Never seen so many issues at a launch. Come on Apple. Get a grip of quality control again.

So in the interest of figuring out whether this quality control is normal, I had a good look at the iPad 3 that arrived from Apple on Friday. A nice stuck pixel bang smack in the middle of the screen. Not a big deal, but still...

So, took it to the Apple Store, and exchanged it. First unit we didn't even turn on, since it had a quarter-inch scratch down the back of the casing. Genius was apologetic, and grabbed me another. Second unit had some "debris" of some sort under the screen. Genius was once again apologetic. Third unit had a stuck pixel right in the middle of the display. You'd be amazed how easy it is to see a stuck pixel on such a pixel-dense screen! Genius, once again, apologized. Fourth unit had aluminum scraped off the edge of the iPad where the black rubber gasket meets the black part of the screen glass. I didn't even get a chance to notice this, since the Genius pointed it out to me when he removed it from the box!

At this point, I was a bit frustrated, but went for one more. This last one had a stuck pixel in the bottom right corner (at least it was out of the way, right?), so I took it and left. Definitely, at this point, disappointed in the quality control.

I get home this evening, and get a chance to really use the thing, and notice quite easily that the left of the screen is, for lack of a better word, piss yellow, and the right is quite considerably bluer. I can say for a fact the first iPad 3 we had here had a pretty consistently uniform screen, so this is a real downer.

I'm not drawing any conclusions from this, but I did go through 5 units, plus my own unit that arrived Friday. I'm certainly not impressed...

So here's 'my iPad is not perfect' story (haven't heard anyone else report this):

When I tilt the iPad forward until it is almost horizontal, there is a thin sliver of bright light shining through at the bezel (right below the iSight camera). This is not backlight bleed (although my iPad does also have some minor bleed).

Of course I would never use the iPad from this angle, so who cares right? My OCD personality cares somewhat. Just wondering if anyone else has the same problem with their new iPad?

I got 1st with a dent on the back next to apple logo and with gps problem , 2nd with 3 bad pixels, 3d with dent/chipon the edge, Im tired to go back and f. Going to keep it. Bad luck :-(. Any way I have 14 days now to see if my "paranoia" can live with it. All 3 are verizon. I have also att with no problem.

Wirelessly posted

I'm on to my 6th IPad and I'm yet to find a 100% perfect screen

1st. Dead pixel
2nd. Dead pixel
3rd. Partical under glass
4th. Mark on glass
5th. Mark on glass
6th. Check it, fine, thought this was the one, got home, dead pixel :(
7th. Will update today after genius appt.

I've gone through 11 white 64GB Verizon models since launch. Every single one had this problem:

two of the 11 were just like what's pictured. The other nine were even worse and had at least one dead or stuck pixel, chips in the metal around the screen AS WELL as what's pictured above.

Went back to the Apple store today and tried a white 64GB AT&T model. The very first one I got had the issue pictured above. The second one (and the one which I took home) does not have that issue, BUT it has a dead pixel near the center AND a stuck green pixel just off to the left and down a little from the center.

I don't like being Apple's quality control. Debating now on whether I should just live with the dead and stuck pixels or just return for refund and wait a few months.

When workers are doing 12 hours shifts and getting paid $1 an hour not least the mundane and repetitive assembling you'd expect some blemishes in the process.

This is unacceptable.

The only problems in mine are v slight backlight bleed on the right side (assuming holding vertical) and a tiny speck of dust about 1-1.5mm into the screen from the home button. Took me two weeks to notice it, spotted when applying a new screen protector, and apart from knowing its there it isn't noticeable in normal use of the iPad.

Every Apple store in my city has been out of stock now of the 64GB white Verizon model for at least a week. They have every other model though.

Maybe there was a bad batch of the 64GB white Verizon model and Apple is fixing them?

I pre ordered a 16gb wifi only black one and it came with a tool mark on that rim around the bezel. I thought it was a plastic rim but apple claims it is glass. Not sure how you put a dent in glass, wouldnt it just shatter? Whatever. They sent me two more which were even worse. The latest one had rough edges on the metal back, near the home button, as well as tool marks on the bezel. So three in a row with tool marks and rough spots. It seems to me that Apple assembled a bunch of these in the factory, then realized they had forgotten to do something and had to crack them open and fix the problem. To me, that instantly makes it a refurb. After reading all your problems with pixels and light leak, I think I will just stick with the first one they sent me as its only one very tiny tool mark, but I know its there, I can feel it, and I can see if I go looking for it. Really annoying but from my experience all these new iPads have at least one imperfection. Apple QC is terrible. I'm no fanboy and dont own lots of their products but this iPad will probably be the last. If Battlepath didnt exist I would just return this one and live life happily iPadless.

If the failure rate were as low as you claim then why are the same people getting upwards of 11 faulty units in a row? Their store just happened to get all of the bad batch? I dont buy it.

Hey guys.. just thought I would chime in.

Apple has great customer support.

When you ship 3 million (estimating here..) of an item.. there is going to be a TON of defective units.

Even at a .1% failure rate (which.. btw.. is absolutely unheard of) your looking at 3,000 faulty units.

It's fine, and it happens. No company in the world can avoid things like dust under the screen and slight flaws in the aluminum. It's inherent with the technology available today.

The GOOD news?? Apple will take care of you if your polite and persistent.

My iPad 2 I had replaced 3 times. I never ONCE had any issue, and apple issued me a 100$ gift card for my troubles (what troubles? Walked in and replaced 3 times.. had a new ipad in minutes).

Instead of freaking out.. USE your iPad. When you get a chance, stroll into apple and I can almost promise if your not a rude prick they'll get you a new iPad and you'll be on your way. Hell, I had geniuses letting me OPEN iPads and see if they were up to my standard, if they weren't they would go get me a new one.

Know why? Cause I was always polite and never ever rude. The staff didn't put dust under your screen, and it's not their fault. Be polite and they'll be cool with you.

Long rant.. lol

Yep, agreed. The conditions under which these people are producing iPads are appalling, and their suffering is all to keep prices down for us/ for Apple to increase profits.

Oh man I feel bad for some people...this is my first iPad ever and it's working gret

Not sure why you were down voted. I have no problems with my iPad either. But I do feel for those who did/do have problems. I know what a hassle it is dealing with product returns.

just bought an iPad 3 today:

1) chip in aluminum shell corner
2) light bleed
3) pink tint blankets screen from any slight deviation from 0-degree viewing angle
4) the iPad stutters and skips while playing games such as Metal Storm

i thought by now, 6 months later, they would have fixed the issues. this is absolutely horrendous for a $729 device

That is just ridiculous. You should be banned from the Apple store.
Why should he be banned? Ban him because he wants what he paid for to perform as described? I don't get why some people feel like it's okay to pay for something that does not live up to the expectations that the selling company has set for the product. I know that this response was written several months ago, but I had to get my two cents in on this.

People should get used to screen uniformity issues. It's a problem that more or less affects most of the units. Reason being? It's very simple - screen itself is perfect free of uniformity issues, but during assembly process they fuse it to the glass using force, which makes the LED backlight twist a little bit resulting in uniformity issues. Then the whole display panel (screen + glass) are attached to aluminium body which casues another preassure resulting in even more backlight/discoloration issues.

You can easily test it at home. Put a black wallpaper, turn the brightness to max then go to completaly dark room and touch very hard along the glass where the screen ends. You'll see uniformity changes for a moment, becasue you caused a different preassure. Sometimes it helps to cure uniformity issues, sometimes it changes it, other times it can even make things worse.

To sum things up - as long as they will not change the way screens are fused and then attached to device, don't expect any improvements in uniformity. Those issues are bound to happen in most of the units, becasue of the way iDevices are being made. Only thing you can do is to swap at Apple Store till you get the most accurate uniformity. But there's not a single iPad on the market that's 100% uniform perfect. There are only extremely bad, bad, and moderately affected units.

I think your confused; You must be thinking about American "working poor" making these kind of wages.....the Chinese are starting to do just fine, relative to some of our workers. And, they have jobs.
