, on its side. No way Apple expects people to type in portrait mode only.
Why in the world would they create a design like that? What incentive would there be to put the smart connector on the bottom unless you intended it to be used that way?

Have to remember this is someone's idea of what they think it could look like (emphasising with a huge emphasis, 'could'), so I don't even give these any care other than words to read.

Is it? That's an assumption.

True that! I'm 6 ft.

The lack of a bezel annoys me in an iPad where it doesn't so much on a phone - because I actually have to hold the ipad. I am not one of those people who can tolerate my hand covering the screen. That's not how it should work. I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally turned on the flashlight on my iPhone X, and that's even after I turned off the Raise To Wake feature.

As long as Face ID works in any mode (including upside-down) I'm ok with it. It had better be "magical". The problem with this kind of styling is that it gets harder to really know which way is Up - and it shouldn't matter.

Other than that, this is just iteration on an existing design.

If this has a notch, though, they're going to annoy a lot more videophiles than they ever did on the iPhone X. I'd only agree to a notch screen if the screen were OLED and you weren't penalized for shrinking the movie to make sure 100% of it is viewed, while at the same time not backlighting unused pixels.

Can't imagine there ever being a justifiable reason to have a protruding camera on the back of an iPad.

As Tim lets Jony keep adding thinness to the iPad, we may be wishing there was a protruding camera from the front. When my iPad Air 2 finds itself lying face down on the table or my wood floor, the only way to pick it up is by sliding a piece of paper underneath it. #geniusdesignerjony #thinnessonetrickpony

I must be the only one who likes the design. Looking sleek!

Where is the front camera though?

So is this the "leak" we have all been waiting for? Does this make it more likely the ipad pro will be shown on the 12th

This will be a huge disappointment if they can't get FaceID to work in landscape as well as portrait on the new iPad (as it appears like these renders showing a relocated smart connector to promote a primarily portrait orientation).

Having an iPad work in any orientation, even upside down, is a severely understated feature. Portrait-only FaceID on an iPad should be a no-go.

Agreed. I always hated the portrait oriented keyboard from the original iPad. And with iOS 11 the iPad is primarily a landscape device.

Could anyone name for me a specific design cue that this takes from the iPhone X?

I mean, it's not the side profile, it's not the notch or a bezel-free design, so...what?

No home button maybe? But yeah, I get your point.

Likely because the amount of people using wired headphones with an iPad is a super small minority.
Wrong. You’re definitely living in a bubble (along with the Apple folks). To be fair, it’s a pretty big bubble, BUT “small minority” my ass. It’s not and they’re substantial chunk of Apple’s most important/influencial users

No. Just buy a Lighting to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter!
How do I charge my iPad while mixing audio?

This is the second or third time today that i read that September 12 will reveal iPads. What happened to the rumored October event? Also, iPhones and iPads are hardly ever presented at the same time to not take the focus away from either...

If they do them together, I am guessing it is for synergy in terms of both the new iPhones and iPad Pros having FaceID and "edge tp edge" displays.

That would leave October for the new Mac Mini, the MacBook Air replacement and maybe a sneak peak at the new Mac Pro.

Serial mobile leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer shared high-resolution renders today, courtesy of tech blog MySmartPrice, that are based on supposed leaked CAD images of Apple's upcoming redesigned iPad Pro.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said Apple is working on two new iPad Pro models that take design cues from the iPhone X, measuring in at 11 and 12.9-inches.

In addition to the thinner bezels, no Home button, and edge-to-edge display of the expected iPad Pro design, the mocked-up renders depict a device with an angular chassis boasting iPhone 4-style chamfered edges, rather than the rounded chassis of the current-generation tablet.

In another seeming nod to Apple's evolving iPhone handset design, the device is shown with separate antenna strips along the top and bottom edges of the chassis, instead of the single continuous antenna lines on either side of the existing cellular models.

Elsewhere, a closer look reveals a distinct lack of headphone jack, two rows of speaker vents on either side of the Lightning port - similar to the alleged CAD images leaked last month - and two microphone ports located above the TrueDepth camera embedded in the bezel.

Also like the CAD image before it, a Smart Connector is positioned on the back of the device directly above the Lightning port, instead of the landscape orientation on current iPad Pro models.

MySmartPrice claims the positioning is related to the limitations of Face ID in landscape orientation, however well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has said horizontal Face ID support is a feature in the upcoming iPad Pro models, which are expected to be announced this month.

The legitimacy of the additional details in the renders - and the alleged leaked CAD images they are supposedly based on - have yet to be confirmed, but Apple's scheduled media event on September 12 should reveal all.

That kinda does make sense. Also, considering it's an "S" year for iPhones (I mean, c'mon, we might get more edge-to-edge models for the iPhones and larger sizes, but nothing fundamentally different form the X as far as I'm aware from the rumor mill), they >might< shift the focus onto iPads for the September event this year. Either way, I still can't quite wrap my head around the logo/motto of the invitation and how it might fit into all of this...

Also, that means they REALLY need major updates and possible redesigns for the Mac lineup (I haven't seen much in the rumors besides the new Macbook Air and the Mini) in order to fill an entire event just with Macs...

Thank God. I can't take the current 2012 design anymore. A complete overhaul and ditching the iPhone 5 look with the chamfered edge is so needed. The design has been basically the same since the iPad Air in 2013.

I'd like to see the phones go back to flat sides too now that we are going into year 5 of the same curved sides on that...was really hoping they wouldn't recycle the iPhone 6 sides on the new X generation (looked great on 6-8 but kind of lazy to carry over to X), but they did so it'll be a long while longer with those I guess.

I think there is a good chance Face ID on the new iPad Pro will work in either portrait or landscape orientation. With good reason: unlike the iPhone X, the more space available on the iPad Pro makes it possible to use a 3-D facial recognition system that works in either orientation.
