Unless they're changing the release schedule of the ipad, I'm going to remain skeptical of this rumor until Tuesday.

Yep, I go with that. I cannot see two new iPads with radical changes being released in the space of 4 months.
If it is just a minor tweak being made then fine and we can still expect a new iPad in march next year.
But if they announce an all new iPad with lightening connector, faster processor, thinner screen etc then I think it will be safe to say that in future we will see new models released in the fall rather than spring

it's only an ipad mini...won't be much of an upgrade to what you have.

I would still expect another ipad in march/april.

Such a stupid thing to say. Surface is already sold out. Surface runs a real mobile OS. Something iOS aspires to be.

Well the Surface tablet you're referring to thats currently on pre-order only runs Windows RT which is an ARM based system, has limited enterprise features, can only run dedicated ARM applications available from its own app store. Don't get me wrong i think it looks great, but right now elevating it above IOS as a "Real Mobile OS" is to be quite frank vacuous.

The new iPad update will just be the conforming to the new lightning connector standard. If the update even happens at all.

If Apple were going to change their release schedule they wouldn't bring it forward, they'd push it back. Like the 4S.

i really hope this is a full update. the ipad2 and the new ipad were both crap updates and ive been rocking the original ipad untill now because of it. the new chip, siri from the start, lte for eu. everythin that the new ipad should have been.

You really think they would give a full update to something that is a mini?

I still can't see how it's wise to update the current iPad, seeing as it would compete with the iPad mini for the holidays. Why not let people buy iPad minis for Christmas and the iPad 4 3-4 months later.

Sure they wanna compete with the surface for Christmas but how much impact could it have? iPads brand is really strong.

If Apple ruins my plans to buy a fully updated and refreshed iPad 4 in march '13 I'll be so disappointed.

Edit: Plus releasing all iOS devices in the fall doesn't make sense. Too cramped schedule.

People use the word 'obsolete' far too frequently these days. I do not think it means what they think it means.

I agree with your logic I don't see them releasing both iPads at one time.

I had replaced my original iPad when the new iPad came out back in March. Picked up a white 32GB on launch day. Now I find out that Apple is already going to refresh the new iPad next week? Come on.... Is it me or is anyone else bothered by this. Granted, I love advancements in technology just as much as everyone else. But to have my iPad deemed to be obsolete in a mere 7 months is crazy. Next thing I'll probably find out that there are certain Apps that won't run on the New (now old) iPad. :(

I'm with you 100%. Same situation also, (64GB instead of 32GB though).
I'm not afraid my iPad will become obsolete as it probably won't, my main worry is that whenever I wanna sell it its resale value will be a lot less because of this new "revision" of the iPad therefore I'll have to spend much more on getting a new one.

7 months... pretty f-cked up.

Yes, plus I checked a couple of Apple Stores online and there seems to be no shortages of iPad 3's so I'd assume they'd wanna sell of inventory, as they've done with (almost) all other Apple products in the past, before they release a new iPad.

One thing could be to discontinue the iPad 2 to make room for the old new iPad (hah) and the newest new iPad.

Sorry, but I can't see this happening though. On the other hand, I'm no expert and I'm sure whatever Apple does they have a bunch of advisors and analysts locked up somewhere to predict every possible outcome and to maximize profit.

You can't swing a cat around on these forums without hitting numerous people begging for more frequent product updates. But now you can't swing it in the opposite direction without hitting others who want Apple to slow down their product updates. Many of the latter in this very thread who have repeatedly begged for more frequent updates for other Apple products.

I'm assuming iPad mini will have IGZO screen, lightning connector, A6 silicon, and will probably be thinner than previous iPad2. IMO this will make the 9,7" iPad look a bit outdated and would probably decrease (a bit) their sales on Christmas.

It's unlikely that it will be a total refresh, that will come in March or so as usual. This update will just bring the lightning connector to the iPad 3, and maybe one or two minor changes. I also think a die shrink will come about, but that isn't really an "update", they can just start shipping 32nm A5X's whenever they want.

I feel like we will see the new 7.85" iPad as well as the updated 9.7" iPad with A6, new connector, etc. at this event and will not see another update until February or March 2014.

The A6 is very much able to stay competitive for 16 months instead of 12. This update happens to be a few months earlier than normal because of the new connector as well as it conveniently being timed with the Surface release. Starting in 2014, both the 7.85" and 9.7" iPad will be updated at the same time yearly.

I might be wrong, but it makes sense to me :apple:

Yeah, I'm afraid of this too except I think it'll be June or sometime before September 2013, not 2014.

I agree except I think we will now see iPad upgrades yearly in October rather than March. It makes sense to refresh your products before the main present purchasing season

March never made too much sense to me as it can put people off buying them from Christmas if an update is only 3 months around the corner.

I agree with you that March is a rather weird release window and that pre-christmas would be better.

If, and that's a big if, we were to see an updated iPad on Tuesday it better be a huge update, as in iPad 4 (new processor, screen, connector, thinner, lighter etc.). If, on the other hand we don't see a new iPad they have to release it around March. There's no way they'd let it run 1 1/2 year without update.

Surface runs a real mobile OS. Something iOS aspires to be.

The iPad is already successful. Something the Surface aspires to be.

Apple doesn't care if anybody thinks iOS is a 'real' mobile OS or a 'fake' one, just whether it provides value to the end user. If an OS did everything I wanted, but it turned out CapnJackGig determined it wasn't a 'real mobile OS', take a guess at how much I would care, and how much anybody should care.

And here I am just chugging along with my iPad 2 which I still don't think is even outdated. It's all in your perception of things. Do you go out and buy a new MacBook every year? Most likely not. Just love your iPad, and when you feel like it's time to upgrade, go out and get another one :)
