I've gone through 3 iPads, all of them have had 1 dead pixel . This is especially annoying when people i know have gotten them and don't have any (and trust me, I've looked over them) The people at the apple store have been very nice about it, and completely understand how annoying it is to have a defect on a $1000 device, but they think it could be a bad batch of them or something like that, they said to go to the other store next week to try to get one out of a different batch. I guess I just have been really unlucky, but hopefully I will end up with one that doesn't have any bad pixels :).

I've been an Apple fan for years, but quality control is slipping tremendously. As much as they tout their rising sales figures, we pay for that success with less attention to detail before the product ships. I got a first gen iPad the day before announcement day for the new iPad for dirt cheap (I mean really cheap), in perfect condition and considered selling it and buying the 3rd gen. I can honestly say (call me OCD, a perfectionist, or picky, that's fine) that besides feeling that this iPad suits my needs sufficiently, I would not consider playing return roulette. Apple has succeeded in making someone thinking of upgrading for the hell of it, and who was originally drawn to them for their perfectionism, stick with a 2 year old product simply because of crap quality control. Good job.

any updates from those who had genius appointments?

Had mine today for an exchange (chip/tool mark in the aluminum). Very smooth process, no feet dragging--the employees were actually pretty sympathetic. About a 15 minute process overall.

Unfortunately, I didn't look it over much in the store (came out of a sealed package), the replacement has a cluster of dead pixels and a smudge mark inside the glass. I'll try Apple's customer service number this time and see if another exchange may be possible.

The tech support guy I spoke to before being transferred to after sales told me that my display problem (dust speck), was very unusual for a 3rd gen device.

And, if it is not, simply return for a full refund and rebuy if you desire to tempt your luck again. Don't settile for crap, whatever you do.

At least you are smart enough to know better. Just like when I returned my iPad 2 for light bleeding and they insisted they had no idea what I was talking about... like, literallly, didn't even know what bleeding was.

Has anyone taken their device to the Apple Store to see what they say about the iPad running warmer on the left hand side, if so, what did they say?

I got 1st with a dent on the back next to apple logo and with gps problem , 2nd with 3 bad pixels, 3d with dent/chipon the edge, Im tired to go back and f. Going to keep it. Bad luck :-(. Any way I have 14 days now to see if my "paranoia" can live with it. All 3 are verizon. I have also att with no problem.

Thanks, used this to arrange a replacement. Glad I did as the call took about 35 minutes in total. If have received order confirmation of the replacement which the advisor assured me would be a priority fulfilment. My current iPad will be collected in a day or two. Fingers crossed I get a good 'un.

Fingers crossed, Let us know!

Oh man I feel bad for some people...this is my first iPad ever and it's working gret

Just an update. I realized my second iPad had some backlight bleed so I went to an Apple store to exchange it. The first one the guy brought out had scratches in every corner plus a few chips around the bezel. The second (last black 64gb wifi) they had in stock had a really small scratch on one of the corners along with a really small imperfection along the rubber that runs between the screen. It's not nearly as deep as the previous one and isn't deep enough to reflect light. The screen on this one also seems better. I've now opened up 4 new iPads and have yet to find one with zero damage to the aluminum case...

I also just picked up a new iPad. Zero dead pixels no dust under screen. I have owned the original iPad and iPad 2; both of which had dead pixels. So surprised I don't have to return this one!

I have noticed when cleaning my iPad screen that there is a tiny white spec right in the middle. I thought it was some dust that was sticking but after trying to clean it off I realized its not on the surface it's under the glass. Curious if this is the pixel out scenario mentioned above, it's a really tiny spec?? I made a "genius bar" appointment for today, curious what they will say, probably laugh at me. It's not to noticeable when screen is back lit. But can be depending on viewing angle and lighting. Would uguys bring it back or deal with it considering got about $1000 into it with tax and Apple care (64GB 4G).

Thanks :)

Received my replacement iPad today and thankfully its a good 'un. :)

Very impressed with the service. I called on Monday, couriers contacted me on Tuesday, arranged collection for Thursday, and then a brand new iPad arrives Friday. All very painless.

So if you do have a problem, I highly recommend organising an exchange during the 14-day "no quibble" period rather than living with it.

That is just ridiculous. You should be banned from the Apple store.

Seriously, there's 3 million pixel on the screen. And you take it back because 1 pixel is dead. A pixel you will likely never see anyway besides it being under a microscope? I understand some issues on here, but taking it back for one dead pixel on a 3 million pixel panel is beyond me.

You are one of the reasons my AAPL-shares haven't reached $1,000 yet, lol :)

What may be described as one pixel is probably more.

Mine had a speck of dirt in the display which under normal viewing looked like a full stop which never moved. Every web page I visited had this "permanent full stop" which was most noticeable when you scroll a page and it defiently stays put.

A super macro photo revealed that this tiny speck was in fact covering approximately 11 pixels!

The big (only) selling point of the new iPad is the Retina display. So I would not accept a display which has any defects visible to the naked eye. Of course others may have lower standards for which Apple will gladly accept your money.

Got another one, this one has a peice of dust under the screen (looks like dead pixel) and a chip in the aluminum, unacceptable for a $1000 device (64GB 4G and AppleCare), going to try one more time this week.

I have 1 dead pixel that I can see, and also my entire screen turns yellow when I rotate it even slightly away from parallel with my face.

Pretty awful compared to my previous iPads. Making a genius bar appt. is week.

I had to take my first one back last night after the backlight on the left side started flickering and then after a hour stopped working. Unfortunately, I didn't find any problems with the screen but there is a speck of dust under the glass on this replacement one.
